Liquor Commission Wants
Sentiment of People on
Closing Hour Regulations
By WILLIAM WARREN
Salem (U.R) What time do
you want to stop drinking?
One a.m. at the taverns and
2:30 a.m. at the bottle clubs, as
at present, or earlier or later?
The Oregon Liquor Control
Commission wants your reaction
to that question. Holding its
first meeting in its new head
quarters on the fifth floor of the
State Highway building, the
commission considered a change
in present closing time.
1 A.M. Time Farored
The sentiment seemed to be
for a uniform 1 a.m. (PST) clos
ing hour, on the theory Oregon
regulations should not discrim
inate against tavern owners in
favor of bottle clubs.
So what do you think the clos
ing hours should be? Remain at
the present status? Close at 1
a.m. as in 10 states? Close at 1:30
a m. as in one state, after 2 a.m.
as in five states? Or would you
prefer local option for closing
as in seven states?
The thinking of the commis
sion is to make 1 a.m. the uni
form closing hour for sale or
consumption of alcoholic bever
ages in any form after 1 a.m.
There could be no subterfuge,
such as buying a dozen drinks
just before 1 a.m. and then legal
ly consuming them to any hour.
Consumption as well as sale,
other than in private homes,
would be banned after 1 a.m.

CONFIDENCE
MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FIFTEEN
Robert L. Elfstrom, Salem,
chairman of the commission, and
commission members William A.
Spangler, Eagle Point, and J. H.
Sroufe, Portland, said they were
postponing a decision on the
matter until the August meeting
because they want the people's
reaction to the uniform closing
regulation before acting on it.
Sentiments Seen
William A. Baillie, the com
mission's new administrator,
said he believed sentiments most
ly would be in favor of the earl
ier and uniform closing of 1 a.m.
To the question posed as to
whether bottle clubs would be
oppressed economically by the
earlier closing, the opinion seem
ed to be that they would make
as much money as currently, be
cause those bent on a night out
would get started a little earlier
and go earlier.
But the commission puts it up
to you. What do you think?
