power might easily spell the dif
ference, between victory and de
feat in a third World War.
The science of underwater
warfare has been developed to a
point where submarines could
largely neutralize the vast war
potential of the North American
continent, according to naval
Dlanners.
Consequently, the power to
destroy submarines seeking to
cut trans-oceanic lifelines is the
most urgent aim of the Canadian
Navy today.
"Without the use of our sea
lanes," Vice-Admiral E. R. Main
guy, chief of the naval staff,
said in an interview, "we could
not possibly hope to achieve vic
tory in a war against a strongly
armed and resolute enemy occu
pying a central position!"
Mainguy named Russia as the
"only possible enemy," The Sov

The U-boat successes came
close to, winning both wars for
the Germans. The Nazis were
able to wreak their heavy de
struction with submarines
which today are considered ob
solete. The Germans were the
acknowledged masters of sub
marine warfare and construc
tion. At the end of World War
II, they had in operation three
type . XXI - submarines which
were able to operate under wat
er at 17 knots faster than most
merchant ships travel on the
surface.
Russians Grabbed Plans
Plans for those and even more
advanced submarines fell into
Russian hands. .
The submarine which the Ger
mans hoped would win for them
the last war, but which failed to
get into production, was the
type XXVI. It was the world's
first "true" submersible an un
derwater craft which remains
submerged almost indefinitely.
Some parts of the XXVI had
been manufactured by the war's
end. They, as well as plans for
the vessel, were taken over by
the Russians. The ship, when
completed, would displace 1,160
tons submerged, carry a crew of
32, cruise 7,300 miles without
new fuel, reach the phenomenal
underwater speed of 24 knots,
and submerge more than 600
feet.
In planning anti - submarine
ships, naval experts are aiming
at vessels which could success
fully do battle with another sub
marine or at least on a par with
the German XXVI.

Unusual Happenings

ing nights are traditional in show
business for unusual happenings.
The opening performance of the
Broadway musical "Kiss Me
Kate" at the University of Utah
was no exception.
The fun began for the au
dience near the end of the first
act when the leading man, Jon
Geyans, lifted the leading lady,
Patricia Morison, in his arms
and stumbled to his knees. In a
seemingv effort to get even for
that humiliation, Miss Morison,
at the end of the act, kicked Gey
ans so hard all according to
script, of course that her shoe
flew off.
Next, Duane Hill, one of the
supporting players, sang a song
on top of a box and stamped his
foot too hard. . The box broke.
Trouper that he is, Hill finished
the song with one foot firmly
encased in the box.

ing. Known factors indicate the
combination resulted in moral
strength and spiritual force.
Miss Rosalie Bailey, a fellow
of the American Society of Gen
ealogists, said those character
istics are evident among all of
Eisenhower's forebears.
Many were religious leaders.
Many other were warriors.
Eisenhower's forebears sought
freedom when they came to this
country from Germany. Often,
they were involved in wars and
violence.. . .

ington. Burkhard, a great - great -great
- grandfather of Eisenhow
er, received personal commen
dation from Gen. Washington.
Another Eisenhower forebear,
John Matter, was a private in
Washington's army.
The American Civil War, ac
cording to Miss Bailey, was a
horrible personal experience for
Ida Elizabeth Stover, Eisenhow
er's mother, who lived in Vir
ginia's Shenandoah Valley.
"It convinced her of the wick
edness of war but she believed
that everyone had the right to
his own principles and permitted
her son to follow a military car
eer," Miss Bailey said.
There were farmers and black
smiths among Eisenhower's an
cestors. Nearly all were deeply
religious.
Eisenhower's great - great -grandfather
on his mother's side,
Peter Link, was one of the foun
ders of the Salem Lutheran
church in Virginia's Shenandoah
Valley. Elizabeth Ida Link,- the
mother of Eisenhower's mother,
later received her early relig
ious training there.
On his father's side of the fam
ily, Eisenhower's ancestors fol
lowed the Lutheran religion un
til the middle 1800s. Several
members of the family joined
the Protestant Mennonite sect,
Church of the Brethren, locally
called the River Brethren, or the

dents in the United States, the
head of an engineering firm says.
"Our 22 years experience in
the safety engineering field has
taught us that the driver's frame
of mind is. a primary factor in
most accidents," Lewis Markel,
president of Markel Service, Inc.,
said. The organization is a high
way safety engineering firm and
is the service arm of the Ameri
can Fidelity and Casualty Co.,
Inc., which insures trucks and
buses.
Markel cited examples of bow
his organization has met the
problem. The wives of drivers
for a Texas trucking firm were
made vice presidents in charge
of safety. In Auburn, N.Y.,
