Sandwiches Picnic Fashion
Celebrate "August is sandwich
time" picnic fashion with the
favorite sandwiches pictured
here. Sandwiches are so easy to
make you can organize an out
ing in a jiffy.
Picnic time fs fun time! Keep
food preparation to a minimum.
You can quickly make up ham
and cheese sandwiches. Every
one likes them. Or, you might
even take the "fixings" along
and let each one make his special
favorite.
Potato salad is a high ranking
escort for sandwiches. On hurry
up occasions buy a big bag of
potato chips. Make a big thermos
jug of lemonade and take along
a sack of fresh fruit. Your menu
is complete!
Ham and cheese make ideal
fillings for sandwiches because
they travel well. Other good pre
made sandwiches include all of
the luncheon meats and sausages,
roast beef, sliced chicken, tongue,
and corned beef.
If you want your sandwich to
take on "Dagwood" proportions,
take along picalilli, mustard, to
matoes, lettuce leaves, chili sauce,
and salad dressing.
There are many other delicious
sandwich fillings which are at
their best when made at the pic
nic site. Choose from the wide
variety of cheese and meat
spreads available in jars. Take
along a can of sardines and hard
cooked eggs for "make-your-
own" specialties. Another good
one is made by mixing cream
cheese with crushed crisp bacon,
chipped beef or crushed fruits.
If you have a camp stove, or
facilities for making a fire,
you'll probably want to take
along frankfurters and long
buns. Other "best sellers" are
the mighty hamburger and the
luxury steak. Perhaps you
haven't ever made toasted cheese
sandwiches sandwiches over a
fire. You'll like them. Heat pork
and beans, too, over the fire and
make bean sandwiches with Bos'
ton brown bread. Bacon is
especially good with this.
Add variety to picnic sand
wiches by using different breads.
Of course enriched white bread
is most popular. But you will
really enjoy occasionally, whole
wheat, rye, pumpernickel, raisin
and cinnamon breads. Fruit and
nut breads are especially good
with cheese spreads.
Gasoline Sales
In Oregon Show
Drop During June
Salem (U.PJGasoline sales
in Oregon were lower in June
this year than they were in
June, 1951, according to Secre
tary of State Earl T. Newbry.
Sales totaled 51,007,747 gal
lons, more than 800,000 gallons
below the sales figure for June,
1951.
Despite the drop, Newbry said
consumption was high enough to
keep mileage wll above any
other month of this year. Motor
ists rolled more than 600,000,000
miles, a high for 1952, and in so
doing, managed to kill nearly
seven persons for each 100,000,
000 miles of travel.
Ties February Rate
The actual mileage death rate,
6.8 tied with the February rate
to make them the two worst traffic-killing
months, mile for mile,
for the year to date. June traffic
deaths numbered 41.
Officials were puzzled over
the drop in gasoline sales in
June. That month generally
brings in a heavy influx of tour
ist travel, resulting in large gas
oline sales and mileage increases.
Salem (U.R) Oregon's rev
enue from the state gasoline tax
the first six months of 1952 was
more than $400,000 higher than
for the same period last year.
Secretary of State Earl T. New
bry said that the tax collections
showed increases every month
of the period except in June
when they dropped off $52,194.
Newbry said he was unable to
explain that slump since large
numbers of tourists were report
ed in the state in June.
Fuel tax revenues for the first
half of the year aggregated $15,
672,303 compared with $15,252,-
587 the first half of 1951.

Beat egg in bowl large enough
to hold all ingredients. Beat in
sugar gradually; stir in remain
ing ingredients. Take up round
ing teaspoonfuls of the mixture
and push onto well-greased bak
ing sheet at least 2 inches apart.
Spread into flat ' discs with a
knife which has been dipped in
to cold water. Bake on top shelf

flour

2V2 cups corn flakes
Cream together butter, sugar,
egg yolks, and vanilla until light
and fluffy. Sift together flour
and baking powder and add to
first mixture with coconut. Add
cereal flakes. Beat egg whites
stiff, then fold in. Drop by tea-
spoonfuls on lightly greased
cooky sheet; flatten slightly with
spoon. Bake in moderate oven
(350 F.) 10 to 12 minutes. Yield:
3 dozen cookies.

No Cause for Alarm
Seen in Hog Disease
Salem (U.R) State Direc
tor of Agriculture E. L. Peter
son said Saturday there was no
present cause for alarm in Ore
gon over the hog disease preval
ent in some parts of the country.
The disease, known as vesic
ular exanthema, is similar to
foot-and-mouth disease in cattle,
but Peterson said outbreaks so
far uncovered in Oregon def
initely were not foot-and-mouth
disease. Only outbreaks of vesi
cular exanthema discovered in
Oregon were in Marion and
Multnomah counties.

Peterson gave his reassuran
ces to producers, seller and con
sumers after Gov. Douglas Mc
Kay received a telegram from
Gov. Val Peterson of Nebraska
urging Oregon's governor to join
in pressing Secretary of Agricul
ture Charles F. Brannan for im
mediate federal action on a
indemnifying hog growers for
losses suffered as result of the

turned over to the state agricul
ture department for study.
The state agriculture director
said there had been eight out
breaks of the disease in Oregon.
In all but two cases all signs, of
the disease have been eliminated
effectively, he said.
Two Cases in Portland
The two cases are in a herd
of some 400 to 500 hogs owned
by the B & B garbage feeding
plant near Portland and a ship
ment of swine from South Da
kota now under lock and key in
the North Portland stockyards.
Peterson said he had instruct
ed the department's attorney to
draft an order for immediate
slaughter of these hogs. He said
it was possible to salvage meat;
from infected hogs for processed
meats, such as hams and bacon.'
