FIERY DEATH TRAIL A private plane (arrow) leaves a trail of
burned houses and scattered wreckage after crashing in residential
section in El Segundo, Calif. Four persons aboard the four-place
plane were killed. The plane dove into the house in right foreground
in early morning fog and also set fire to adjoining house. Neighbors
of owners of the damaged homes received minor burns as they
fought the flames with garden hoses.

WHICH KIND OF SUGAR?
Dr. Bradr
It is not just by chance that
babies today are more vigorous,
have lower mortality rate, are
more likely to
. survive the
' ; perils of child-
h o o d, grow
and develop
faster and are
happier than
babies were
when you and
I wore didies.
For one
thing, doctors,
druggists, nur
ses, neighborhood saireygamps
and parents no longer make a
practice of plying infants with
opium, in the form of laudanum,
paregoric, soothing syrup, colic
cure or cough mixture.
Nowadays intelligent people
give babies a break in the way
of cleanliness, fresh air, light,
comfortable clothing and bed
covers or none, as weather and
common sense dictate, pure
wholesome food and protection
against unsolicited advice by in
terfering relatives.
Although some people remain
unconvinced that it would be
advisable or even proper to in
struct boys and girls in the care
and feeding of infants, I predict
that this will eventually become
a prerequisite for entrance into
high school.
The newer knowledge of nu
trition, acquired since Topsy
was a colt and her driver an
honest (99.44 per cent) doctor
in Penn Yan, enables us to pre
vent manifestations of deficien
cy diseases conditions which
formerly made many babies un
happy and still do handicap un
derprivileged children. I use
that detestable word, "under
privileged," not in the snobbish
sense Lady Bountiful and the
lunch club boys do, but as mean
ing just one thing, that the par
ents of these unhappy babies
lack intelligence or common
sense. They pay more than 60
cents a pound for fancy sugar
prescribed by a trick pediatrist,
although no reputable physician
or nutrition authority has shown
or even dare claim it is in any
way superior to ordinary cane
or beet sugar in infant feeding
or in the diet of invalids or
healthy persons.
Theoretically lactose, the
sugar naturally, present in milk,
should be preferred for infant
feeding. It was' commonly used
for the purpose in the era of
mathematical formula feeding.
Some investigators today be
lieve milk sugar makes more
utilizable the calcium which has
been assimilated from food.
Whether this is so or not, milk
sugar costs more than pure cane
or beet sugar and physicians
who prescribe it in preference to
cane sugar or beet sugar do so
principally because it is not so
sweet as cane sugar and there
fore does not accustom the baby
to sweet foods.
One kind of sugar is as easily
digested as another and yields
the same number of calories.
The sugar of milk represents
about one-half the caloric value
of milk and sugar of one kind or
another should supply one-half
of the caloric requirements of
the baby.

Korean Reds Charge Prisoners Are Spying
Toqyo, Sunday (U.R) The
Communists accused the United
