As We Live
MAN SNUBS STEADY WORK.i
WIFE MUST CONTROL PURSE
Hand - to - mouth living is
very precarious. You never
know, from one minute to an
other, what will turn up to up
set the situation. The young mr
Vier who wrote the following
letter is beginning to realize
this:
(Q) "I have been married
for two years and we have a
baby 11 months old. My hus
band is good to us but he does
not work regularly. He hasn't
had more than one full week,
out of every month since we
were married. I even went to
work to help him out, think
ing that might change him but
it didn't. If I fry to persuade
him to go to work, he doesn't
speak to me for .days. Every
lime a little money comes in,
he'll take off and then I'll
have to use what I saved for
the bills. The way things are
going, neither the baby's nor
my future is secure."
(A) No one can count on com
plete security cut you are en
titled to at least reasonable se-
x curity for your
self and your
child. This you
do not have
nor does your
husband show
any apprecia
tion of the im-
p o r tance of
such security,
Unless there
Dr. Hurlock on either sidg
of your family who can or will
help 'you out in an emergency,
you must be prepared to b self
reliant.' That means, you are the one
who must manage the family in
come and you must drive your
husband to harder work, even
if it floes annoy him and make
him grumpy.
- It is ridiculous for a married
m-n to think he can get along
with working only one week a
month. If he can't get more
work in his(present job, there
are plenty of other jobs avail-

able. Insist that he work and
earn more money.
Then, insist that he give you
all or nearly all of his earnings
to manage for the family. You
can turn over a reasonable sum
for his pleasures but he cannot
have pleasures at the expense of
the family's security. Keep your

want to have any security in
your life.

Your Health and Its Care

HOW TO GET
Infection is defined as the pro
cess of invasion of the tissues
by disease-producing micro-or-
! ganisms wmcn
produce in
jury. Note
that in this def
inition nothing
is. said about
"weather per
mitting." .
I cannot
vouch, for the
source of the
story but it is
s c i'entifically
Dr. Brady
acceptable. It concerns a class
in medical school yawning
through a lecture on the com
mon cold. The instructor, half
way through his canned speech
and noting the disinterest of the
class, called for volunteers to
"catch cold" in order to provide
actual clinical instruction on the
subject. .'
"Well," asked the volunteers,
"how do you catch cold?" "Tsk
tsk," responded the instructor,
"everybody knows how to catch
cold. Go out and get wet and
chilled and stand in a draft some
where." .Ten of the twelve vol
unteers did just that. The other
two, with time off for the pur
pose, decided to skip the whole
thing and went to a movie in
stead. .
Yes, you're right. Two days
later, the only students who had
"colds" were the two who had
gone to the movies.
It is generally known that the
nose and throat of perfectly
healthy persons contains a large
variety of disease - producing
germs. The quaint notion still
persists in unenlightened quar
ters that wetting, chilling, and
the like, decreases the "resis
tance" of a person to those germs
to the extent that they then be
come infected with their own
germs.
The facts are that a person is
immune to his own germs as
long as they are confined to the
usual sites and that infection, as
such, only occurs when someone
else's germs invade the tissues.
If such were not the case, . it
seems doubtful that the human
race could survive very Jong.
The Eskimos, for instance, de
spite the chilling to which they
are constantly exposed, catch
"cold" only when visitors from
the south arrive. But while the
"common cold" is not one of
their main disorders, they are
extremely susceptible to tuber
culosis which passes from one to
the other. The element of chief
importance- is CONTACT or
close proximity. If you want to
get infected, get in close contact
with a person who has an infec
tion. The weather has nothing to
do with this.
It has long been known that
tuberculosis strikes hardest
amongst' the malnourished vic
tims of unsanitary surroundings.
Nevertheless, most health de
partments insist that a child not
be allowed to live in a house
where any one with active tub
erculosis lives despite the fac
tors of nutrition and sanitation,
good or bad, which may affect
them. Here again the element of
CONTACT or close proximity is
stressed as the factor of import
lor the
finest
in radio
entertainment
sports and
news . . .
.....-

INFECTED
tance; Even a well nourished
person in sanitary surroundings
can be infected by contact.
The person who attributes-his
"cold" to a drafty office or shop,
or to cold or damp weather, is
simply ignorant of the facts. The
parent who bundles up a child
with overshoes, mufflers, parkas
and the like with the thought
that such "protection" against
the weather will prevent the
child from "catching cold" or
catching anything else is kidding
himself.
The parent who keeps a child
indoors because the weather is
"inclement" and subjects the
child to all the accumulated disease-producing
germs contained
in the atmosphere of the "over
heated, "draftless" house, serves
only . to perpetuate the hoary
malarkey of fish-wives and prat
tlers to the detriment" of the
health of the child,
I repeat: Infection is caused by
germs not by weather.

Salem (UP.) The railroad

W. C. Hefner, chairman of the
