'American Silhouette'
.An easy, new feeling is enter
ing the Fall style picture for
men. It is called the "American
Silhouette" . and is tailored for
the many men who prefer an un
studied dress-up look, for both
business and leisure, rather than
a carelessly sloppy or starchy
formal appearance.
Suits, coats, hats,- shirts, even
shoes are being made available
with this new relaxed appear
ance. Take the basic fabrics and col
ors, for instance. Soft, textured
shetlands, tweeds and flannels
are all predicted to be numer
ous. Patterns, such as under
stated District checks. Glen
plaids, stripes, diagonals and
herringbones for sports apparel,
and soft finish diagonals, tweeds
and cheviots for town wear, are
also plentiful.
Color Mixtures
Stronger richer colors will all
be on hand to greet Fall with
new informality. Typical, of the
new color palette, are the many
mixtures , of colors used to
heighen the soft textures of fab
rics, and the solid tones of char
c o a 1 brown, neutral smoke
brown and many gradations of
grey.
In keeping with the "comfort"
trends, suits and overcoats are
designed to conform with body
lines. Single-breasted styles are
predominant, featuring narrow
er shoulders and a straighter
hanging silhouette.
Narrower Brims
Complementing the straight
hanging silhouettes, are the new
hats, smaller from every view
point, with their narrower brims
and tapered lower crowns. Ex
pected to be especially appealing
to younge men, are the Tyrolean
and Tyrolean-influenced hats,
often featured in debonair
Turtlenecks Appear
Again in Menswear
It's the revival of the turtle
neck sweater for men, this Fall.
And whether that turtleneck
Is to be worn for raking leaves
cr skiing, it is designed to offer
warmth, both in its snug wool
weave and wide choice of bright
colors and patterns in which it
is featured.
Typical of the new turtleneck
designs is a sweater with a pearl
grey top, navy sleeves and bot
tom and bright red stripe be
tween. Another example, in a
sweater with a trutleneck that
can be worn up or down, is all
white with red and navy stripes
around the neck and just above
the waist and wrists.
FOR FALL the modern man
chooses a textured all-wool
worsted topcott with fly front,
natural set-in sleeves and finely
tailored detailing throughout.

with rope band and feather trim.
Shirts for business, gain their
informal attitudes, by, in many
instances, incorporating style
characteristics of sports shirts.
Increasing emphasis is being
placed on the short round point
and bandless collars. Some of
the latter "are . widespread and
others are button-down types.
Colors, too, lend a new relaxed
air to dress shirts. Predicted to
be pastel favorites for Fall shirts
are greys, yellows, pinks and
blues.
Moccasins, and moccasin-type
shoes, for both leisure and busi
nes wear, as well as a preponder
ance of details, like lacings,
heavier soles and stiching, and
such tones as warm russets and
golden hues, all herald the in
coming of the "American Silhou
ette" in shoes, too.
NO PLACE FOR BABIES?

several weeks of apartment hunt
ing and encountering "adults
only" signs, a Turkish visitor
concluded, "Americans love
babies on the street.. They love
them in their cars. But they
don't seem to like them in the

For the man on the go, new
luggage designs offer him, more
than ever, the kind of conveni
ence and wear and tear features
he appreciates most for his busy
days away from home.
Handy, are the soft sided one,
two and three suiters that can be
had with companion bags. Some
of these have snap-in, water
proof toilet kits that are espe
cially desirable for holding
damp wash cloths , or shaving
and tooth brushes.
Newest brief bags are multi
gusseted and roomy enough to
hold a change of clothing as well
as the usual business papers. En
suring extra long wear are the
brief bags that have a "cording"
of plastic, in -the same color as

Jewelry Twinkles ;
With Fall Textures
Texture for texture, color for
color and line for line, .this is the
jewelry story for Fall.
The softened textures of fab
rics featured for the new season,
for example, can now be dressed
up with jewelry that also has a
textured appearance. Typical of
the textures are grooved beads
and filigreed and hammered
surfaces.
Providing a suitable accent
for the rich colors seen every
where in the Fall fashion pic
ture are the many blue, topaz,
bright sapphire and gold shades
available in jewelry.
Highlighting the color picture
is the return of black jewelry,
either alone or in combination
with colored beads, to offset the
many all black and touched with
black Fall costumes. Jet beads
and gleaming smooth beads will
be on hand, sometimes dramati
cally alone, often coupled with
tiny rhinestones, faceted gold
beads or rich looking baroque
pearls.

