Your Health and Its Care
By DR. WILLIAM BRADY. M.D.
Readers should address inquiries to: William Brady.

(Answer to Mrs. T. L. A.)
No danger in pluqking eye
brows. (Answer to Mrs. D. G.)
QUESTION BOX
Meat broth, boullion, clear I

soup or consomme is a miia'
stimulant to the stomach or
digestion and
the circulation
if it ' is taken
hot, but it has
virtually no
nutritive val
ue. Neither has
meat juice or
so- called ex
tract. The old
timers imagin
ed these items
Dr. Brady , e r e "nourish
ing." They are not.
A preparation of meat extract
with a little vegetable extract
still enjoys considerable demand
in England as a "tonic." In Yan
keeland various preparations
with a meat flavor contain
enough alcohol to meet the re
quirements if the doctor wishes
to prescribe alcohol without
mentioning wnisKey, Dranay or
other liquor.
(Answer for D. M.)
To the best of my knowledge
a person cannot assimilate or
utilize the calcium in drinking
water. On the other hand, no
matter how much calcium in the
water (calcium sulphate, chlor
ide, carbonate or bicarbonate)
nor how hard the water may be,
if it tastes good it is good drink
ing water regardless of calcium
content.
(Answer to V. W.)
No, five weeks was not long
enough for a test. It probably
took five years or at least five
months of calcium and D defi
ciency to bring on the joint
lameness. Even if it seems so
much better now the trouble
will presently develop again if
you resume your deficient diet.
Send stamped, self-addressed en
velope for the pamphlet Cal
c i u m and Rheumatiz and
please remember you are merely
supplementing your inadequate
diet, not taking medicine.
(Answer to Mrs. H. F.)
I don't know why the heart
skips a beat now -and then. It
can't be very dangerous and it
shouldn't scare you. Mine has
done so for many years it
merely makes me wonder why
and how the heartbeat can be
so well regulated most of the
time.
(Answer to H. R. F.)
Please do not ask me to com
ment on or give a post-mortem
opinion on information yH sup
ply. I never could see how I
could do any good that way.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Cleft Palate
Baby born six weeks ago has cleft
palate. Doctor said it is lucky that
harelip did not occur with it. At first
he said plastic operation would be
best when baby is about four months
old. but later said he had changed
his mind and that the corrective op
eration could be done when the baby
is 1 to 2 years old. Now relatives.

(Answer to Miss B. J. M.)
Varicocele (enlarged veins in
spermatic cord) usually has no
effect on health and needs no
treatment unless there is actual
discomfort, in which case it. is
up to the doctor to decide
whether a suspensory or opera
tion is required.

Japanese Earthquake Kills Three Persons
Osaka, Japan (U.R) Three
persons were killed and at least
82 injured . early Friday in a
strong earthquake that rocked
Osaka and a 650 square mile
area of Central Japan.
Seismologists rated the
strength of the tremor as four
on a scale of seven. They said
the toll was relatively small be
cause the epicenter was unusual
ly deep-seated about 25 miles
below the earth's surface under
the mountains of Nara Prefec
ture. Police said 31 houses and
buildings were destroyed or seri
ously damaged. Rescue work and
clearing of the debris were hamp
ered by strong rains which did
not let up until daybreak.
Berlin (U.R) The Western
Allies increased their military
police patrols along the West
Berlin borders Friday in a move
to hinder Communist kidnaping
raids.
Answer' No. It is gooa Tor all cases,
