'PERFECT CONDITION Brent Bradberry, 13-year-old Lynwood,
Calif., Boy Scout lost for seven days in a Sierra forest wilderness
northwest of Yosemite Park, has his weight checkedin Sonora,
Calif., by Deputy Sheriff Don Hineman. Brent, found 19-miles from
where he became separated from a fishing party, had lost no
weight and his condition was described by doctors as "perfect."
Increased Checks
Due Some Welfare
Recipients Soon
There will bo increases in the
checks of some recipients of
Jackson County Public Welfare
commission assistance in Octob
er, it was announced today by
Mrs. Blanche Lyman, adminis
trator. Other checks will be un
changed. The increases result from a
change in federal law, which
will provide additional funds for
a two-year period for some wel
fare recipients. They will be
made effective by changes in
standard food costs.
The following persons will re
ceive an additional $5 amount in
their grant, under most circum
stances: Recipient of old age as
sistance aid to the blind, anfl
aid to the. permanently and total
ly disabled.
Increases of $3 monthly, under
most circumstances, will go to
needy "caretaker" relatives and
each child receiving aid under
the dependent children program.
Mrs. Lyman pointed out that
any recipient who is receiving
aid on a boarding basis, as in
hospitals, nursing homes, homes
for the aged or any other board
ing situation, will not receive
the increase. Also unchanged
will be grants to those receiv
ing aid for which federal match
ing funds are not claimed.
The reason some will receive
increases and some will not is
because federal matching funds
are not available for all phases
of the welfare program, and the
state and county budgets are not
large enough this year to cover
the increased coSts, Mrs. Lyman
explained.
The present amount for food
throughout the state is on the
following schedule, Mrs. Lyman
said:
Old age assistance, aid to the
blind and aid to the permanently
and totally disabled, $27 per
months for each person; for aid
to dependent children, amounts
of $26.75 or less per individual,
ranging downward on scales
which are dependent on the
number of persons in the family
unit, and the age of the children
involved.

Oregon's March of Dimes ag
ency today loosed a statistical
blitz as proof positive that resi
dents of the Beaver state are
high among the highest in the
generosity of their support of the
incessant campaign against pol
io. Oregon school children topped
the nation in the 1952 March of
Dimes Portland was the lead
ing American city in the over
100,000 population class and
Oregon finished a snappy fourth
among all the. states in per cap
ita contributions to this year's
record-breaking effort.
The results were announced by
Dr. E. T. Hedlund, Portland,
state March of Dimes chairman.
He said they were based on a
country - wide compilation re
ceived this week from the Na
tional Foundation for Infantile
Paralysis in New York.
Record Campaign
This year's campaign in Ore
gon brought in a record $640,
000 ' which represents a 25 per
cent improvement over 1951's
$512,000. It also represented 42
cents per capita, as compared
with 34 cents in 1951. This av
erage earned Oregon fourth in
the nation, behind Wyoming (56
cents), Nevada (50) and Idaho
(49) but Dr. Hedlund said the
Oregon total was greater than
the combined sums raised in the
three top states. " .
Oregon school children gave1
$42,000 or an average of 25
certs apiece. This, Dr. Hedlund
said, was the ' best per capita
school showing of any state.
Tweity-two thousand dollars
came from Multnomah county
schools. .
The Portland - Multnomah
county per capita contribution
for all givers was 54 cents the
best for any city in the over
100,000 class. However, Gilliam
outranked the other 35 Oregon
counties with a 99-cent average;
Grant county- was second with
76 cents, Sherman and Lake tied
for third with 71 cents and Doug
las next with 66.
