Cannery Layoffs Bring
Unemployment Since
Salem (U.R) Cannery lay
offs in recent weeks resulted in
more unemployment in Oregon
on Aug. 1 than at any time since
late in May, according to reports
from local offices of the State
Unemployment Compensat ion
Commission.
The number of Oregon work
ers actively seeking jobs climbed
from 17,078 two months ago to
18,236 last week the biggest
early summer increase since the
end of the war. A year ago 13,233
job seekers were reported.
Benefits' Advance Sharply . ,
Benefits paid cannery workers
advanced sharply in recent
weeks. Only 383 employees of
food processing plants received
checks early in July but 1,342
were listed last week nearly a
fourth of all claimants. Mean

Ilsley Boone, 73-year-old Baptist
,i minister who has headed the
V American Sunbathing Associa
tion since the early 1930s. .
"Uncle Danny" Boone took
over as top nudist when men
still felt it was daring to doff the
tops of their swim suits. He says
he may live to see the day when
the bottom comes off, too.
Women To Be First
Women will have flung mod
esty aside long before, Boone
. thinks. If you don't agree, just
' look around you, he advises.
"If we are to judge from the
past two decades," he said, "in
ancther 20 years there will be a
. great deal of unsegregated nude
bathing on public beaches. The
day is here already when thou
' ' sands of people while not nudists
themselves, feel it is all right
for those who follow the nudist
principles to practice nudism."
Censure Removal Goal
Boone described the goal of
the nudist movement as the re
moval of censure, both moral and
legal, ' from those who wish to
disrobe for reasons of comfort
or health. Great strides already
have been made at bathing re
sorts along the Danube in Aus-
; tria, on the North and Black Seas
and on French islands in the
Mediterranean.
There are a few beaches along
the Atlantic seaboard where "the
young people of the community"
enjoy mixed swimming in the
while, the number of women
seeking jobs was estimated at
7,804, more than have been seen
by local offices since mid-April.
With bean picking now well
under way and late "fruits be
ginning to come in, cannery em
ployment is expected to pick up
considerably during the next few
weeks, peaking early in Septem
ber. Payments Increase
Payments to insured workers
in July reached $469,156, an in
crease of 31 per cent from the
corresponding month of 1951 but
slightly below the postwar aver
age for this season. Since the
beginning of the 1952-53 benefit
year, 15,200 persons have filed
claims as compared with 13,149
at this time a year agb, the com
mission said. Fewer lumber and
altogether, he reported. And
Boone can recount a bit of his
tory that proves such goings-on
were socially acceptable at New
port, R. I., 100 years ago. .
"It was the custom there to
keep the entire beach available
for nude bathing of the servants
of wealthy families,-except for
the few hours a day when the
masters . went to the beach
clothed to dunk in the surf," tie
said. "A red ball hoisted atop a
flagpole signalled the availability
of the beach for unclothed swim
ming after the 'classes' left the
strand to the 'masses'."
Boone hopes the "classes" will
be answering the red ball signal
at Newport by 1972.
Horses Becoming Scarce
As Britishers Eat Jhem
Manchester, England (U.R)
Britain faces a shortage of
horses because 'its meat-hungry
residents are eating them at the
rate of 50,000 a year, the Man
chester Guardian has disclosed.
The Guardian based its state
ment on a survey which said .the
shortage also was partly caused
by blackmarketing of horses to
the Continent.
Man Too Busy To Send
Bill for Money Due Him
Milwaukee (U.R) The mu
nicipal Board of Purchases has
been-trying to persuade Leo
Schneider to present a bill for
supplies his firm sold to the city.
Schneider said he was "too
busy"-right now but would try
to send a statement soon. The
bill amounts to $620,652.

Notice is hereby given that the
Board of Commissioners of the
Maple Park Water District, Jackson
County, Oregon, will at 7:30 P.M. on
the 15th -day of August 1952; at the
office of the Treasurer of said Dist
rict. Medford, Oregon, offer for sale
an issue of S27.500.00 of general obli
gation bonds of said District hereto
fore approved by the electors and by
the Board of said District.
Said bonds shall be in denomina
tions of $500 each, maturing serially
in numerical order; bonds numbered
1-17 maturing one annually on July
1, beginning in 1957 and continuing
through 1962; bonds numbering 18-25,
maturing two annually on January 1
and July 1. beginning in 1963 and
continuing through 1971: and bonds
numbered 26-55. maturing three an
nually, one on January 1 and two on
July 1, beginning in 1972 and continu
ing through 1981. Said bonds shall bear
interest at a rate not to exceed five
per cent (5) per annum, payable
