Mother of Polio
Victims Told 6th , .
Escaped Disease
Taylor, Wis. U.R) .For
the first time since polio hit five
of her children, Mrs. Helge Hjor
nevik was almost happy enough
to smile Tuesday.
She learned a sixth child has
not caught the disease as she
had feared.
Oldest Child Dies
-' Polio struck her family last
Wednesday. The oldest child, a
20-year-old girl, died from the
.disease and four other children
were rushed to the hospital.
Mrs. Hjornevik, who can spot
the symptoms of polio by now as
fast as most mothers can spot
the measles, noticed Saturday
that Kenneth, 9, had a fever.
She was afraid he would be
the sixth of her eight children
to fall victim to the disease.
She kept a careful watch over
the boy while her' husband, a
road grader operator stayed with
the other children at the hospit
al. Others Improving
Monday Mrs. Hjornevik saw
a glimmer of hope. The doctor
said Kenneth had escaped the
disease. He said also that the
four Hjornevik children in the
hospital were improving.
Meanwhile, the Black River
Falls, Wis., chapter of the Na
tional Foundation for Infantile
Paralysis promised to help pay
the medical and hospital expen
ses for the family. Friends and
relatives have sent the Hjorne
viks about $300. . . .

New Firestone Store Manager Named Here
Paul Dragieff took over re
cently as the new manager of
the Firestone store, 9th street
and Riverside avenue, to replace
Joe Murray who transferred to
the Tillamook store.

Prasad, a blind beggar on the
streets of Calcutta.
He recently was talked into
buying a sweepstakes ticket.
Tuesday he was told that the
ticket had won him 15,000
pounds ($42,000).

branch for four years before
coming to Medford. He has been
with this company for 15 years,
spending some time with the
Seattle and Denver stores.
Mr. and Mrs. Dragieff and
children, Paul Jr., and Mary
Katharine are now making their
home at 147 South Keene Way

working mother must give up
her job for a month before her
child's birth and rest for a month
after. Her position is held for
her. She is given half pay for
the period. It is also a law in
Uruguay that every employed
woman must work seated. No
standing up on the job allowed
for females. There they still
think the female is the weaker

Fathef Punishes
Boy by Burning
Hand on Stove
San Leandro, Calif. (U.R)
Alec Louis, 41-year-old father of
five children, ' was being held
by police Tuesday for allegedly
punishing his 11-year-old son. by
holding his hand against a hot
stove and rubbing salt in the
blisters.
Police Capt. Steve Lagomars
ino, who said he personally in
tends to file a cruelty complaint
against Louis, said the unem
ployed welder also had been
accused of . inhuman treatment
of the other four children.
Boy Badly Burned
Louis was arrested after the
11-year-old boy, - Joseph . Louis,
ran screaming to the home of
an aunt.
The boy had a badly burned
and cut hand. Joseph said his
father became incensed when he
took a cookie from a jar for him
self and his nine-year-old broth
er. Authorities said Louis -had
taken Joseph's hand, and held
it against the stove. He thrust
the boy's hand first into hot wa
ter, then into cold, the complaint
said.
Salt In Wounds
Police said the father opened
the boy's blisters with a knife
and rubbed salt into the wounds.
Louis said he used the salt
because the sores looked "infect
ed." "The burn taught Joe a les
son," Louis was quoted as say
ing. "I was only fixing it and
cauterizing it with the salt."

Medford, it has been announced
by the State Highway Commis
sion. The Medford job was
among 12 jobs over the state for
which the highway commission
opened bids Monday.

struction of traffic signals are at
Central avenue and 12th street
and at Riverside avenue and
12th street.
