Furriers Must Now Be Factual
In Hanging Name Tags on Coats
New York (U.R) Lady, thats
no ermine, that's a good old
American weasel.
Beginning Saturday, furriers
must be strictly factual when
they label merchandise made
from animal pelts. No more Hud
son seals, lapins, beaverettes or
mink-dyed marmots.'
Must Face Facts
Women have got to face facts
as well as the furriers, since a
label lettered "rabbit" makes de
lusions of a mink bargain diffi
cult. But mink will still be mink.
The fur products labelling act
passed by Congress last August
goes into effect Saturday. Only
the name of the animal that pro
duced the fur will be permitted
on fur wrap labels from now on.
"Now that she knows she has

will feel more confident buying
furs," said Max Bachrach, head
of the Fur Research Institute. "If
it's rabbit, you gotta call it rab
bit now. Mouton must say mou
ton .processed lamb. Certain
kinds of ermine must be labelled
weasel. . . "
Ermine Is Weasel
Here Mr. Bachrach was inter
rupted.
"You mean women will wear
weasel evening wraps?" a re
porter asked.
"If it's weasel, it's weasel,"

Absence of disastrous fires in
any part of the Camp White gov
ernment area during the period
of occupancy by the V.A. Domi
ciliary is a record of some signifi
cance at this particular time
when emphasis on fire preven

given.
Fire Chief William Cody at
tributes his good fortune in con
trol "80 per cent to effort and
20 per cent to luck". The effort
is exerted through constant pa
trol and Inspection by a corps
of 15 experts and the vigilance
and assistance of "volunteers".
Only a few sections of the
buildings occupied are under spe
cial restrictions. These include
the theater balcony, . closed to
the public due to inadequate
exits, and the supply, the ware
houses, paint shop and surgery
room in Building 201, where
smoking is prohibited.
One of the special precautions
unique at Camp White is the ade
quate placing of buckets partly
filled with sand for disposal of
cigarette stubs, ashes and burned
matches.
Detail men service these fa
cilities in the daytime, and a spe
cial man makes the rounds at
night, cleaning out extra trash.
James I. Cassal, a member, is
responsible for this important
fire prevention measure. He was
especially commended by the
Chief.
The fire crew and the guard
force patrol the entire reserva
tion regularly with an eye for
fire hazards. Then there are peri
odic drills with the two pumpers
and hose, at which time the aux
iliary fire crew of personnel goes
into action. The members of this
crew are:
Jack Goodwin, Charles Ice,
Don Pulley, Bob Doran, Sam
Samuels, Bob Finley, and Gene
Hardy.
"I do wish to express my ap
preciation for the cooperation
received in this undertaking of
fire prevention and control at
Camp White," Chief Cody declares.
Further precautions during the
day are taken when the men are
at mess by the activity of mem
ber fire guards who remain on
the premises.
The alertness of members at
all times in detecting smoke
when trash ignites in waste bas
kets is also noticable at Camp
White.
The system isn't fool proof,
but it does seem to work in keep
ing Camp White under the
"green light".
About the only use for the
liberal distribution of fire ex
tinguishers is to ornament the
walls. They are kept charged
and ready for use; however,, in
emergencies. - - - I
Manager Paul A. Hatton em
phasized that the program of
fire prevention here is in line
with the national effort to keep
people fire conscious.
"It is especially important to
us with construction around that
is not fire resistant," Mr. Hatton
points out. "And we have to re
main conscious at all times of
this danger."
Foots Creek
Foots Creek Mrs. V. Ci Row
ell left last week for Bakersfield,
Calif., to join her husband and
son who are employed in the oil
fields there, and are to be trans
ferred to South Africa or Old
Mexico soon.
Mrs. E. Biden and sister, Mrs.
Agnes Rudd of Chicago visited
Mrs. George Lance recently. Mrs.
Rudd had spent several weeks in
Canada visiting relatives. Mrs.
Biden and Mrs. Rudd are aunts
of Mrs. Lance's niece, Mrs. E. D.
Woody of Coronation, Alberta,
Canada, and she visited with her
while there.
Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Wales of
Baldwin Park, Calif., and Mr.
and Mrs. Elmer Baehr of Long
Beach, Calif., spent last week
here with Mr. and Mrs. Clyde
Crimmel. Mr. Wales is Mrs.
Crimmel's brother. Other recent
guests of the Crimmels were his
brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs.
Henry Crimmel and their son
and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Crim
mel of Casper, Wyo.; Miss Betty
Phillips of Portland, and Mrs.
Marie Degarimore of Long
Beach.
A farewell party was given at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ace
Adams August 2 for Mr. and
Mrs. Don Prettyman. Attending

