and what grown-up hasn't made
twice as much
noise com
plaining about
the racket
from same?
Well, t h e
harmonica is
being honored
this summer
as the south
German town
of Trossingen
Harmon Nichols observes its
500th anniversary. This little
news item sent me in search of
information on the history of
this old-time melody-maker.
I found files at the Library
of Congress and at the National
Geographic Society.
The harmonica is being honor
ed in Germany mostly because
Trossingen, in the French-zone
of Wurtemberg - Hohenzollern,
owes a lot to the instrument.
One of the world's best-known
and biggest makers of mouth or
gans has a shop there, and the
factory provides work for much
of the town's population.
Invented in Berlin
Actually the mouth harmonica
is much younger than Trossingen
itself. It was invented in Berlin
in 1921 by Friedrich Buschmann.
It employes an old oriental sys
tem of making music by passing
air over "free" reeds vibrat
ing reeds that exactly fit the
wind aperture.
Buschmann called his inven
tion the Mundharmonika.
But there were oriental mouth
organs long before the German
got to his inventing. Japanese
and Chinese models were made
with a gourd, or a gourd-shaped
piece of carved wood. This serv
ed as an airpocket.
Thirteen or more slender
canes were inserted into this
windchest, and each cane pro
duced a note from a different
free reed. Some of the Chinese
organs used bamboo pipes or
canes that are 14 feet long.
The oriental mouth organs, of
course, can be toted by one man
but certainlly they connot be
stuffed into the pocket like the
German and American models.
Many a kid and a lot of old
timers, like this one, can testi
fy that a pocket is a handy
thing to hide a mouth organ
from a snoopy teacher.
The German and American
models vary from toys capable
of playing on only one key to
large chromatic harmonicas that
can play anything frm the class
ic to boogie, eight to the bar.
Technical Name
Technically, the instrument
generally called the harmonica
is a mouth harmonica or mouth
organ, but musical dictionaries
differentiate between the mouth
harmonica and the harmonica.
The harmonica is an instru
ment invented by Benjamin
Franklin and by no means re
sembles a mouth organ.

posed by Bach for other in
struments. Series of Bells
The Franklin harmonica con
sisted of a series of graduated
glass bells, or bowls. These were
nested into one another and
mounted on a central shaft. The
shaft and the bowls were turn
ed by means of a foot pedal with
the bowls immersed in a reser
voir of water. As the bowls
turned on the shaft, out came
music by placing the fingers
on their wet, revolving edges.

Grain Products
Exports Increase
Over Last Year
Washington (U.R) The Unit
ed States exported 664.000,000
bushels of grain and grain prod
ucts in the year ended July 1,
the Department of Agriculture
has reported.
This was 53,000,000 bushels
more than the same period last
year. The total includes 470,191,
000 busels of wheat, flour and
macaroni and 194,222,000 bush
els of other grains and prod
uctscorn, oats, grain sorghums,
barley, rye, corn grits, hominy
and meal, corn starch and flour,
oat meal, and malt.
The 1951-52 export totals com
pare with 363,823,000 bushels of
wheat, flour and macaroni ex
ported in the 1950-51 season and
247,391,000 bushels of other
grain and products.
The department said 50 per
cent of the grain exports went
to European countries, 32 per
cent to the Far East, principally
India and Japan, and ll per cent
went to Central and South
America.
ATOMIC COMMITTEE HEAD

Stockmen Association
Favors Auditorium
The Jackson County Stock
men's association board of di
rectors has gone on record as
favoring a civic auditorium at
Medford supported on a county
wide basis, W. B. Tucker, secre
tary of the group said yesterday.
The group expressed its belief
that the proposed auditorium
"would be of mutual benefit to
all organizations in the county
who have at least one or more
occasions to use such facilities
each year," Tucker added. The
group also made a donation to
help pay for the expenses of the
building campaign.
Contest Planned
The agricultural committee of
the Jackson County Chamber of
Commerce also met with the
stockmen directors and made
final plans for the coming Grass
man of the Year contest. The
combined group decided to
change the date for the end of
the contest to August 15, with
the judging on August 18. This
move was made, Tucker related,
to allow a sizeable number of
entrants to be made from all
areas of the county.
The same judges as last year
were approved for the contest.
They are James Lennie, grazing
supervisor, bureau of land man
agement: M. L. Tedrow, assist
ant supervisor, Rogue River Na
tional forest; and E. C. Fergu
son. managing editor, The Mail
Tribune.
Money Donated
The group acknowledged the
receipt of the $100 prize money
donated by the Rogue Valley
Farm Implement Dealers asso
ciation, which will be broken up
into a $75 first prize and $25
second.
Another contest was planned
at the meeting. This was the se
lection of the "Cattleman of the
Year." This will take place be
tween now and May, 1953, when
the state contest is held, Tucker
pointed out.
Two trophies will be awarded
for the outstanding cattleman in
the state. They are donated by
Herman Oliver, w e 1 1-known
stockman from John Day, Ore.
One is the perpetual trophy
which rotates each year, and
the other is the individual one
which the recipient can keep.
Tucker noted that the contest
will be arranged differently this
year with the state divided into
districts. Jackson county will be
included in a district with Jose
phine and Douglas counties.
Judging of the stockmen will be
on three points, public relations,
stock operations and land im
provement, such as grass and
erosion development.
Groups May Entsr
Cattlemen need not enter the
contest in person, the secretary
pointed out, as any group or as
sociation can submit a name

20 year sentence at Oregon state
prison for assault with intent
to kill.
The turkey raiser was convict
ed Tuesday by a Yamhill county
circuit court jury of attempting
to kill his wife when he wound
ed her with a shotgun blast at
their farm home June 8.

er immediately imposed the sen
tence, stiffest he could give un
der the law.
Mrs. Smith lost part of her
left arm as result of the wound.
