My son is 5Vz years old and
weighs 54 pounds, writes Mrs.

sore feet and
legs during
the night and

So far the
boy's mother
behaves well
enough. But
there follows
the inevitable

boy is "very heavy, so maybe
that's why his feet ache" sug
gests his mother. And then, lest
I get any wrong idea, she assures
me the little boy has sufficient
vitamins, thank you, for "he
eats very heartily."
The little boy is, say, ten
pounds heavier than the aver
age but this is only one factor
mother does not mention his
height. But excess weight alone
would hardly cause the trouble
described.
Apparently it has not yet oc
curred to this little boy's parents
to consult a physician. They are
so preoccupied with the "foot
specialist in the shoe store" and
with everyone's advice about x-
ray and the like that the sugges
tion of medical advice for the
strikes them as absurd.
I can assure Mrs. M. H. that
millions of" Americans, young
and old, suffer from various
vitamin andor mineral nutri
tional deficiency troubles even
though they eat heartily of
ultrarefined food.
As a diagnostician I have nev
er set the world afire, especially
via long distance, but I hope
;. Mrs. H. will give her young son
j the benefit of (a) high calcium
' diet, (b) a suitable daily ration of
j calcium and vitamin D to sup
j plement his diet, not for a week
; or two but for a year or more
this is not medicine, but merely
food which the young body re
quires and too often does not get
from ordinary diet.'
