new jewelry styles lo look for:
Heraldic motifs large,
chunky pins either jeweled . or
plain to wear on a cummerbund,
a blouse, a jacket or coat . . .
massive pendant necklaces, per
fect with your turtle-necked
blouse or dress bib necklaces,
in as many as a dozen strnds to
glamorize your plain top blouses
and dresses . . . big hoop ear
rings perfect with the new
slick-back hair styles . . . scat

rhinestones and colored stones,

UMBRELLA BATH
It's a good idea to give um
brellas a thorough shampoo
from time to time. The bathtub
is as good a place as any. Open
the umbrella and brush it to re
move dust or grit. Go over the
outside and inside with a soft
brush dipped in thick luke
warm soapsude. Give extra at
tention to creases. Next turn
the shower on to rinse it, or
pour clear water over it. Leave
it open to dry.
SNOW TIMERS
Snowsuits featured for the
nursery crowd, for the coming
cold weather season, have many
new style treatments. One comes
with a grown-up stole. Some
have jackets that can be revers
ed. Another, one-piece style, of
fers a jumper effect with em
broidery trim, while a snowsuit
for a very young child has
handy attached mitts and boots.
Many New Synthetic Fabrics Lend
Smart Comfort to Business Trips
"Travel light travel right'
might well be the motto of the
smart traveling business man.
And with the aid of new syn
thetic fabrics, the man -of today
can carry a week's wardrobe in
a small suitcase. No sending
home of laundry boxes, either,
for he'll be able to do his own
washing along the way.
The well-dressed man can
start his trip with suit and acces
sories, and even top coat, all
made of synthetic fibers. Some
fabrics are completely washable;
some are blended and will go,
though not very often, to the
cleaner. In either case, the syn
thetic wardrobe will require a
minimum of care.
All-weather suits of any of the
synthetics, either used alone, or
blended with wool or cotton,
will help keep him trim and
wrinkle-free throughout his trip.
The extra suit, rolled away in a
email space in his suitcase, will
hang out in a jiffy, and will re
sist spotting and soiling. Formal

clothes, too, lightweight and
comfortable, pack easily and
neatly with a minimum of bulk.
If the traveler hasn't a syn
thetic fabric raincoat along dur
ing a sudden shower, his syn
thetic suit, according to the
makers, "will not spot or shrink
if he is caught in the rain. Most
of these suits are said to dry
neatly and quickly.
Besides the synthetic raincoat,
which is light, a nylon umbrella
is another new protection
against the elements. This fab
ric, say the manufacturers, lends
itself particularly well to rain
wear, as it is water-resistant and
stands up under abrasive wear.
The laundry problem is solved
with the addition oLa neatly
tailored nylon, Dacron or orion
shirt. These wash in minutes,
and if hung on a wooden hanger
will drip dry back to shape in
just a few hours. No ironing re
quired, either, if they are hung
neatly, and the collar, cuffs and
button band smoothed with the
fingers.
. Synthetic yarn underwear
and hosiery require even less
care. For men who are partial to
wool socks, they can now be
purchased with nylon reinforce
ments at the heel and toe.
Neckties, too, are now avail
able, in synthetic fabrics, made
to resemble wool or silk. These
ties are claimed to resist wrink
ling, creasing and soiling; they
are washable.
BEAUTY ACCENT
The smaller the room, the
more important the accessories.
The unimpressive proportions
of a hall, for instance, can be
dramatized with a colorful scat
ter rug framed against the pol
ished floor, a handsome wall
clock and the fresh green ac
cents of leafy plants.
A SMART CASUAL ensemble
for Fall: all-wool tweed sports
jacket in three-button style, gray
flannel slacks, and all-wool
tweed cap.
VEIL CARE
To wash a soiled veil, shake it
in a small jar of warm soapsuds.
Rinse well by the same method
and blot in a towel. To restore a
crisp finish, press flat with a
warm iron between two layers
of waxed paper.

California Styles
Easy New Fashions
For Autumn Wear
From the Golden Stale, come
the fashions that hare . made
California the men's sportswear
and casual-clothes capital of the
world.
Wool retains its prominence
in clothing, including suits and
sports coats.
A new and trimmer line is fea
tured with a slightly narrower
lap.l, less exaggerated shoulder
and slimmer over-all effect.
Suit and sports coats retain
the athletic look developed here,
however, with its ful chest and
snug hip. Pocket flaps. and cen
ter vents are present . in force
for the first time since before
the war. Most suits are two or
three button single breasted
models with two button treat
ment leading. Most sports coats
come in novelty fabrics.
Rayon and wool and wool and
nylon-blend slacks continue to
offer a 1 1-w o o 1 competition,
thanks to price appeal and often
greater wearability.
Denim remains in the picture
this fall after a new high in popu
larity. As a refreshing switch,
dark blue denim jackets are
shown with "faded" blue knit
trim.
Sports shirts are in various
novelty sty lings of rayon, rayon
and wool, orlon and other syn
thetics. Surface interest is evi
dent in cord overplaids, irrides
cent, diagonal overcheck and
birdseye effects.
Jackets, of knit and rayon
fabric, include models with-knit
back, sleeves and collar and
rayon check front. Suede and
knit combination, and suede and
tweed jackets are also new.
This year, too, rayon has taken
hold strongly in clasic casual
jackets belted and waist length
jackets of rayon gabardine, ray
on checks and plaids, and a new
suede finish rayon.
Once again for Fall '52, Cali
fornia fashions typify that free
and easy feeling that embodies
comfort and smartness both.

cottons.

head snugly and have carefully
sized back openings that permit
the pony tail to peep out comfortably.

Newest fashions in rainwear
are designed to bring sunshine
to the heaviest downpour. Bright
colors, like vivid blue or coral
red, in exciting fabrics, such as
fine pinwale corduroy or irides
cent taffeta, all help to create
this cheery mood.
New rainwear silhouettes, in
many instances, feature jaunty
Moused backs, full, full skirts
and flattering collars that may
be dainty petal style or oversize
designs that can be worn in a
number of ways. Many of the
new raincoats also have match
ing hats and belts.
Short draperies can be used
to achieve a formal- aid with
the use of an elongated swag
of drapery to give importance
to window treatment.
Gloves Dress Up For Autumn Styles
Combining to make exciting
fashion news for gloves, on hand
for Fall, is a generous use of col
or and a lavish amount of flat
terying detailing on every type
of glove from the very gala
kidskins to the sports-minded
wool knit styles.
Colors run the gamut from the
new deeper fashion tones to such
compelling patterns as checks,
polka dots and stripes. There are
deep wines, lively blues, dark
greens .bright reds, yellow, a
complete range of beige tones
and dark greys.
Black, one of the most popu
lar tones for Fall, is often seen
seemed with other deep shades
such as grey, blue or brown.
