Chinese Becoming
Hateful of Russ,
Douglas Claims
Chicago U.R) Sen. Paul
H. Douglas, D-Ill., said Monday
the Chinese are beginning to
hate their Russian masteri as a
result of the Korean war and
that "the soil is therefore being
prepared" for a revolt.
He said also that when Rus
sian Premier Josef Stalin dies,
a struggle for power may break
out in the Soviet Politburo
"which would convulse Russia
and render it incapable of ag
gression for a long time."
May Gain Long Peace
"If we can deter him for a
few years from attacking, we
may gain a long peace," Doug
las said in an address prepared
for the opening session of the
Democratic National Conven
tion. "Once the Russian dictator
ship starts breaking up, the ice
will melt rapidly."
Douglas said there is no
"iron-clad guarantee" of peace
but that the administration's pol
icy is "effective resistance" to
Communist aggression "is not
only the best but is indeed the
only hope for peace in the
world."
Oregon To Stick
With Kefauver
Chicago (U.R) National
Commiteeman Monroe Sweet
land said Monday that the Ore
gon delegation will stick with
Sen. Estes Kefauver "as long
as he is in the running" for
the Democratic presidential
nomination.
Sweetland said a report that
some delegates from Oregon
were talking about supporting
another candidate after the first
ballot was not true, so far as
he knew.
"We are committed to Ke
fauver by the results of the Ore
gon primary," he said. "There
seems to be no disposition on
the part of any one in the dele
gation so far as we can deter
mine to do anything but remain
solid for Kefauver."

Identify of Meteorites

Since my' report and tracing
map of the fiery, booming Seat
tle meteor of early May appear
ed in the newspapers on June
15, I have literally been bom
barded by a shower of stones.
These did not descent from the
skies. They reached me by way
of the mail carrier. The senders
were sure or at least hoped
that their specimens were true
"stones that fell from the heav
ens." I am always glad to examine
such arrivals in the hope that
a real meteorite will show up.
These recent arrivals, however,
have been not meteorites but
"meteorongs." In my 20 years
at this work I have found that
only one-half of one per cent of
the 1000 or more "suspects" re
ceived have been the "real
thing." But that has been quite
worthwhile.
Most of the samples received
are lava, clinkers, granite, jas
per shale, thunder eggs and even
agates. Many senders were sure
they saw their "finds" descend
in a blaze of glory the nignt De
fore they .were picked up. Let
me auote here from a pamphlet
by Dr. H. H. Nininger, the inter
nationally known meteorite ex
pert.
Not Light Rocks
"Meteorites are not light, por
us rocks. They are not round
like a ball. At least no round one
is yet known. They are not hol
low. They do not come to the
ground in a burning condition.
Thev do not set fires. They burn
while high in the air but gen
erally cease burning about five
in 20 miles above the eartn.
They do not look like cinders
What then are the character
ictire nf meteorites? They are
heavv. much heavier than ordi
narv rnr-ks. and are solid. One
tvne is very weighty. Freshly
fallen ones are generally cov
ered with a thin fusion crust,
usually dark in color. Their
shape is irregular and their sur
face is often pitted.
There are three general types
of meteorites: metal, stony-met
al, and stony. The metallic type
consists roughly of about 90 per
cent of iron and 10 per cent of
nickel. A file vd on such will
rpmove the thil Sdark crust and
reveal a silverjKippearing inter
ior. A cut, polished surface
properly treated with acid brings
out the beautiful crystalline
structure never found in terres
trial rocks.
Stony Type
The stony type" is mostly stone
with tiny, silvery nicKewron
grains scattered through the
mass. A cut, polished surface
shows this nicely. The stony-
metal is the rarest and most
beautiful of all. It consists of a
network of the silvery metal
holding stony crystals of various
colors. .
If your specimen fulfills above
specifications, send by mail a
small piece the size of a walnut
for identification. Do not send
a large mass unless asked to
And by all means do not make
a long trip to bring your find.
It is then too painful to you and
to me to have to tell you it is a
"meteorong." This has several
times occurred.

Treaty Organization planners,
seeking urgently to back field
divisions with competent Euro
pean reserves, cast envious eyes
at Switzerland, where a force of
some 15 divisions can' be mobi
lized in 48 hours.
There is hardly a professional
military man on the staffs of the
14 nations comprising the At
lantic alliance who doesn't envy
the mobilization scheme of the
tiny "neutral" nation. " It com
pares with the American -'Minute
Men" who fought Britain in
the Revolution.
It makes Switzerland a bar
rier to any possible Communist
expansion in that direction.
Plans to back present NATO
troops deployed against any
Russian attack with adequate re
serves that would enable them
to hold out for some length of
time is one of the main head
aches plaguing Gen. Matthew B.
Ridgway and his staff. There
doesn't seem to be any immedi
ate solution in sight.
Always Armed
Almost any western military
planner admits openly that the
western allies including the
United States could pick up a
few. tips from the little land be
hind the Alps where every man
above the age of 20 packs a gun
and can shoot it in the tradition
of William Tell.
Bigger nations such as Britain
and France, as well as the Unit
ed States, at present would take
anywhere from weeks to months
for their complicated mobiliza
tion schemes to call shoe clerks
from the stores and put them in
uniform behind a gun.
The "model" Swiss mobiliza
tion scheme works smoothly.
Every able-bodied male reaeh
ing 20 receives four months
basic training. From then until
he reaches 30 he takes a three
week refresher course every
year. After that he is earmarked
for the reserve and instant mobi
lization until he "retires" at the
age of 60 and is given his army
rifle as a gift.
Always, he keeps his gun, uni
form and ammunition in his
home.
Must Keep Sharp
Furthermore, every one of
them is required to .shoot at
least 24 rounds a year. The
sharpshooting Swiss usi&lly fire
off a lot more shells than that,
A force of some 15 divisions
can be fielded within 48 hours
by the Swiss mobilization plans.
Under the scheme, about 200,
000 men are in uniform at any
one time. A force of 10,000
"civilian" specialists maintain
Switzerland's modern tanks and
artillery.
The Swiss army is one of the
best equipped on the continent,

stantly amid the tricky air cur
rents of the snow-capped Alps
Switzerland, furthermore, is
well equipped with secret "Sun
day punch" defenses that the
average tourist probably never
notices as he purrs in his auto;

Defenses Strong
Spotted strategically all along
the roads are tank traps and otK
stacles that can be "sprung" at a J
moment's notice. The hills andJ
mountains are checkered witn
well-armed pill boxes in which
a handful of men probably could
hold out almost indefinitely
against a much stronger foree.
Allied intelligence experts are
still inclined to go along, with
the German war-time -assessment
of the danger of trying to
march into Switzerland when
Hitler's Wehrmacht thought it
over and decided the price
would be too high.
The same intelligence officers
are inclined to believe also that
the Russian general staff would
not try to pay the bloody price
necessary to conquer the neu
tral little land. The Swiss leave
no doubt they will fight hard if
attacked.
So, still neutral and not a
member of the western anti
Communist alliance, Switzer
land is a "dividend" to the
NATO planners drawing defense
plans for western Europe.
