Polio Serum Experiment
Gets Under Way in Iowa as
Sioux City Has 13th Death
Sioux City, la. (U.R) Urg
ently needed iron lungs were
rushed here Monday as thous
ands of anxious parents awaited
the start of a mass experiment
with an untried anti-polio serum.
More than 16,000 children be
tween the ages of one and 11
will start receiving inoculations
today in the second test of its
kind this year.
Gamma Globulin Used
Half the children will be in
oculated with gamma globulin
serum. The rest will receive an
injection of a harmless gelatin
substance.
None of the children, or the
parents, will know whether they
have been inoculated with the
serum or the harmless 'gelatin
solution. The type of inocula
tion will be kept secret until
doctors publish their conclusions
on the test.
Won't Prevent Polio
Medical experts know that
gamma globulin will not prevent
polio. However, they are trying
to determine if the serum will
take the paralysis out of the
crippling disease,
Two iron lungs were rushed
here by Army plane from Dul
uth, Minn., Sunday night as the
city recorded its 13th death dur
ing the current epidemic of pol
io.

DISILLUTIONED MOTHER
POISONS DAUGHTER'S MIND
When a person has had an un
happy experience, she is likely
to be bitter and disillutioned.
This unfavorable attitude ex
presses itself in the advice she
gives others. Here is a typical
case: -
(Q) "I am very much in
love with a wonderful fellow.
My mother has been telling
me for years that I shouldn't
marry until I am 25 years old
because, she says, no matter
how nice a fellow is to you
before you are married, he
ifn,'t going to treat you nice
ly after he marries you. She
also tells me I'm going to be
sorry after I marry this fel
low. Now I don't know what
to do."
(A) In one respect, your
mother's advice is good. You
have a much greater chance for
a happy marriage if you are a
bit older than most girls think
they should be when they marry. '
By ELIZABETH HURLOCK, PH.D.
That does not mean that you
should wait until your 25th
birthday but it would be wise
to fct until you are close to
that jtime.
There are several reasons for
this. 'In the first place, you and
the man you marry will be more
mature and,
as a result,
will be' able to
adjust to each
other and to
marriage bet
ter. Then there
is- the finan
cial situation.

business, you will not have to
worry as much as younger peo
ple usually do. Financial prob
lems cause lots of unhappiness
in marriage.
As for a man's not treating his
wife well after marriage, that
is not always true. No man mar-

ries with the intention of treat
ing his wife badly. If he does so,
it is because he is unhappy and
disillusioned. In many cases,
that is his wife's fault.
Mother Made Bitter
Your mother's marriage may
not have been as happy as she
dreamed it would be. This has
made her bitter and disillusion
ed. She is trying to keep you
from the same unhappiness she ;
has had but I think she has '
gone about it the wrong way.
Ask her to tell you what has
made her marriage unhappy and
what part she has" contributed
to this unhappiness. Then you
can profit by her experience.
If you J are prepared to make
your marriage happy, you have
a very good chance of success.
