Kefauver Charges Scheme Afoot
For Synthetic Stevenson Draft

Kefauver Wednesday accused
Jacob M. Arvey, Democratic na
tional committeeman, from Ill
inois, of conniving and scheming
for a "synthetic draft" of Gov.
Adlai Stevenson as the Demo
cratic presidential nominee.
The Tennessee senator also
told a cheering crowd of 400 of
his supporters for the Democrat
ic presidential nomination that
he would "not accept or consid
er" the vice presidential nomin
ation. Toughest Speech
It was Kefauvor"s toughest
speech to date and came as forc
es of Averell Harriman and Ke
fauver worked to pool their
strength and stop a Stevenson
bandwagon movement.
Arvey, a power in the party,
has been pushing the nomination
of Stevenson despite the govern
or's reluctance.
Kefauver told a foot-stamp
ing, cheering crowd at a break
fast meeting in the Congress
hotel, that Stevenson has ex
pressed no stand on labor, civil
rights, and other issues.
"Do you know where Steven
son stands on labor?" Kefauver
asked.
"No, no," the crowds shouted.
"Are you going to allow a
draft?"
"No, no," his backers roared.
State of Confusion
Kefauver said that the fight
over, the loyalty pledge issue in
the convention is in 'a state of
confusion," and that he will not
accept the peace proposal of
Sen. Blair Moody of Michigan
unless it carries an outright
pledge that Southern delegates
will do their best to assure that
the candidates chosen at the con
vention are on the ballot in their
states in November.

Kefauver also took a swing
at Chicago newspapers, which,
he said, want Arvey to be suc
cessful in drafting Stevenson,
and were "really Republican"
newspapers at heart.
Kefauver's floor leader, Pitt
Tyson Maner, said Stevenson
supporters are led by "a guy
named Arvey who has a pipe
line to Springfield and wants to
extend it to Washington."

Ex-OLCC Bookkeeper
Gets Prison Term
Portland (U.R) Fred J.
Clemo, 59, former bookkeeper
for the Oregon State Liquor
Control Commission has been
sentenced to five years in ' the
state penitentiary for larceny of
public money.
Clemo pleaded guilty to the
charge and was sentenced Tues
day by Multnomah County Cir
cuit Judge MacCormac Snow.
The ex-bookkeeper is accused
of misappropriating some $4200
but Deputy District Attorney
Robert R. Carney told the court
that since return of the indict
ment the shortage was found to
be nearly $28,000.
Friends of Clemo said he had
lost most of the money in poker
games.
Dentists File Suit
To Divorce School
Salem (U.R) Oregon den
tists have filed suit in Marion
county circuit court to force the
State Board of Higher Education
to separate the University of
Oregon Dental School from di
rect university control.
The suit was filed by the Ore
gon State Dental Association,
the advisory committee of the
dental school and District At
torney Edward O. Stadter Jr. of
Marion county. It contends the
1945 law establishing the dental
school provides the school shall
operate directly under control,
management and jurisdiction of
the State Board of Higher Education.
Eagle Point School
Bids Called Aug. 8
Eagle Point A call for bids
for erection of an addition to
the Eagle Point elementary
school has been announced by
school district 9.
The addition will be about 200
feet by 80 feet. It will be a one-
story pumice block bulding and
will consist of six classrooms,
toilet . rooms, janitors' and stor
age rooms and covered corridors.
It will be built south of the pres-
sent bulding. .
Bids, are to be delivered to
Superintendent Glen D. Hale by
8 p.m. August 8. Hale's offices
are in the high school building
in- Eagle Point.

