armed with a sub machinegun
and two revolvers held up a
Bank of America branch Satur
day and escaped with $20,000
cash after apparently hiding in
the bank overnight.
"We don't want to hurt any
one here. We just want the mon
ey," onff of the hooded gunmen
told frightened employees at the
South Hoover street bank.
Police, who called the rob
bery this city's first machinegun
holdup since 1921, said the band
its were hiding in the bank when
employees arrived for work and
didn't reveal themselves until
after the bank vault was open
ed. The robbers then herded em
ployees into a back room as they
entered the bank for work, and
forced officials to hand over the
currency.
WANTED TOO MUCH

when thieves broke into his
store and took two outboard mo
tors, various rods and fishing
reels. He was really annoyed the
next night when the burglars re
turned and took $80 from the
cash drawer to finance their
fishing expedition.

Klamath Writer Tells
Of FBI Net Closing
On Park Murderers

for the murderers of two men
who were killed in cold blood
in Crater Lake National park
a week ago is centering in
Klamath Falls under the direc
tion of agents of the Federal
Bureau of 'Investigation. The
Klamath Falls Herald and
News has been designated as
news agency in the case by the
FBI. The following story, was
written by Herald and News

Somewhere in an ever-tightening
FBI net today was the mur
derous robber who last Saturday
shot two men to death in Crater
Lake National Park.
No one knows who or where
the killer is but some web of the
FBI snare may flush at least a
suspect at any minute now.
There was nothing in the re
port from FBI headquarters to
day to point a possibility of a
break in the case soon. J. B.
Poster, chief of the FBI bureau
in Portland, told the Herald and
News simply: "We are progress
ing by elimination."
Electric
But to this reporter, there
seemed to be an electric air of
expectancy today. Said one of
the federal agents here: "I hope
you've got a good hunch." And
then he smiled and turned back
to the job at hand; minutes are
precious to the government
agents when killers are at large.
Since two General Motors of
ficials were robbed and slain in
the national park last Saturday,
a sizable squad of crack federal
agents have worked top speed
to break the case.

tal daylight murders were C. P.
Culhane, Detroit, Mich., and A.
M. Jones, Concord, Calif.
Interest
Old timers say that few crimes
in .huamatn history nave so
stirred the citizenry. Since the
victims' bodies were found Mon
day afternoon interest in the
case has been extremely high,
And most remarks have been
fired with blazing anger at the
wanton cruelty of the killer.
Although the case is being
handled by the FBI, all other law
enforcement agencies have taken
an active interest. Yesterday the
writer went to the scene of the
crime with a party including
Circuit Judge David Vanden
berg, Sheriff Murray (Red) Brit-
ton and ex-Sheriff Lloyd Low,

one-quarter of a mile back in the
woods from the park's South
entrance highway.'
Theories
Typical of other visitors to the
scene, Vandenberg, Britton and
Low theorized on how the crime
was actually committed as they
stepped gingerly about the tragic
area. To aid them in making
their deductions, the writer as
sumed ' prone positions on the
exact spots the murdered men's
bodies were discovered.
If and when the case comes to
trial, it will be in federal court
"I wouldn't be here if I were
going' to try the case," remarked
Circuit Judge Vandenberg at the
crime scene yesterday.
Mt. Lassen National Park,
Calif. The wife of a park
ranger, Mrs. Ruthie Simms
Murray, 45, Friday confessedshe
murdered her husband, whose
bodv was found Tuesday. Her
husband, Carlton G. Murray,
navy veteran, was a seasonal
ranger at the park. His body was
found in a ranger station in the
south part of the park, shot with
a small caliber gun.

B-36 Bomber Set

By Speedier Jets
Washington (U.R) The
B-36 bomber, the mainstay of
the Air Force's intercontinental
bombing power, is headed for
the hangar, to be replaced by
speedier jet bombers.
Air Force Undersecretary Ros
well L. Gilpatric announced in
a statement Friday . night that
the Air Force has ordered the
last of the B-36's. The heavy
bombers already ordered will be
completed, sometime in 1954.
The B-36, first designed in
World War II, is powered by six
conventional type radial engines
and four jet pods, giving it a
speed of more than 435 miles
an hour. It can carry a 10,000
pound bomb load, including the
atomic bomb, for a range of 10,
000 miles. 1
Successor to the B-36 will be
the B-52 Stratofortress, an all
jet bomber with a speed of more
than 600 miles an hour and a
range and bomb load almost
equal to the B-36's.
First models of the B-52 are
now undergoing flight tests. The
decision to stop B-36 production
in 1954 is evidently based on
the fact that the B-52 will be
going into combat units then.
