It is good to be back in Ore
gon after 10 days -weathering
fog and cold in the San Fran
cisco Bay region. The trip was
made via the new bus service
chartered by the SP to replace
passenger train service between
Grants Pass and Dunsmuir.
All things considered, it is an
enjoyable modern journey be
tween here and San Francisco,
with not too much train ride
(six hours) and not too much bus
travel (three hours). Careful
driving of the big buses and air
conditioning make for ease of
mind and comfort.
Not many passengers take ad
vantage of the service as yet
however. The scenic advantages
are extraordinary. A 10 minute
layover at the Yreka Coffee
shop breaks the monotony.
And something has perked up
the service on the streamliners.
The return trip was noticeable
in this respect, especially in the
diners.

Medford from the Dunsmuir

here to investigate some mag
nesium deposits in which he is
interested and ran into a culvert
near Bakersfield, Calif. He was
hauled out of the wreckage,
dusted off and sent on his way

It is interesting to recall at
this stage of matters political

er, and George Tallmadge cor
responds frequently with Jim
Farley, who in the state of divi

Very few people who know
George I. Tallmadge are aware

sents my statement that Geral
dine Farrar's performance of
the highly baffling role of Car
men was only fair. That, of
course, is a matter of opinion
However, the gentleman refers
to Miss Farrar as "the first Am
erican singer to essay the role
of Carmen." That will cost him
one Pittsburgh stogie. The role
of Carmen was created by an
American. By a singer who was
born in New York City, reared
what I wanted. It was very dark
inside and to show my friend
ship, I took off my cartridge
belt and gun and handed them
to him.

Tallmadge has a tattoo mark

Under the present Oregon
Milk Control Law the mini
mum retail price of the milk
your child drinks is fixed by
the Milk Administration. It is
unlawful to sell milk below
that fixed price.
The Milk Administrator
prohibits passing on to you
any savings from efficiency in
wholesale distribution. Lower
cash-and-carry store prices are
also forbidden.
Thus many parents cannot afford all the
milk their growing children need.
What Safeway Stands hi
Safeway believes that the producer and con
sumer are harmed by milk regulations which
fix prices of milk beyond the producer level.
For example, price fixing at the retail, level
tends to reduce competition, create monopolies,
and discourage modern economies in process
ing, packaging, and retailing milk. As a result
the price to the consumer is often higher than
necessary resulting in reduced purchases,
smaller consumption and disastrous milk
surpluses.
When consumers pay cash for milk and
carry it home from the store, they save the
cost of home delivery and credit. Safeway
believes the consumer is entitled to that saving.
It is Safeway policy neither to use milk as a
"loss leader" nor to attempt to make an
unwarranted profit on its sale.

formidable candidate. He was

India Edwards Sees

Edwards, who lost her husband

Star mothers of the Korean war
should ignore those "who would
make you feel that your sons
have been killed in a useless
war.
She told the Democratic Na
tional Convention Tuesday night
the Korean war has been the
"least useless" in our history.
Mrs. Edwards, vice chairman
of the Democratic National Com
mittee, said neither Democrats
nor Republicans can guarantee
peace but that the Democrats
