of McGill University, one of the
largest higher-learning institu
tions in the English - speaking
world, has banned the use of the
English language.
McG ill's French summer
school, in past years, a highly
successful project aimed at teach
ing students to speak French,
makes talking a "crime" if it's
done in English.
One of the most rigidly - en
forced rules states that "any stu
dent who persists in breaking the
no-English rule will be brought
before the dean of the faculty
of arts and science, who may dis
miss him from the school."
The regulation - even applies
to husbands talking to their
wives during the six-weeks
course which McGill started to
expedite the learning of conver
sational French.
Students may not go to English
movies or read English-language
newspapers. They may not en
tertain friends in the college res
idence unless they speak French,
Telephone calls have to be hand
led in French and if the stu
dents hear radio programs, they
have to come from French- lang
uage stations.
Prof. P. C. Nardin, director of
the school, said the rule paid div
idends. -
"As the students' command of
spoken French improves rapid
ly, they experience a sense of
achievement,' he said. , "The
greater their enthusiastic adher
ence to the rule, the better and,
quicker their progress.

portunity for success, the presi
dent of the Young Presidents'
organization says.
Richard B. Sellars, 36, told a
YPO board of director's meeting
that there is less chance for job
advancement today than ever be
fore. "High taxes are chiefly ; to
blame," he said. ;

"Many of the men here, I'm
sure," he told the group, "would
admit that they probably could
not succeed if they had to start
all over again under, today's ec
onomic conditions."
The YPO is composed of 317
young men who became presi
dents of their companies before
the age of 39. To be eligible a
presidant must head an indust
rial firm employing 100 or more
persons and having an annual
sales of more than $1,000,000.
Service corporations must have
more than 50 employees and an
annual turnover of more than
$2,000,000.
The average age of the presi
dents is 3414 years.

Perhaps it is utopian to ima
gine what the effect upon the
health and happiness of the
world would be , if every one
called such illness or indisposi
tion cri and followed the golden
rule of hygiene voluntary iso
lation. Voluntary isolation means
keeping not less than 12 feet
away from other persons or, if
this is not practicable, wearing
a suitable mask whenever closr
approach is necessary. In the
booklet Call it C-R-I, for which
send 25c and stamped, self-addressed
envelope, instructions
for making and using such masks
are given.
Cough or sneeze spray range
is up to 12 feet from the mouth
or nose of the person who coughs
or ' sneezes without covering
mouth and nose. Conversation
spray range is less than five
feet; that is, the invisibility or
faintly visible and palpable mois
ture droplets in the spray that
shoots from the mouth in ordi
nary conversation carry only a
few feet, and so, if you can man
age to keep at least five feet
away from the double-blank
stinker who pretends to have
"just a little cold," you are not
likely to catch it; unless, indeed,
