Rebellious Southerners Seated
Without Taking Loyalty Pledge
Chicago (U.R) Three rebel
lious Southern states won the
right to vote in the Democratic
Convention Friday without sign
ing a "loyalty" pledge which
they refused to swallow at the
risk of being thrown out of the
party.
The action apparently ended
the possibility of a convention
bolt by anti-Truman Southern
ers who had threatened to shat
ter Democratic unity in the face
of an anticipated Dixie invasion
by GOP nominee Dwight D.
Eisenhower.
Long Floor Fight
The South Carolina, Virginia
and Louisiana delegations were
restored to full membership by
vote of the convention after a
blistering floor fight which
raged into the early hours of
the morning.
Harmony-seeking middle-of-the
road Democrats lined up be
hind the three hold-out states to
hand the liberal wing of the
party a sound thrashing. Back
ers of Averell Harriman and
Sen. Estes Kefauver, D-Tenn..
angrily charged that sponsors of
the Stevenson draft "made a
deal with the Dixiecrats."
Verval Assurances Given
Standing solidly on their re
fusal to sign even a watered
down "loyalty" pledge engineer
ed by Northern liberals, the
three stetes were seated after
giving verbal assurances that
the party nominees to be named
today would appear on the bal
lot in their states in November.,
Bold threats of a new South
ern uprising have been voiced
by Govs. James F. Byrnes of
South Carolina, Herman Tal
madge of Georgia and Hugh
White of Mississippi, all bitter
foes of federal civil rights and
other cardinal features of the
Fair Deal.
The Southerners, most of
Court Advisory Group
Sets Monday Meeting
The Jackson County Juvenile
court advisory committee is
scheduled to meet Monday eve
ning, July 28, at 8 o'clock in the
circuit court rooms of the court
house, it was announced today.
The advisory committee is
composed o f representatives
from civic and fraternal organi
zations in the county, and each
group is requested to send a
delegate to the meeting, accord
ing to Mrs. Victor Birdseye,
chairman of the committee.
Anyone interested is invited to
attend, she added.
The meeting is to include a
report of the nominating com
mittee, a report from the juve
nile officer procurement com
mittee and action on the recent
survey of detention facilities.
3 Trucks Crash,
Block Junction
Traffic was partially tied up
for a considerable period last
night when three trucks were
involved in an accident at the
intersection of Highways 99 and
62 north of Medford, the state
police reported.
In the accident were a pickup
truck driven by Sidney Jones,
324 South Central avenue, a
logging truck driven by Law
rence Darrell South. Central
Point, and a truck d,r'ven by
John Wesley Eads, 722 Broad
street. Jones' pickup was badly
smashed, but there were no in
juries and no citations issued,
the police said.
Eads was driving north on
Highway 99 when the traffic
light changed and his brakes
failed. His truck, owned by
Johnny's Signs, Central Point,
sideswiped the south-bound log
ging truck, causing it to swerve
into the pickup, police said.
Jones was stopped on Highway
62, waiting for the traffic signal
to change.
There were two passengers in
Jones' truck Delbert Boyd,
Biddle road, and Janet Prowell,
1468 South Columbus avenue.

Showdown Forced
Governors of the three states
Byrnes, Robert F. Kennon of
Louisiana and John Battle of
Virginia forced a showdown
Thursday. They sent a joint let
ter to Convention Chairman
Sam Rayburn asking if "we are,
or are not, members of the. con
vention." The test came when Louis
iana's name came up in the roll
call for presidential nomina
tions. Battle, amid boos, formal
ly asked for a ruling. With great
reluctance. Rayburn, a Texan,
said the three states could not
vote because they had not com
plied with the loyalty require
ment. Based on Statement
Rep. Lansdale G. Sasscer, D
Ivld., asked that Virginia be
seated on the basis of a state
ment by Battle that Virginia law
required the Democratic nomin
ees to be placed on the ballot.
In a noisy, two-hour roll call,
Virginia was seated by a vote of
615 to 529 after a number of
states, including Illinois, switch
ed enough votes to assure vic
tory for the Virginians.
A short time later, Battle mov
ed that Louisiana and South
Carolina be seated. Rep. John
McCormack, D-Mass., who had
taken the chair, put the motion
to a voice vote and declared it
passed.
Lower Bartlett Price
Believed in Prospect
Prospects are that Bartlett
near prices will be lower this
year than last, it was reported
by the Portland Oregonian to
day after it received reports
from California markets.
The Oregonian said that re
ports are that California canners

Broadcast Planned
On Jacksonville
Jacksonville Historic Jack
sonville and the Jacksonville
Gold Rush Jubilee will be fea
tured , Saturday on a radio pro
gram to be carried by the Na
tional Broadcasting company,
sponsors of the jubilee said -today.
The program will be broad
cast on the NBC network at 7:30
p.m. Saturday and will be re
broadcast here at 2:30 p.m. Sun
day by radio station KMED, the
local NBC outlet.
Script for the half hour broad
cast was written in part by Mrs.
Robert Holcomb, Shady Cove,
who also appears on the pro
gram. Others taking part in the
program include Dick Spain's
band, the Methodist Church
choir, under the direction of C.
R. Adamson; the Catholic Men's
choir, under the direction of
Father C. J. Linehan; Vic Flood,
the Harmonaires, "The Three
Notes and Dad," Ruth Kilbourn
and other Footlighters players
and "Scotty Matheny.
Also taking part in the pro
gram are Announcers Bud
Beachwood and Chuck Field,
Russ Jamison, assistant produc
er; Jennings Pierce, producer
and narrator; Roy Johnson and
Don Smith, technical producers,
all of KMED.
The program pictures the
hardships of the pioneers' and
traces the background of some
of the historic items located in
the Southern Oregon Historical
society's museum in Jacksonville.
The Bermuda cedar is mis
named, says the National Geo
graphic Society. It is actually
a juniper of a type found no
where else in the world.
