Science in oil drilling Is rapidly replacing the
witching wand and hunch. Soon we may forget
what a "wildcat" ever was. If you want to guess
and dig you have one chance in 30 (at a cost of
about $100,000 per well) to strike oil.
If, however, geological research says "drill here'
you have one chance in 10. With geophysical help,
they go up to one chance in 6, and with both
geology and 'geophysics,, they become one in 5.
Last year the oil industry invested more than $325
million in geophysical exploration all over the
world. This was only 10 of the total cost of
all oil exploration.
Is there more oil to be found, even with scientific
research? Since the first gusher came in, the
world has used up to 70' billion barrels of oil.
Another 80 to 100 billion barrels lie in "proven
reserves" which are now being tapped. Still to be
discovered: at least 600 billion barrels about 4
times all the oil we have so far used or know
about.
At the rate we are now finding oil reserves (a bil
lion barrels a year, we can keep looking for at
least another 100 years.
