revision is available.
The new alphabet was de
veloped by the International

Erupting Volcano in Hawaii
Means Bonanza to Populace
Hilo, Hawaii (U.R) An
erupting volcano usually means
death, destructon of homes and
farmlands, refugees, fear and
panic.
That is not so with Hawaii's
latest eruption of Mount Kilauea
about 30 miles from here. It has
meant a bonanza.
Nobody has been running
away from Kilauea since Hale
maumau fire pit cracked across
the middle June 27 and sent
flaming lava gushing 700 feet
into the air. Instead, people have
been running toward the 750-foot-deep
hole which came to
life after an 18-year sleep.
Halemaumau is hardly more
dangerous than a fire in a bar
becue pit. It is what is known as
a "captive" volcano. The pit in
side Kilauea crater is 3,100 feet
in daimeter at its narrowest
point and about 750 feet deep.
The lava has been rising about
10 feet a day.
A fountain in the southwest
corner has been gushing lava
about 200 feet into the air.
There is only the most remote
possibility that the action will
continue long enough to cause
the pit to overflow.
Room for Expansion
Even it it did, it would have
to fill the deep, two-and-a-half-mile
wide Kilauea crater before
it could overflow into the val
leys below.
The eruption has brought Ha
waii Island the biggest tourist
boom it has seen in a long time.
From the moment the orange
glare appeared on the skyline
and ths word spread around
that Kilauea had erupted, the
highways and skyways have
been jammed with island resi
dents and visitors who couldn't
wait to see a sample of nature's
most spectacular show.
The broad, smooth highways
to the crater were lined with
cars almost immediately. With
in a few hours after the erup
tion, one local airline announced
special flights from Honolulu.
Another followed suit.
Both air carriers are going
all-out in promoting the spec
tacle. One has been putting out
twice-daily news releases on the
progress of the eruption. Hotels,
taxi cabs, bus lines and U-drive
auto companies on the Island of
Civil Aeronautics Administra
tion ground stations April 1.
ICAO urged its adoption by
member nations.

Loan Company Cashes In
A Honolulu loan company
even got in on the act. It is car
rying on an advertising cam
paign, urging people who don't
have ready cash to borrow
money so they can see the show
while it lasts.
Of all those to whom Kilau
ea's new activity has brought
business, none is happier than
venerable 92-year-old "Uncle
George" Lycurgus. owner of the
Volcano House, a resort which
sits on the rim of Kilauea crater.
Uncle George had a good, steady
business up to 1924 when Kil
auea was in constant flow. His
business was sporadic for the
next 10 years, during which
Kilauea erupted nine times.
It has been pretty tough going
for Uncle George's Volcano
House during the past 18 years.
Hardly anyone wanted to stay
overnight just to look down a
big, deep, grey hole with a few
lava cones on the bottom.
Crowds Com
Lycurgus had been hoping,
and predicting, for 18 years that
Madame Pele (ancient Hawaiian
fire goddess who is said to visit
volcanoes before they erupt)
would visit Kilauea once again.
Within 48 hours after the
eruption, Kilauea attracted an
estimated 15.000 spectators and
the Volcano House, which ac
commodates only 67 guests, was
flooded with reservation re
quests. Uncle George is still
turning people away by the
scores.
The only fear Islanders have
of Halemaumau is that she will
quit erupting.
While Army medical therapy
has been successful in supress
ing many primary attacks, some
veterans returning from Korea
may develop malaria as much
as 300 days after infection by
mosquitoes in the battle zone.
