Apprentice Council
To Aid in Draft
Deferment Bids
State-wide facilities of the
Oregon Apprenticeship council
have been made available to
sponsors of apprentice programs
wishing to certify their pro
grams under a recent presiden
tial order authorizing deferment
of certain apprentices from se
lective service.
The purpose of this order Is to
maintain and Increase the ranks
of skilled workers for the de
fense program and to help main
tain a sound civilian aconomy.

Requests for deferment must,
be made to the Oregon director;
of selective service.
To be eligible for deferment,
the apprentice program must
have been in operation at least
one. year, there must be at least
one apprentice continuously em
ployed during this time in each
occupation for which request is
made and the occupations must
conform to government specifi
cations and requirements.
Throngs Attracted
To Oregon Parks
Salem U.R) Oregon's state
parks are attracting throngs of
overnight campers this summer,
the parks division of the State
Highway Department has re
portecL More than 3600 campers regis
tered in the overnight camping
grounds during June.
A favorite spot with campers
Is Silver Falls park, near Silver
ton, where 181 persons have
stayed overnight so far this
month, the parks division said.
Also popular are Armitage State
park on the McKenzie river in
Lane county and Emigrant
Springs park in Union county.
First National Bank
Dividends Declared
Portland Directors of the
First National Bank of Portland
at their regular monthly meet
ing last week declared a divi
dend of $960,000, it was an
nounced by F. N. Belgrano, Jr.,
president.
The dividend constitutes 80
cents per share on the 1,200,000
outstanding shares of the bank.
It is payable at two periods, 40
cents a share Oct. 1, 1952, to
shareholders of record at the
close of business Sept. 18, 1952,
and 40 cents a share payable
Jan 1, 1953. to shareholders of
record at the close of business
Dec. 20, 1952.
