Radiant Heating To Be
Available to Eskimos
New York (U.R) The same
Eskimos who bought ice boxes
are about to get another modern
invention. t
Only this time the developers
hope Eskimos won't be so ingen
ious in adapting the product to
daily requirements of lite above
the Arctic Circle.
"They use refrigerators to
store food so it won't freeze,"
admitted Tex Ziegler, 30-year-old
pilot from Pennsylvania who
has spent the last seven years
flying everything from pressure
cookers to ogruk skins in and out
of the frozen north.
To Have Heat Panels
Tuesday Tex takes off in his
small plane with a supply of
radiant heat panels and a couple
of brand new combination light
and heat fixtures called therm o
lieties. Destination: Kotzebue, an
Alaskan village some 50 miles
above the Arctic Circle.
This seems a radical change
for an igloo formerly heated by
burning seal oil or maybe wil
low branches. Yet one of the
overhead heat-light fixtures is
earmarked for the one-room sod
igloo of an aging Eskimo wom
an. Can Pay With Dolls
"She can pay for it by making
Eskimo dolls," Tex explained. "I
can sell those to post exchanges.
She has arthritis, and electric
heating will do her a world of
good."

the town's generator. The cost of
seal oil being what it is today,

Quake Detector
Puzzles Expert
An armchair had a quake ex
pert guessing Friday.
Prof. L. Donald Leet in charge
of the Harvard University seis
mological station couldn't be
lieve that Leonard Barisano's
armchair could detect earth
quakes. Barisano was sitting In It Sun
day when he felt two "shoves,"
he said, and immediately called
a newspaper.
"Where's the earthquake?" he
asked and got a negative answer.
"Positively an earthquake
somewhere," Barisano said. "I'm
sitting in this chair, a big com
fortable chair, and I get two
shoves, 30 seconds apart."
Dr. Leet confirmed that the
Harvard seismograph recorded
two tremors about 2,000 miles
away about the time Barisano
was disturbed and asked where
the reporter got the tip.
From a man siting in "a large,
overstuffed chair," the reporter
said.
Unfelt by Neighbors
"A large overstuffed chair?"
asked Dr. Leet. "Are you sure?"
None of Barisano's neighbors
felt anything and he said he
would have been willing to for
get it but the chair shook twice.
"One shimmy in the chair
coincidence," Barisano said.

Mrs. Hamilton Named
Candidate Chairman
Mrs. Moore Hamilton, 43 Rose
, avenue, has been appointed
Jackson county chairman of the
"Lambert for State Treasurer"
committee, it was announced to
day by Francis Lambert, Demo
cratic candidate for treasurer.
Mrs. Hamilton took the chair
manship, she said, "after becom
ing familiar with the candidate's
outstanding record as treasurer
of Multnomah county, and with
his civic leadership in Portland."
Lambert was president of the
Oregon Historical society last
year and state chairman of the
United Services to China in 194?
and 1948. His numerous other
civic and community activities
include participation in Red
Cross and cancer drives.
Lambert was in Medford to at
tend a testimonial picnic honor
ing Judge Frank TouVelle. He
also was here during the spring
to attend a Franklin Roosevelt
memorial dinner, according to
Mrs. Hamilton.

Zeigler figures the Eskimos will
regard electric heating as a sav
ing. "The electriglas heating pan
els will go in Archie Ferguson's
house first," the flying trader
explained, "He used to run the
trading post in Kotzebue. I need
some skins from him anyway."
Traded For Skins
Ziegler traded most of the re
frigerators for reindeer skins.
The Eskimos promptly discov
ered that insulated boxes were
ideal for thawing out meat. Pres
sure cookers have become a
popular kitchen item in the
sparsely-populated area, too. Es
kimo women use those in the
accepted fashion.
The igloos around Kotzebue
are made of sod blocks instead
of ice blocks, so for the time
being, there is no possibility of a
gullible Eskimo turning his
house into a puddle by installing
wall radiant heating.
"They like to keep up with
the Joneses the same as we do,"
said the former GI, who owns
his own trading post at Igloo,
halfway between Nome and
Kotzebue. "From seal oil to ra
diant heating isn't as far-fetched
as it sounds."

committee for the 1953 conven
tion. .
Tom Collins, Portland, was re
appointed state adjutant, and
William Bartle, Eugene, was
lamed judge advocate. Others
were Cy Hawyer, Portland, his
torian; George Viaene, Multno
mah, ser geant-at-arms; Ed
Schultze," Portland, and Arthur
A. Erlckson, Eugene, assistant
sergeants-at-arms.
Seaside's bid for the 1953 con
vention site was referred to the
convention committee made up
of Pat Kilby, Klamath Falls;

On Mental Illness
Anoka, Minn. U.R) A physi
cian who reported he accident
ally learned that the drug (pyri
cidin" brought "striking and un
expected" improvement in sev
eral severe mental cases said he
hoped it would be the "key" to
a cure for mental illness.
Dr. A. E. Krieser reported he
was administering the drug to
mental patients afflicted with tu
berculosis to learn if it was ef
fective against that disease when
he noticed the patients' mental
conditions were undergoing a
favorable change.
Favorable Change Noted
Krieser, head of the tubercu
losis control unit of Minnesota's
division of public institutions,
reported his findings to the man
ufacturer of the drug in New
York.
"The study was barely under
way," he said, "before we noted
many of the patients' mental
symtoms are changing."
Krieser and his staff were
"pleasantly surprised to find a
number of patients displayed
definite improvement in their
mental behavior after having re
ceived daily dosages of the drug
for two to three weeks," he said.
Porllanders Arrested
For Child Neglect
Portland (U.R) Three
Portland parents were in jail
Tuesday on charges including
causing the dependency of seven
minor children.
Arrested were Howard Pat
rick Moran 33, his wife, Coleen,
26, and Mrs. Billie Kennedy, 27.
Police said the three had left
their seven children, some of
them ill and without proper clo
thing, alone in an untidy house
while they went out drinking
beer Sunday.
Additional charges of disord
erly conduct also were filed
againts the Morans and their bail
was set at $1250 each. Mrs. Ken
nedy also was charged with
drunkeness with bail set at
$1100.
The children ranged in age
from 11 to threfc months.
President Silent on
Stevenson's Statement
Washington (U.R) The
White House said Monday that
President Truman has no com
ment on a letter in which Gov.
Adlai E. Stevenson promised to
"clean up the mess in Washing
ton" if he is elected president.
The Democratic presidential
nominee made the statement in
a letter Saturday to the Oregon
Journal which is supporting
Stevenson for the presidency.

Wife's Alimony Claims

eral George Neuner Monday in
terpreted a state law regarding
alimony payments to mean that
a wife not living in Oregon can
claim alimony from a former
husband in Oregon whether or
not she has any minor children.
