Sox Saturday when he blasted a
three-run homer in the sixtii

called to give the Yankees a
5-4 victory and protect their two
game lead in the American
League pennant race.
Berra's homer, his 24th of the
season, came on the first pitch
from Mickey McDermott, who
had relieved Ray Scarborough
following Phil Rizzuto's single
and Mickey Mantle's walk.
Reynolds Wins 15th
Allie Reynolds, shaky all the
way, gave up nine hits but gain
ed "his 15th victory of the cam
paign and his 100th as a Yan
kee. Berra's first inning single
drove in the first New York run
and Hank Bauer's 14th homer
tied the game at 2-2 in the
fourth.
Doubles by Clyde Vollmer and
George Kell plus Hoot Ever's
single gave Boston a 4-2 lead in
the fifth but then came Berra
and finally the rain which, after
an hour and 30-minute delay,
resulted in the game' being
called.
Dale Mitchell's eighth-inning
homer snapped a 3-3 tie and gave
the second-place Indians a 4-3
conquest of Chicago. Billy
Pierce, the loser despite his six
hit pitching effort, had retired
13 straight batters before being
racked for Mitchell's blow.
Trucks Relieves
Virgil (Fire) Trucks entered
the game in relief and choked a
ninth-inning rally by the Browns
to help Detroit to a 5-2 decision.
Trucks relieved Ted Gray with
the bases loaded and one out.
The Washington Senators
pounded three Philadelphia
pitchers for 12 hits and rolled
to a 10-3 victory as Walt Master
son scattered eight hits. Wash
ington rallied for four runs in
the second inning off loser Alex
Kellner on George Bradshaw's
three-run double plus another
double by Eddie Yost.
Brooklyn stretched its Nation
al league to eight games over
the rained-out second place
Giants by burying the Phillies,
15-0, in a game called in the sev
enth inning because of rain.

the noise, the Cardinals Satur
day quietly moved into a spot as
a major National league con
tender. Less than a dozen games out
of first place, the Cards lead the
league in batting and have two
of the top four spots in the indi
vidual race.
The Cards have a team aver
age of .269 for day games
through Thursday. Stan Musial
leads the league with .330. Enos
Slaughter is fourth with .309.
The Dodgers are second in
team batting with .265 and have
one batter among the top five.

pitcher mumbled into his
crunchy-wunchies Saturday
about the ferocious San Fran
ciso Seals.
"Can they be the same club
that's in seventh place?" Johnny
Lindell might have asked.
Whacked By Seals
Lindell, Hollywood's master
knuckleball artist, drew the
mound assignment against the
sassy Seals Friday night. The
huge righthander was shooting
for his 20th pitching victory. But
the Seals won 9-5, after knock
ing Lindell from the hill with a
five-run fifth inning.
It was only two weeks ago
Saturday that Lindell. glorying
in reports he might be getting
another chance in the major
leagues, got his come-uppance
from those same San Francis
cans. The Seals blasted him out
with a wild early-game flurry
and tabbed him with one of his
losses, the eighth of which he
suffered Friday night.
Increase Lead
The Hollywood setback was
costly. First-place Oakland tram
pled Los Angeles 11-1 to in
crease its league lead to
games over the Stars.
The Star-Seal thing was wild.
It took 2 hours and 38 minutes
to resolve itself. Seven pitchers
saw action. And 30 hits were
rapped out.
In other affairs, San Diego
nailed Sacramento 9-1 and Port
land nipped Seattle 2-1 on Eddie
Basinski's homer.

DeVore Back

from Grants Pass to bolster the
circuit. Ron DeVore will be back
this year as will Jack Gardner,
who just returned from the serv
ice. The first league on Wednes
day night will find Quality Mar
ket, Morning Fresh Bread, Bates
Candy, Table Rock Lumber,
Darling Real Estate, Domestic
laundry, Eagles lodge and First
National bank in action. On the
second shift will be Stevens
Kaiser-Frazer, Big Y Market,
Skinner's garage, E. H. Mann
company, Snoboys and three
teams with sponsors to be an
nounced later.
On Thursday night's first shift
Moose lodge, Foresters lodge,
Barnes Chevrolet, Brown's In
surance, American Legion,
20-30 club, Henry's Drive-in and
Home Appliance will start their
schedules. A league of three-man
teams will roll on the second
shift. Names of teams are yet to
be announced.

Angels Get Win
In PCL Slugfest
Oakland, Calif. (U.R) Los
Angeles and Oakland locked
horns in a 35-hit slugfest Satur
day with the Angels coming out
on the long end of a 15 to 10
score to earn their first series
win and narrow the margin of
the league leading Oaks to one
half game over Hollywood.
The game saw eight hurlere,
five of them Oaks, parade to the
hill. There was scoring in every
inning but the first.
The Angels got off to a 2 to 0
lead in the second, then pecked
away gradually increasing their
lead in every inning until the
seventh, when they held a 10
run advantage. The Oaks rallied
belatedly, picking up four in
both the seventh and eighth, but
relief hurler Ralph Hamner
stopped them cold in the ninth.
The PCL's two - mightiest
sluggers, the Angel's "Max West
and Oakland's Tookie Gilbert
fought for the league's home
run leadership. West poked his
24th four-master of the year

umph over the college All-Stars
in the 19th renewal of the an
nual grudge battle between the
best of the pro's and the best of
the collegians.
"Our performance was below
par," head coach Joe Stydahar
of the Rams said. "Their fum

The Sacramento Solons staged
a four-hit attack in the 11th in
ning of a Pacific Coast league
game here Saturday to down
San Diego, 3 to 1, and clinch, the
series.
Padre hurler Memo Luna had
allowed the Solons only three
hits in holding them scoreless for
10 innings.
But singles by Bob Dillinger
and Diho Restelli opened the
way for Sacramento's fourth
victory. Joe Marty doubled both
in and then a bunt by Joe Gor
don and a fielders choice by
Vinnie Smith scored Marty to
sew up the game.
In the Padres' half of the 11th,
singles by Jack Graham, Tom
Alston and Lou Stringer netted
San Diego one run, but Solon
rookie hurler Roger Osenbaugh
held up to win this first victory
in seven contests. He gave up 10
hits.
Both teams muffed golden op
portunities to score during the
long battle. The Padres loaded
the bases in the fifth but Dick
Faber popped up and Lou Klein
struck out.
