Saturday said no orders have

Baltic Sea during forthcoming
NATO naval exercises in order
to prevent an incident with Rus
sia. "It was never contemplated
that U.S. ships would enter the
Baltic during 'Mainbrace' Exer
cises" this fall, a Navy spokes
man said. 'Therefore, no orders
have been issued."

The same thing applies to
Naval aircraft, the spokesman
said.
These statements came from
the Norfolk, Va., headquarters
of Adm. Lynde D. McCormick,
supreme allied commander of
NATO forces in the Atlantic.
A previous report indicated
that American ships had been
ordered to stay out of the Baltic
for fear they might provoke the
Russians and international com
plications would develop.

Warships of eight NATO
countries are scheduled to parti
cipate in the exercises, which
have been receiving consider
able attention in the Soviet
press. The Moscow newspaper
Pravda said it would "violate
international agreements" if
U.S. and British ships entered
the Baltic.
Other Soviet newspapers, fol
lowing the same line, said such
a "provocation" would lead to
a serious international incident.

continuing at the rate of one
every six hours.

Condition Critical

Bishop was "in very critical
condition."
Dr. John C. Buntin of the
Hedgecroft staff said he had
never before heard of the drug
and that the records of the
American Medical Association
at Chicago showed no report of
anoidic.
"This is a desperate attempt
to save his life," Bunting said
when he revealed the untested
drug was being used on Bishop.
"I am not convinced it will
help," Bunting said. "This boy
is critically ill. We felt it could
do no harm."
Can Do No Harm
The physicians at the clinic
said they had tested the drug,
which looks like blue-black ink,
and found that it could do no
possible harm, even if it failed
to do any good.
Trencavel had a supply of
the drug flown to Houston from
Mexico City for use on Bishop.
Bunting made it clear that he
was not endorsing the unknown
drug by his use of it. The doctor
said it may take several days to
determine whether anoidic had
any effect on Bishop.

For Few Hours in Hospital

Khan and Rita Hayworth forgot
their marital differences at
least temporarily Saturday in
anxiety over their daughter,
Yasmin, who swallowed some
sleeping pills and was rushed to
a hospital for emergency treat
ment. The distraut parents hurried
three-year-old Yasmin to Santa
Monica hospital Friday night
after their private nurse said
she believed the child had gulp
ed the pills.
In Good Spirits
Yasmin, already suffering
from a mild attack of whooping
cough, appeared in good spirits
despite her experience as the
nurse carried her into the emer
gency room. She was sucking on
a red lollipop and seemed to be
enjoying the after-bedtime trip.

Vidor, at whose home he has

When the physicians announc
ed the little girl was in no dan
ger and could return home, Aly,
Rita and Vidor laughed nervous
ly with relief, bundled Yasmin
back into Rita's car, and drove
off.
The beautiful actres appar
ently telephoned Aly at Vidor's
home to notify him of the acci
dent after they spent the earlier
part of the evening under sep
arate roofs.
Dog Show Entries
To Close Monday
Entries for the fourth annual
all-breed dog show will close
Monday, August 18, according
to the show committee of the
Southern Oregon Kennel club.
The show will be held August
31 at the Medford high school
football field with the gates
opening at 8 a.m.
Anyone wishing to enter a dog

Entertainment will be featur
ed during the show, and the
Roxy Ann Grange will be in
charge of the food. A class for

Judging will begin at 9:30 a.m,
on Sunday, August 31, with the
show lasting until 8 o'clock in

Jewish government official in

He was convicted with Chief
Rabbi Aaron Ohrenstein of the
state of Bavaria of misappropri
ating $655,000 in Deutsch marks
from the funds earmarked for
Nazi victims.
Auerbach was fined $642 in
addition to the jail sentence.
Ohrenstein was fined $2,380 and
sentenced to one year in jail.

Freak Summer Floods

Charges Car Theft
Portland (U.R) The Port
land FBI office reported Satur
day that a federal complaint had
been filed against Stephen B.
Helland, 19, Edmonds, Wash.,
charging him with transporting
a stolen car from . Seattle to
Roseburg, Ore. He was arrest
ed August 7 in Roseburg by
local police.
James B. Poster, special FBI
agent in charge here, said two
ether men accompanied Helland
to Oregon City from Seattle.
They left Helland there, then
returned to Seattle in a car
stolen from a parking lot in Ore
gon City.

For Killing Fox
Philadelphia (U.R) Seven-ieen-year-old
James Berry kill
ed an apparently rabid fox

wooded area near his home
here late Friday.
The youth was shooting at
a target when the fox started
after his dog. When the animal
" turned on Berry, the boy stun
ned him with a blow from his
bow, and then killed the fox
with an arrow.

Salem (U.R) Attorney Gener
al George Neuner Saturday told
Gov. Douglas McKay that he has
no legal authority to spend
money from the emergency fund
to 'indemnity owners of swine
slaughtered by order of the State
Department of Agriculture be
cause they were carriers of vesi
cular exanthema.
Neuner held that the gover
nor's emergency fund can be ex
pended for special requests in
connection with the governor's
duties as imposed by law, but
held that, since no specific law
covered paying owners of infect
ed swine, he could not legally
pay claims for losses sustained
by the owners.
Under the circumstances, Neu
ner said, the owners of the in
fected hogs that have been de
stroyed must either go into court
or apply to the legislature for
financial relief.
