Judy Simpson, Nine,
Gets Radio License
Martha Ruth (Judy) Simpson,
nine-year-old daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. L. L. Simpson, 801 King
street. Saturday received a li
cense as a radiotelephone (re
stricted) operator. She is thought
to be one of the youngest, if not
the youngest, licensed radio op
erators in the nation.
Judy, whose ninth birthday
was only a few days ago, was
licensed so she can help her
mother and father, and her older
brother, Ferris, monitor and op
erate the radio-telephone net
work of the Southern Oregon
Conservation and Tree Farm as
sociation, of which her father is
secretary-manager. The radio
network has its major land sta
tion in Simpson's downtown
office, but a remote control sta
tion is located in the Simpson's
residence, to offer 24-hour serv
ice. Ferris, who received his li
cense when he was 11 years old,
at that time was thought to be
the youngest such operator, but
Judy has now topped his record. 1

We like -to deceive ourselves
that we are as young and fit at
fifty, let us say, as we were at
thirty-five. But the truth is that
! most of us begin to decline, de
generate or die at thirty-five or
thereabouts.
YOUTH, OLD AGE AND LIME
Up to date textbooks of phy
siology describe the functions of
calcium (lime) as follows:
1. Essential for
ossificatio n
of bone and
the enamel
of the teeth,
and for de
velopment of
sound and
regular o r
even teeth.

citability of
nerves,
vigorous con-

4. Necessary for clotting of
blood.
5. Controls permeability of cap
illaries. How come so many Americans
are susceptible to or subject to
these familiar complaints which,
as I believe, are the manifesta
tions of calcium deficiency?
The answer is as simple as
rolling off a log. Most Amer
icans, especially growing chil
dren and adolescents, do not
consume enough milk whole
milk, skim milk, separator milk,
dry whole milk powder or skim
milk powder, buttermilk, sour
milk, Bulgarian milk, Acidophi
lus milk, yoghurt, clabbered or
curdled milk, whey, cottage
cheese and every other kind of
cheese. Milk and milk products
constitute the best food source of
calcium, to say nothing of other
essentials of good nutrition. The
minimum daily requirement of
milk, or its equivalent in the
milk products mentioned, for
man, woman or growing child,
is IVi pints, three glasses, if the
individual is to enjoy good nu
trition and good health.
From time to time, in the past
ten years, now this, and now
that "scientific investigator" or
"laboratory expert" has discov
ered that "too much" vitamin D
may cause deposits of calcium in
various tissues and organs, the
blood vessels, the kidneys, the
lungs, for example.
Actual instances of such hap
pening in human beings, sub
stantiated by qualified medical
examination, are so rare that
one questions the motive for all
the hullabaloo. There is no case
on record in which any serious
untoward effect has been pro
duced by feeding infant or adult
less than 5000 units of vitamin
D daily over an indefinite per
iod of time.
In advanced senility deposits
of calcium (lime) in the walls of
the arteries are commonly
found. Whatever the old timers
thought about this, no one today
ascribes the hardening of the
arteries (arteriosclerosis) of old
age to this calcification. Physi
cians and pathologists today re
gard it as a consequence of de
generation of the arterial wall
nature being no longer able
to replace damaged or dead cells
with new cells lays down fib
rous, scar, non-functioning tis
sue or deposits calcium salts to
repair the damage.
The degeneration of the arter
ial wall is part and parcel of pre
mature aging, growing old, de
cline, dying. Everybody's doing
it. In the natural course of life
we are born, we grow and de
velop until we reach the peak,