Teenage Footwear
To Be Neat, Soft
Fashion has a correlated cos
tume plan that will go from head
to toe, on a junior this fall. Her
general appearance will be neat
and feminine, and this applies to
her softly tailored suits and
coats, her close head hugging
hats and her lighter, softer shoes.
As every young girl knows,
each succeeding season has
brought forth more and more in
teresting shoe styles on lower
heels. Much has been said about
the Cuban, the Louis and the
Midway variations. This fall will
be no exception to the rule, for
the choice in lower heel heights
is unusually great in color, fab
ric and silhouette.
Newest is the hooded heel.
This heel is built on a wedge and
covered to look like one piece
with the back of the shoe.
Classic Loafers
For casual wear, the loafer
shoe of the year will be the
white, or dark toned bucks on
cushion crepe soles. Shoes will
be smartly accented with highly
polished cobras in high lustre
black, deep red or blue green
and these will go with the poodle
and lush pile fabrics for fall, ac
cording to the National Shoe In
stitute. Red as a bright contrast on
navy and black shoes, on wedge
heels, as tassel laces or smart
whip stitched accents is proof
that two tones are better than
one. Important are the two and
sometimes three tones added as
contrasting or harmonizing mud
guard trim.
In addition to the popular
grey and beige flannel pumps,
juniors will now also find new
novelty flannel flats or tweed
pumps with perhaps an appli
qued kid design on the vamp.
Gala Pumps
For derss up, black suede
strapped sandals or black satin
pumps are sparked with all-over
gold designs, gold kid heel and
mudguard. Draped failles are
dotted with flashing stones and
little colored velvet scoop shells
or touches of velvet on suede
will attend many a gala evening
event.
And for lounging, there will
be checked corduroy flats, amus
ing gingham and terry cloth
scuffs.

It's the convenience adding
features that count in leather
accessories presented for men,
this Fall.
In everything, from pocket
secretaries to glasses cases, there
are new handy innovations. New
men's pocket secretaries, for ex
ample, are designed so they can
double as a coat wallet and come
with removable memo pads and
pencil.
Many of the secretaries have
special markings on each pocket
indicating which is for stamps,
which for cards and which for
passes. Some feature a sliding
card file which all but disap
pears when the secretary is fold
ed. Others have a miniature in
dexed card file with sections
noted for each item to be car
ried. A new slim pass case idea is
said to work like a charm. It
has a gusseted section which
holds ten or more separate ace
tate folders for photos or identi
fication cards. As many or as
few, of these folders, as desired
can be used at one time. Re
placements are available when
the folders become discolored.
'Secret' Pockets
New for men's wallets are
easy to use "secret" pockets,
some of which permit separation
of paper money denominations.
Identification features are. seen
more and more in wallets, as
well as in keycases. Some have
a registered number which is
part of the wallet and others
have a detachable card which re-

Some feature hooks that can be

ried. Some have accordion pleat
ed acetate pass cases. And others
are designed to hold a few coins.
Some, like the wallets they
match, carry the manufacturer's
agreement to return the case.

Fur fashions this Fall show
much excitement in silhouette,
unusual trims and combinations
of contrasting furs.
A few of the high points to
look for in '52 fur fashions:
Many short coats either jack
ets or three - quarter lengths.
32'' to 36" will be most popular
lengths . . . Jackets will be boxy
and loose very adaptable to
almost any type of costume. Full
ness at the back there will be
many slim coats this year but
most of them will have some
type of controlled fullness . . .
Empire style will have slim
look, but fullness will flare out
just below the shouder blades
. . . Martingale style will look
straight but will have low belt
which holds in fullness but
which can be detached to let
coat hang loose. Some of the
most popular styles feature a
comparatively straight look in
front with all the fullness con
centrated in a back flare.
Unusual irims braid, velvet,
and wool are used as sharp new
accents on Fall furs . . . braid is
frequently used as trim on cuffs,
pockets, revers . . . velvet perks
up collars, cuffs, pocket flaps . .
black wool fringe is used as
edging for a black seal cape . .
buttons are more than just clos
ings shown as a new decora
tive touch on a pocket flap or
bordering a deep cuff . . .
Contrast fur irims differ
ent furs or different shades of
the same fur are used as a very
new looking accent ... grey
Persian lamb collar may be used
on a black rabbit coat . . dark
muskrat shawl collar and cuffs
on a pale muskrat jacket . ; .
pale muskrat or tuxedo panel
and deep cuffs on a brown rab
bit jacket . . . ranch mink ascot
for a dark persian paw coat.
Impressive pockets casual
jackets use pockets as a very
important part of the style ...
they are big, deep, and frequent
ly emphasized by button and
braid detailing.
Other points which identfy
'52 fur fashions are dramatic
sleeves some wide and deep
cuffed at the wrist, others nar
row and push-up . . . the middy
line so popular in dress and
separates fashions is also inter
preted in furs either by a
low back belt, fullness gathered
low in the back, or jackets
which blouse or taper at the
hipline wide sailor - type
collars and double breasted clos
ings also suggest the middy
look . . . the tulip line which
has been prominent in skirts
and dresses is interpreted with
a slim top line and fullness
that starts just above the knees
through pleats or gores.
All of these new styling ideas
combine to make this Fall's fur
fashions more exciting and more
varied than they have been In
