Awning Fire The fire de
partment was called to put out
an awning fire at the Selby
Glass -company, 303 North Bart-
lett street, at 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
Firemen reported that the fire,
caused by a cigarette being toss
ed onto the awning, burned a
hole in the center of the awning.

arrived in Korea June 9, 1952,
and is a mortarman in Company
M. Prior to entering the Army
in November, 1951, Pvt. Hogen
son was a service station attend
ant at Bud's Texaco station,
Medford.

Rawstern, 19, and his sister, El
len Rawstern, 18, whose parents,
Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Ambrose, live
at route 2, box 545, Medford,
are leaving tonight to enlist in
the Air Force. After taking tests
in Portland, Bernard will be
stationed in Oakland, Calif, and
Miss Rawstern will be stationed
near San Antonio, Tex. Both are
graduates of Medford high

Private funeral services for
Earl Pete Updike, 61, of route
one, Eagle Point, who died at
home Saturday, will be held
Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Perl funer
al home with the Rev. Rolf Han
sen, of the Central Point Com
munity Bible church, officiating.
Interment will be in Siskiyou
Memorial park.
The deceased, a farmer by oc
cupation, was born in Grand
Junction, Colo., on Jan. 26, 1891,
and was married to Edith Nich
ols, who survives, in Portland
on Dec. 18, 1943. He had spent
most of his life as a cattle raiser
in eastern Oregon
Other survivors include two
sons, Pete and Michael, both of
Eagle Point; a. sister, Mrs. J. C.
Stiles, Goldendale, Wash.; a
brother, James, Bremerton,
Wash., and several nieces and
nephews.

Charges Result
In Fines for Two
Two valley men were fined
for assault and battery in dis
trict court Saturday, according
to Sheriff Howard Gault.
Jim Duggage Monday, 44, gen
eral delivery, Central Point, was
fined $50 for assault and battery
against Alice Monday on the
Table Rock road, and Arthur
Day Dillon, 33, Box 204, Talent,
was fined $25 for assault and
battery against Martha Dillon
on August 9.
In other court action, Michael
Francis Heaverne, 31, of Kla
math Falls, was fined $10 and
costs on a charge of being drunk
on a public highway, and Fred
Gyer Spencer, 45, of Crescent,
Ore., pleaded innocent to a
charge of drunk driving.

position of the following cases:

girls had 50 cents between them
plus a desire to go roller skat
ing. There was one hitch. The
money they had would admit
only one. '
But after watching the other
girls skate awhile, they came up
with "an idea. They went to the
owner and asked him if it was
a quarter after eight. He glanced
at his watch and said ye.
"We'll go skating then. Give
us two tickets."
He chuckled at the ancient
gag and gave them the tickets.

Rex Lee Johnson, Rogue Riv
er, and John Rudolph Baldwin,
Ashland, were involved in a mi
nor traffic accident in Phoenix
Sunday morning, the state po
lice report. Police said Johnson
started to turn across the high
way and was hit by Baldwin's
car. Damage was minor and no
citations were issued.

Eagle Point Bessonette and
Graff, Medford contracting firm,
was successful bidder for con
struction of an elementary
school addition here, school offi
cials announced.
The firm made a $76,400 offer
under an alternate plan. There
were four Other bidders.
Six classrooms and lavatories
are contained in the addition.
Construction will commence im
mediately and completion is an
ticipated in about 90 days. How

years old.
Gebhard has posted bail of
$100.

Two Butte Falls Men
Given Jail Sentences
Three Butte Falls men were
sentenced to 10 days in city jail
for vagrancy this morning by
City Judge Warren Lesseg.
Clyde Donald Gouglin, 24;
William C. Merryweather, 25,
and Raymond Elmer Couglin,
32, all Butte Falls, were arrest
ed early this morning. The
police officer said they were act
ing suspiciously at Main street
and Central avenue. .
Police records show Merry
weather climbed into a pickup
truck there while the other two
stood outside. Merryweather is
not thought to have taken any
thing. Judge Lesseg also sentenced
Thomas P. Chaney, 51, Camp
White, to jail today. Chaney was
given 50 days for being drunk
in a public place.
State Forest Patrol
Extinguishes Fires
The state forest patrol put out
two small grass fires Sunday, it
was reported this morning. One
of the fires was near Ashland.
The other was near Medford, be
tween Buckshot road and Spring
street. There were no reports as
to size of the fires this morning.
