As We Live
THE MARRIAGE IS A FACT
NOW NO MORE CRITICISM!
When a mother feels that her
son has married a woman infer
ior to him, she can make a lot
of trouble for the young people
and for herself by her attitude.
That is what this mother should
avoid:
(Q) "After two months of
courtship, my son married a
girl whose education is not
equal to his. We like her, show
understanding, and try to be
nice. But she is not friendly
and does not warm up. They
go to her parents' home but
rarely come to see us. Shall
I tell her I'm not happy
about our relationship, or
speak to my son, or let things
ride?"
(A) Unless you want to make
things so bad that they never
ran he natched un. avoid talk
ing to your
daughter - in
law about your
feelings. She
will only build
up more re
sentment and
will never
have kind feel
ings toward
you.
Talking to
Dr. Hurlock your son about
his wife is likely to put him on
the defensive and make hi
come to her rescue. That will not
help either.
' Because your daughter-in-law
has not had the educational ad
vantages of your son does not
mean that she will not make him
a good wife and that they will
not be happy together. If -her ed
ucation is very inferior to his,
she can increase her knowledge
by reading and studying at
home. Many young women do
that very successfully.
uouDuess sne senses your
feelings about her, even if you
have tried to be kind and under
standing, and she resents the
way you feel. That is why she
and your son come to see you so
little. While she is with - her
.- , if
IT
family, she does not-feel the
criticism she feels when she is
with you.
Try To Heal Rift
From now on, why not try to
heal the rift that has developed
in the faraily? Make a point of
inviting the young people to
your home often and ask her

family to come from time to time
also. Show them they are really
welcome and that you enjoy
their companionship. If you can
win her family's affection, you
will go a long way toward win
ning your daughter-in-law's af
fection, too.

the nation's great psychologists,

Your Health and Its Care
By DR. WILLIAM BRADY, M.D.
Readers should address inquiries to: William Brady,

NO COLD GRADATIONS OF DECAY
A casual reader--at 'least I
hope not a, regular reader chid
ed me recently because I persist
in telling read
ers that the in
stant after we
attain full
growth and de
velopment, ma
turity or the
A peak of life,
we begin to
die.
House guests
Dr. Brady " """""7
rich man who
dwelt in a castle by the sea were
warned on arrival that any ref
erence to dissolution in the
nabob's presence would . make
the visitor persona" non grata.
Perhaps the reader envisages
the end of the process whereas I
tell readers only about the be
ginning of it.
Dying, it is well to remember,
is naturally a long, one might
say gentle and, from a philo
sophical point of view, interest
ing process, not at all the dismal
plight described by Samuel
Johnson (Bartlett tells me) as
"the cold gradations of decay."
I've been dying for at least
thirty years and I can assure you
young 'uns that it isn't nearly so
sad a fate as you think and I
thought when I was your age.
Of course I remain considerably
younger than you will be when
or if you reach my age, but I
have been hammering away at
you since I was your age in' the
endeavor to teach you how to
keep your arteries soft, your
blood nimble and your teeth. It's
not my fault if you have ignored
these teachings.
The reader who resents en
lightenment about degeneration,
decline and dying added a typi
cal stu oh, oh, I must riot use
that adjective any-more re
mark: "Few people have the
time or will take the trouble to
buy wheat and grind it in the
coffee grinder as you advise us
to do."
How true! And that trait, un
willingness to take the trouble
to get out of the wrong way of
living, accounts for the early be
ginning and short termination of
the dying process in America
today.
Buying and grinding wheat is
just one of the "troubles" you
have to take today if you pre
serve the characteristics of
youth, extend the prime of life
in both directions, build and
maintain a higher level of posi
tive health throughout the life
cycle.
In the booklet The 7 Keys to
Vile, for which send 25c and
stamped, self -addressed enve
lope, I have condensed as much
of these teachings as possible.
However, if that seems steep,
send just a stamped, self-addressed
envelope and ask for the
pamphlet Young Folks and Old
Folks.
If that is too much trouble,
just settle back in your chimney
corner and listen to your arter
ies hardening.

I don't take trouble very well
myself, bi3 troubles' or little
troubles. Other neople's trou
bles, that is. Some readers tell
me I'm hard boiled and cynical
hecause I strive to keen natho-

from what most correspondents
say, that the less medicine and
the more hygiene we can serve
newspapet readers the better for
their health and happiness.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Cucumbers
What elements are in cucumbers?
Thev cause indieestion when I eat
them. Others tell me the same.
(F. F. J.)
' Answer Ho-hum, who cares? Next
to mashed potato I can think of noth
ing less interesting ... A pound of
cucumbers will yield 75 calories, near
ly a third as many as a pound oi lem
ons, a little less than a pound of let
tuce. If you like 'em, they can do no
harm, but why a biped shoul eat

by her doctor, also he advises a dose

Answer Paregoric is camphorated

"dormita!" may be. Surely even a lit
tle opium is not good for a baby. Send

Imagination Used In
Sturgis, S.D. (U.R Pioneers
used their imagination when
they picked names for geogra
phical features and mines here
abouts. Here, in the Black Hills of
South Dakota, are such names as
Shirttail Gulch, Holy Terror and
Homestake Mines, Bogus Jim
Creek, Deadman Creek, Two
Bit Gulch.
Shirttail Gulch was named
when an irate father, clad only
in nightshirt, chased his daugh
ter's noisy and over-eager suitor
up the canyon.
A prospector named his rich
prospect Holy Terror - for his
wife.
