PARENTS DESERVE
HAPPINESS IN THEIR
DECLINING YEARS
When parents are coming to
the end of their lives, their hap
piness should be their children's
first consideration. This may
mean sacrifices for their chil
dren but the sacrifices are usual
ly far less than the parents
made for them. That is the way
this young woman should look
at the problem she writes about:
(Q) "My parents are gelling
long in years. Dad has a
mall pension but it is not
enough lo keep Ihejn in their
home. My two brothers and I
are all married with families
of our own. We feel that we
have enough lo do lo keep our
own families and can't help
our parents. We think they
should sell lhe house and live
in quarters they can afford i
but lhey want lo slay in their
own home. What do you ad
vise us lo do?"
(A) You and your brothers
should make it possible for your
parents to stay in their own
home until their health is such
that they can
not live there
alone. After
all they have
done for you
and v o u r
brothers, the
least you can
do is to try to
make their old
age as happy
as possible.
There are
you and your

brothers can do that will help
your parents but will not be too
great a financial burden to you.
If their home is large enough to
accommodate one or two room
ers, perhaps you could locate a
congenial elderly person or a
young business man or woman
who could live in their spare
rooms. If they granted their
roomers kitchen privileges, or if
your mother were willing to
prepare one or two meals a day
for them that would bring in a
tidy sum for them.
You and your brothers, if you
have young children, could have
your parents stay in your 1 1 mes
occasionally while you went out
Or went away for a short vaca
tion. Instead of paying someone
else to baby-sit, you could give
the money to your parents.
Domestic Job Suggested
'' Another source of income for
them would be if you could get
some mending, cookie or cake
making job for your mother.
Most women of her generation
are skilled in domestic arts and
there is a great demand for such
things today. This would be
work, she would enjoy and it
would not overtax her strength.
It would give her the feeling of
independence that always pleas
es an elderly person.

Pork Prices Get
Higher Ceilings
Portland (U.R) From now
on it will cost more to eat pork,
according to District OPS Di
rector Carl C. Donaugh.
Higher OPS ceiling prices of
from one to eight cents a pound
on lean pork cuts became effec
tive Tuesday. The ceilings were
authorized until October 31.
The higher ceilings. Donaugh
said, are required by the defense
production act, which provides
for higher OPS ceilines to re
flect seasonally adjusted parity I
The biggest advance, efght
cents, will be on pork loins, the
ssurce of chops and loin roasts,
and on spareribs. Hams, bellies.
Boston butts, and neckbones will
be boosted three cents, and
shoulders will be raised one cent.
Parts on' which ceilings were
not raised include the parts of
the carcass usually used in mak
ing sausage, Donaugh said.