Drunken Prison Escapees
In Short Bolt for Freedom
Salem (U.R) Two prisoners
from Oregon State prison were
behind bars again Wednesday
after they made an audacious at
tempt at freedom while intoxi
cated Tuesday night.
Frank George McDonald, 55,
and Edward G. DeHart, 36, both
trusties, were apprehended by
aroused citizens less than half
an hour after they left the
grounds of the penitentiary in a
stolen prison truck around
9 p.m.

retirement benefits will get in
creases in their checks of at
least S5 a month, effective
Sept. 1.
James Peebles, manager of
the Portland Social Security Ad
ministration office, said about
60,000 Oregon beneficiaries
were affected by legislation
signed Friday by President Tru
man providing increases of S5 a
month or 12V per cent of what
previously was received, which
ever is larger.
Some Get State Aid
Some 5,000 will receive no ac
tual boost because, in addition to
receiving federal social security
pensions, they get supplemental
aid from state welfare funds.
The federal increase will be
added to benefits, but the state
aid will be reduced by a similar
amount. "-
The new federal legislation
also authorizes aid to public as:
sistance recipients the - aged,
blind, totally disabled and de
pendent children to be in
creased from $3 to $5 a week.
About 35,000 persons in Oregon
are involved.

When is a Hedge
Really a Fence
When is a hedge a fence?
That is something the City of
Medford is trying to decide.
A woman appeared at the
city council meeting last night
to object that a hedge next to
her house is 14 feel high.
Fences are limited to a height
of four feet, she said, and
some cities Los Angeles
and Portland have declared
hedges are the same as fences
and liable to the same restric
tions. Looking at the city ordin
ance regarding fences, the
council decided that it needs
clarification. "It leaves us on
the fence," Councilman Paul
Selby said seriously.
The matter was referred to
the superintendent's office and
the city attorney for further
study. Mayor Diamond Flynn
said he expected some action
to be taken before the next
council meeting.

toxicated by drinking pruno, a
liquor made by fermenting fruit
juice. They climbed into a pick
up truck owned by the prison
and raced away down the street
only to crash into a- house two
blocks away.
The inebriated convicts were
taken into custody by citizens of
the neighborhood and held un
til prison officials and guards
arrived, according to Deputy
Warden Larry O'Brien.
Long Criminal Record
McDonald was sentenced to
serve 15 years on Aug. 21, 1945
from Multnomah county for as
sault and robbery while armed
with a dangerous weapon. He
has a criminal record dating
back to 1918.
DeHart was sentenced from
Marion county on Aug. 30, 1951,
for three years on a burglary
count.
Medford Boys Given
Green Guard Badges
Two Medford youngsters were
presented the badges of captains
in the Green Guard of the Keep
Oregon Green association at
ceremonies at the Toy House
yesterday.
They are Teddy Lawson, son
of Dr. and Mrs. Earl Lawson,
40 Crater Lake avenue, and Sam
Jennings Jr., son of Mr. and
Mrs. Sam Jennings, 932 Reddy
avenue.
The badges were presented to
the boys for obtaining five new
members each in the Green
Guard, which is the organization
of youngsters who are trained
to spot and report forest fires,
and given material to ' increase
public consciousness of the dan
ger of fires.

is in charge of Green Guard re
cruiting for the KOG committee
in Jackson County, and has en
listed a number of young people
in the organization. He and L. L.
Simpson, county KOG chair

Unique Passion Play
Scheduled Aug. 4 to 8
Portland The American
passion play, "The Gift of God,"
will be shown for the second
season at the Reed college cam
pus here, August 4 to 8 at 8:30
p.m.
The play differs from most
plays of its type in that the part
of Christ is not played by a vis
ible actor, according to the auth
or and producer, the Rev. Dr.
Louis Harrison Kaub. "But He
is there," Dr. Kaub said.
The play is presented without
admissino by the Portland Meth
odist Ministers' association. Its
cast numbers 150 and there is
a choir of 100 voices. The play
is nonsectarian and is intended
as "an adventure in worship."
"Certain parts of the Portland
production were superior to the
famed German- Oberammergau
passion play," according to Dr,
Ralph Walker, of First Baptist
church in Portland, who has
seen both productions.
