Shakespearean Festival
Broadcast To Be Saturday
Ashland Free tickets for Saturday's coast-to-coast broadcast
irom the stage of the Shakespearean festival theatre Saturday aft
ernoon are being distributed at a number of business places in
Ashland and Medford.
In Medford, tickets may be
had on request at Mann's De
partment store, Central Rexall
drugs and Robinson Bros.
In Ashland tickets may be
had at the theatre box office, at
Ashland drug,- Ingle's drug, the
Plaza restaurant and the Mart.
Doors at the theatre will open
at 2:45 p.m. Saturday and the
broadcast, over the NBC net
work through the facilities of
affiliate KMED in Medford, will
be at 3:30 p.m., Pacific standard
time.
No one will be admitted to the

theatre after 3:20 p.m., however,
festival -authorities have an
nounced. Featured on the program this
year, the second for the festival
on a nationwide hookup, will be
22 minutes from one of the plays
of the season, "Julius Caesar,"
and a short introductory section
devoted to the Rogue valley and
festival history and methods of
production.
Producing the radio show for
the second year will be Andrew
C. Love of Hollywood, producer
director of such network offer
ings as "Short Story" and "The
Standard Hour."
Technical work on the show,
which will be done "live" from
the festival stage, will be by
Ray Johnson, chief engineer at
KMED . and his staff. The pro
gram will be by direct wire to
San Francisco, where it will be
released over the network.

Eight Paintings -Gold
Hill Artist
Used by Magazine
Eight paintings of Jackson
ville and the Rogue River val
ley done by Fritz Wertz, Jack
son county artist, are reproduced
in color in the August issue of
Ford Times, publication of the
Ford Motor company.
The eight were selected from
a group which the company pur
chased from Mr. Wertz last win
ter. The pictures are used to
illustrate a story about Jackson
ville titled "Oregon's Liveliest
Ghost Town," ancl written by
Ellis Lucia, newspaper reporter
and journalist from Forest
Grove, Ore.
The pictures are of The Unit
ed States hotel in Jacksonville,
Jim Cornutt's barnyard, the old
county courthouse in Jackson
ville, Table Rock, the Lyden
House, the Masonic building, the
Orth Building and Redman Hall
and Kottage Kitchen.
The color reproductions, while
small, retain much of the live
liness and color -of the old west
for which the Wertz watercolors
are noted. The paintings purch
ased by the company have be
come part of its permanent art
collection and will be shown in
this country and in Europe. The
issue also carries a brief article
about the artist and a small pic
ture on the "contributor's page."
In the article the Forest
Grove reporter recounts many
of the incidents and' legends
about Jacksonville. He retells
the one about President Ruther
ford B. Hayes staying at the
United States hotel and remark
ing, when presented a bill for
$120, that he did not intend
buying the place. Reporter Lu
cia tells of the discovery of gold
at Jacksonville, the gold rush
days, Indian raids, epidemics of
Dr. Margery Bailey, Stanford
university, and Angus Bowmer,
festival founder and producing
director. They will be interview
ed by Jennings Pierce, KMED
manager and long-time NBC as
sociate. Bud Beechwood of the
staff of the valley - station will
announce.

Swimming Party Meld
After Meeting in Park
Junior Degree of Honor met
Saturday in Hawthorne' park,
with Darleen Morrow, president,
conducting the meeting. Junior
guests present were Jean and
Billy Hobbs, Patty McCue, Den
ny Lockman and Marcella Free
man. Darlene Morrow read a poem
and prayer from The Young
Crusader. Three members were
presented birthday cards and the
birthday song was sung. Carol
Boswell led the club. yell. .
' Following a . swimming and
wading party, the children were
given a watermelon feed.
Next meeting of the club will
be September 13 at the home of
the director, Mrs. H. G. Wilson,
7 Chestnut street, and a wiener
roast is planned.

For Birthday Party
Wenonah club has planned a
birthday party today at 8 p.m.
at Redman hall. It will honor
members having birthdays dur
ing July and August.