white or pale beige. Weasels are
raised in warmer climates.
They're darker, maybe yellow or
light brown."
Several inquiries turned up a
noticeable absence of weasel
coats. Apparently, in spite of fur
experts insistence that they are
quite willing to call a weasel a
weasel or a muskrat a muskrat,
certain fur categories will be
avoided as much as possible.
Weasel wraps are one.
To Identify Country
Persian lamb must be identi
fied by country if it doesn't come
from the Middle East. The fur
that-used to be called American
broadtail now will be South
American processed lamb. Hud
son seal must be called by its
real name, muskrat.
"There will be some confusion
for a while," admitted Leo Rit
ter, head of Ritter Brothers Fur
Co. "Even mink, which is the
largest selling fur, has many var
iations. Mutations have produced
many different mink shades, like
Aleutian, starlight and silverblu
When a mutation is first intro
duced and the skins are rare, the
price is high."
But if the word "mink" ap
pears anywhere on the label, a
girl knows she's getting the real
thing. Glamour captions like
mink-dyed muskrat are no longer
permissable.
Fox Terrier Cares
For Strange Family
Dongola, 111. (U.R) Penny, a
black and brown fox terrier
with a strange mother instinct,
never gives up.
The dog, a pet of Mr. and Mrs.
Floyd Dillow, took charge of
three baby chicks and mothered
them faithfully. Then tradegy
struck.' The dog rolled on her
charges while sleeping and
smothered them.
Now Penny has another family,-
a tiny guinea chick and a
three-week-old chicken. Mrs.
Dillow said the dog is more care
ful with her second family than
she was with the first. Penny
made a nest in the cool earth
under a brush in the Dillow's
front yard where the" chicks will
be well protected.

Creek store August 1 and are
redecorating' and putting in a
larger stock of groceries. The
Lanes have a home on Evans
creek where they have lived the
past five years. Bilbee will enter
the 7th grade in the Rogue River
school this year.' '
Mrs. Ella Elders, sons Don and
Newton, returned last week from
Oroland, Calif., where they at
tended the funeral services of
their father, D. W. Forbes. He
was 8? years old and left seven
children, 19 grandchildren and
11 -great-grandchildren.
Mr.-and Mrs. R. E. Cowie are
now located near Hillsboro, Ore.,
where they have leased the Air
way Grocery store and gas sta
tion. They like Hillsboro very
much.

Professor, Lost
In Oregon Wilds,
Ends Up in Court

Constance, botany professor at
University of California, went
into the forest to look for some
interesting specimens of flora.
The central Oregon pine for
est north of Suttle lake is rugged
and wild. The professor got lost.
Calling up his rusty knowledge
of woodslore, the professor
lighted a signal fire to attract
Forest Service lookouts. The fire
was a fizzle.
Lighted Larger Fire
So the Berkeley, Calif., teach
er of things botanical lighted a
larger, more vigorous fire. This
one got too big. It fanned out in
all directions. The professor beat
a hasty retreat and in fleeing
to keep from getting scorched
he ran smack-dab onto a high
way and became unlost.
Searchers Spot Fire
But, meantime, a forest service
party called to the search for the
missing professor by worried
relatives at Eugene spotted the
renegade signal'fire. The search
ers dropped the hunt for the pro
fessor and" gave active atten
tion to battling the flames. The
professor's signal fire spread over
four acres before it was con
trolled. The professor will appear in
Jefferson county justice court to
explain to the judge why he
started a fire in a forest without
a permit.
Fawn Recovers After
Losing Leg in Combine
Carlyle, 111 (U.R) Bambi, a
fawn who came out on the

wheat combine, was reported
doing well despite los of one leg
and many cuts.
The fawn wandered into the
path of the combine on a farm
near here and was close to death
when taken to Dr. James M.
Piatt, veterinarian.
Dr. Piatt amputated one rear
leg and patched up cuts on the
little deer's other legs. He put
Bambi on a ."baby formula" of I
milk and syrup and said she ap
peared to be recovering.
Vehicle License Fees
In Slight Decline
Salem .(U.R) Oregon's motor
vehicle fees income was down
slightly during the second quar
ter of the year, according to Sec
retary of State Earl T. Newbry.
Total second quarter fees were
$2,831,288.28, making the '.otal
for the first six months of 1952
$5,872,369.20. The decrease from
the first quarter amounted to
$209,792.64, Newbry said. The
report covers business transacted
in 30 field Offices located around
the state, mail transacftons and
fees collected by county sheriffs.
