Charles Stafford, head of the
civil defense program in this
area, in a luncheon address Tues
day before the Medford Rotary
club.
Col. Stafford, speaking at the
Hotel Jackson, reminded Rotar
ians that surprise is an import
ant factor in modern warfare;
that there was little advance evi
dence that the Japanese Vere
planning to attack Pearl Harbor.
In Position To Attack
There are indications that
Russia is hi a position to attack,
if they do at all, before the theo
retical ready date of 1954. Un
identified aircraft have been ob
served over U.S. defense areas,
Soviet fishing fleets have ranged
into strategic waters, indications
point to activity on the part of
Russian submarines, and USSR
merchant marine is concentrat
ing in home ports.
The importance of being alert
and prepared in view of these
conditions was stressed by the
civil defense director. Jackson
county has today 11 of 16 plan
ned ground observation posts
in operation, but those on a 12
hour basis. These -posts report
direct to the Portland filter cen
ter the sight of only four engine
aircraft. Two-way radio will
eventually supplant telephone
communications to assure service
in event of bombing or sabotage
of telephone lines.
Demonstrates Methods
Col. Stafford, with the aid of
four simulated "observers" dem
onstrated the method used in
charting the course of aircraft
at the filter station. Ground ob
servation posts are spaced on the
basis of . 10 square mile areas
for efficient charting.
Public cooperation in report

ian defense officials in the' hope
of solving the current saucer

Still Needed for
Footlighter Play
A sample of the talent to be
used in the Footlighter's Sum
mer show, "Only an Orphan
Girl" was presented in the pro
gram of the organization meet
ing held! at the Fairground
Theater last night. Miss Ruth
Kilbourn, newly elected presi
dent of the group presided.
Nostalgic songs by The Three
Notes and Dad, rustic panto
mine dancing by Danny and
Geneva Neill and a flirtatious
reading by Noreen Kelly,' who
plays the siren in the forthcom
ing melodrama, formed the
sample program.
Dancer Needed
That a good soft shoe dance
number is still needed for the
olio acts to be used in connec
tion with the show was announc
ed by Miss Kilbourn, who said
the show is "still wide open"
as far as special numbers are
concerned. "
Miss Kilbourn also stressed a
need for quantities of costumes
of the 1890 period. A particular
necessity is a bona fide frock
coat for the villain. Gibson Girl
blouses, skirts, bustles, a man's
mackinaw and numerous other
costume pieces will be much-ap
preciated. Anyone wishing to
loan or contribute costumes for
the production may bring them
to the Footlighter Theater at the
fairgrounds or call Mrs. Earl

too," Mjss Murdoch said during
a brief stopover in New York
City. . She works an average of
one day. out of three.
Her trip is the New York to
Johannesburg run. It begins .t
the New York airfield, two hours
before takeoff time. A few hours
later there's a. short stop at
Gander, Newfoundland, then the
flight' across the Atlantic either
to Santa Maria in the Azores or
Lisbon. She loves Lisbon.
Lisbon means brunch in. bed,
sightseeing tours and shopping,
a late dinner at the hotel or
some native restaurant and danc
ing at one of a number of fine
clubs.
' At Johannesburg, it's glamor
ous living again. Brunch in bed,
a visit to the American consul's
home for lunch, a drive to the
gold mines, or a safari through
a wild life sanctuary.
Meets Celebrities
With variation dictated by lo
cale, that's more or less the life
of an' airline stewardess as Miss
Murdoch knows it.
There's a celebrity aboard on
nearly every flight. She's heard
Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt explain
the workings of the United Na
tions assembly as she sipped a
cup of tea high in the sky. She
knows the plot of Ray Milland's
next picture; he told it to her
himself.
.Miss Murdoch never has en
countered anything more alarm
ing than an electrical storm in
her thousands of hours in the
air, but she says she always has
to be prepared for the unex
pected. Movie stars sometimes mis
place false eyelashes, and diplo
mats have been known to lose
suspender buttons.
