ard H. DeGroot was promoted
recently to seaman, first class,
VS. Navy. DeGroot, the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Herman DeGroot,
route 3, box 258, Medford, is
Stationed in Pearl Harbor and
has been in the service since
September, 1951. He Is a grad
uate of Phoenix high school and
received his basic training at
San Diego.
Forester Picnic The Inde
pendent Order of Foresters,
Court Rogue River Valley, will
hold their annual picnic for
members and guests at the Elks
picnic grounds at 1 p.m. Sunday,
August 10. Those attending are
to bring a picnic lunch, and ice
cream, coffee, and cold drinks
will be served. A dance orches
tra will furnish entertainment
for the afternoon.
To Philadelphia Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Meacham, 40 Quince street,
Medford, left last Thursday by
bus for Philadelphia, Penn'., to
attend the Grand Aerie Eagles

returned to Medford recently
after taking a two-month visit
with her daughter, Mrs.: Costin
Bufkin, Lubbock, Tex. A daugh
ter was born to the . Bufkins
while Mrs. Wright J was there.
Convalescing ? Lester Ad
ams, who underwent;; surgery
last week at the Community hos
pital, returned Saturday to his
home on Thompson creek in the
Applegate valley. Mrs. Adams
said he will be able to have vis
itors the latter part of the com
ing week.
Climb Mountain Miss Lov-
elle Davies, 1779 Spring street,
and Fred Chez, 812 Palm street,
climbed Mt. Shasta, Calif., Fri
day. They said that when they
reached the top fog had closed
in and they slid down about
3,500 feet on their way back
to the lodge. They took colored
slides of the mountain on their
hike.
Midshipman Visits Ernest
Stamm midshipman second class
at the U.S. Naval Academy, An
napolis, Md., on leave from the
academy, is visiting his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest A. Stamm,
20- South Peach street. Stamm,
who has been at the academy
two years finished Medford high
school in 1949 then attended
Oregon State college one year.
He is to return to the academy
September 6. '

Two worthless checks were re
ported to the city police .Friday
night and Saturday morning.

accepted a bad $20 check Friday
from a woman between 30 and
35 ears of age. The cheek was
written on a Roseburg bank.

bins, 41, who died Thursday, will
be held Tuesday, at 1 p.m., in
Conger-Morris chapel, with the

ville Presbyterian church, offici

Mr. Robbins was born April
29, 1911, in Columbia county,
Wise, and had lived in southern

koosa, Wise., he was married to
Sophia Hoekstra, who survives.
Other survivors include two
daughters, Diane, 13; and Judith,
10; his father, John L. Robbins;

waukee, Wise; and three sisters,
Mrs. Pat Dawson, Los Angeles;
Mrs. Phillip Smith, Blackwell,
Okla.; and Mrs. C. E. Heyer,
Highlandville, Mo.

Receives Sentence:

was sentenced to three months
in the county. Jail by District
Judge Rawles Moore yesterday,
according to Deputy District; At
torney Robert' Dickey. -
Taylor was charged with dis
orderly conduct August 1 when
he wounded another Camp
White man, Earl Armitage, with
a knife during a fight.
Joe Allen Page and John P
Paul Paulazzo, both Yreka,
pleaded guilty yesterday to a
charge of forgery. Their case
has been continued for sentenc
ing until FBI records are secur
ed. They pleaded guilty to steal
ing a $1,250.42 check in Treka
and forging it in Ashland Wed
nesday. They were aught in
Yreka and extradited here to
appear before. Circuit Judge H..

George T. Parker, charged
with disorderly conduct for a
fight last Monday with ' Fred
Warner, a Yellow Cab driver,
withdrew his plea of guilty. His
trial in. district court has been
set August 26.
Resolution Honors
Dr. Ralph E. Green
A resolution honoring the late
Dr. Ralph , E. Green, , who died
here July 29, was adopted un
animously tills fw e e k,! by - the
board of directors of the Jackson
County Federal Savings, and
Loan association. . Dr. Green was
a member of the board for more
than 20 years. .
The resolution states: '
Whereas Dr. R.; E. Green
served faithfully as treasurer of
the association ior many years
and gave freely of his time, cowv
sel arid advice to the association,
its officers and employees and
Whereas his general interest
in the association was a great
factor in the growth and success
of the association and
Whereas the-passing of Dr. R.
E. Green is therefor a great loss
to the Jackson County Federal
Savings and Loan association, its
officers and employees
Therefore, be it resolved that
the board, of directors deplores
the passing of Dr. R. E. Green,
its late treasurer and director.

MacDonald spoke before . mem
bers of various local unions and
the Central Labor council.':
' MacDonald outlined decisions
of the state convention: held ,re
cently in Portland, on organiza
tion, legislation and other sub
jects. He stated that women's
auxiliaries to local unions - ar
being formed throughout - the
state. The woman are taking an
active part in union affairs, and
through this activity are becom
ing more informed politically, he
added.
MacDonald urged union mem
bers to become better acquaint
ed with their communities and
to become more active in" com
munity affairs. He pointed out
that, in" order to participate ful
ly in such activities, all persons
must also be acquainted with the
persons who represent them in
city, county and state govern
ment. MacDonald outlined the state
federation's program-.- on , legis
lation for the coming year. It
includes more registration plac
es; "less than a bottle" liquor
legislation; opposed to closure of
stations and curtailment of ser
vice by railroads; an increase
in unemployment benefits; high
er salaries for teachers; an in
crease of social security bene
fits and endorsement for con
struction of Pelton, Hells Can
yon and Big Bend dams.
Lane Commended
By Local Chamber
Don Lane was commended by
the Jackson County Chamber of
Commerce this week for his
services as secretary and mana
ger of the organization since
August 1, 1947. Lane, has .re
signed the position effective
Sept. 1, 1952 to accept a similar
job with the East Side Commer
cial club in Portland.
The commendation, passed in
resolution form, points to Lane's
assistance in connection with a
wide program of committee
work, on improved highways,
additional irrigation projects,
wider utilization of lumber pro
ducts, and development of broad
er attractions to the tourist trade.
It also points out that Lane
has been active in a wide variety
of civic and fraternal affairs and
has assumed a large responsibil
ity, for such projects as promo
tion of the Annual Shrine Pear
Bowl .football game and, the
Medford Plan.
The chamber expresses its
"sincere appreciation" for Jhe
job Lane has done here and
wishes him success in his new
position.
