fans of the tattered Tigers to
cheer about this season, but they
were hailing wailopin Walt
Dropo today as a worthy succes
sor to hammerin' Hank Green
berg. Since Dropo, the big moose
from Moosup, Conn., electrified
the baseball world by cracking
out 12 straight hits to tie an all
time major league record
against the Yankees and Sena
tors on July 14 and 15, he has
kept banging away and has
boosted his average to .300 from
a puny .265. He now is tied for
the league lead In runs batted
in with 63, and Thursday he
won another ball game with a
two-run homer, his 16th, which
beat the Senators 4 to 2.

ington from gaining ground on
the Yankees, who lost 4 to 2 to
the fourth-place Indians. Cleve

Tobins victory over Dr. Palm
rose Thursday was the big upset
of the tournament. The Portland
golfer nosed out the Astorian 1
up. Dr. Palmrose' bogeyed on the
last hole as Tobin came out of
the rough for a par four.

Said 'Good to Excellent'

ing has improved generally
throughout Oregon during the
past week and week-end angling
prospects are good in most major
streams and lakes, according to
the Oregon State Game Com
mission.
The weekly report:
Southwest: Trout fishing in up
per Rogue river is good to ex
cellent, but fair to poor in Grants
Pass area. Fishing at Winchester
bay is good provided weather
conditions are satisfactory for
crossing the bar.
Trout fishing in the coastal
lakes is fair. Good catches of
trout are being made in the north
Umpqua river from Winchester
to Eagle rock and in the south
Umpqua from Milo to Camp
Comfort. Some salmon trout are
being taken in the vicinity of
Umpqua and the forks.
Summer steelhead fishing is
good at Steamboat, but only a
few have been caught at Win
chester. Conditions are very good
with moderately low level clear

Giants defeated the Cardinals
for the second time in a row, 9
to 5. and the Braves edged the
Cubs. 3 to 1. The Phillies and
Pirates had an open date.
Ashland Golf
Tournament Set
Ashland Qualifying for the
Ashland city golf tournament
starts tomorrow and runs
through Thursday, July 31, spon
sors of the event reported today
Qualifying will be over 18 holes
with matches slated to get under
way August 1, 2 and 3.
Among Medford golfers who
are contemplating entering the
second annual Ashland tourney
are George Harrington and Ed
die Simmons, two of the state's
leading amateur shot makers.
Another leading Oregon golfer,
Dom Provost Jr., Ashland, the
defending champion, is expected
to take part in the tournament.
All entries must be submitted
to the Ashland clubhouse by
Wednesday, July 30. Persons in
terested in entering the tourney
may do so by calling the club
house or by mailing in entry
cards, which can be obtained in
Medford at the Rogue Valley
Country club pro shop.

Blue lake is good on troll and
fly fishing in the evening con

lakes are picking up on trolling
and bait. Crane Prairie has been
good on trolling and worms.
Metolius river fly fishing is
good. Upper Deschutes is still
producing , some very nice
catches. Mid-Deschutes is at its
best. Few steelhead are reported
taken in the Maupin area on the
Deschutes. .
Odell lake continues 1 to pro
duce the big ones with 16 Mack
inaw taken this week from HVi
to 21 pounds. Trout fishing is
also good in Odell. Crescent lake
is good on trolling. Summit lake
is also good. Little Deschutes
and Crescent creek are fair. Elk
lake is good and Davis lake is
fair.

pionships rolled into the quarter-finals.

artist gained a berth in the
round of 16 Thursday by brush

Valley, Calif., 6-2, 6-0. It was his
third triumph of the tourney.

Verne Collins Hurls No-Hitter
Softball Victory;
Verne Collins pitched a no-hit,
no-run game last night to lead
Central Point to an 8 to 0 victory
over Eagle Point in the Medford
Softball league. Collins was rob
bed of a perfect game when he
walked Mosby, the second man
up in the first inning. Mosby,
the only Eagle Pointer to reach
base in the five inning affair,
died on first base. Collins struck
out eight of the J 6 batters to face
him and not a ball was hit out
of the infield. In the second in
ning Collins retired the side via
the strikeout route.
Central Point went to work in
earnest in their half of the first
inning, collecting six runs on
five hits, an error, a walk and

in the third
Central Point went to work

first inning, collecting six runs
on five hits, an error, a walk
and a fielder's choice. They ad
ded another run in the second
and one in the third.
Andy's Jewelry chalked up an
11 to 3 victory over the Crater
Lions in the other half of the
double header. Ted Landers, on
the mound for Andy's, kept four
hits well scattered, giving up one
in each of the first two frames
and allowing two in the fourth.
His teammates collected nine
safeties off the offerings of Mor
ris. Already leading 5 to 3 when
the final inning started, Andy's
pushed across six runs to put the
game on ice.
