Pilot Makes Report
To Copcoon Line
Break in Storm
Harvey M. Brandau, one of
the pilots conducting cloud
seeding operations for the pre
vention of hail on valley or
chards, was commended last
week for his assistance to the
California Oregon Power com
pany in spotting and reporting
a transmission line break.
Brandau was flying over the
Greensprings pass area the after
noon of Friday, July 11, when
he saw a large flash near the
ground, after a lightning strike.
After he landed, he reported it
to Copco.
In a letter, F. A. Benesh, Cop
co district manager, told Bran
dau that "this information was
of material assistance in prompt
location of the line fault and
riisnatchins of crews. We wish to
commend the alertness of your
observation and extend our sin
cere appreciation of your efforts
in our behalf."
Benesh also said that the light
ning burned out an insulator,
with a resultant "flash-over" to
adjacent conductors and destruc
tion of insulators. Crewmen
worked well past midnight to
make repairs on the line, which
crosses the shoulder of Soda
mountain, in the southeast por
tion of the county, where tne
break took ploce.
Brandau recently returned to
Medford after a three-month
season conducting cloud-seeding
operations for the prevention of
hail in the Sacramento area. He
said the efforts have been
termed successful, with no hail
damage reported in the area
where seeding took place, al
though hail fell immediately
outside that area.
A California state law governs
the operation of cloud seeding
and other weather control ex
periments, Brandau reported. A
S50 license is required, and pi
lots make reports telling the
time they are in the air, the
area, and the date. The results
of these reports are compiled
by the state in a continuing
study of the effects of cloud
seeding, so that definite, long
term results can be accurately
determined.
A total of 150 hours were
flown in three months. Brandau
said, and during that time there
were five major "disturbances"
of the type frequently carrying
hail.
The products which the fliers
were retained to protect there
?re mostly tree fruit crops, sim
ilar to those grown in the Rogue
valley.
"Help yourself" cafeteria cars
dispensing cold meats, sand
wiches, pastries and beverages
are now run on British railways.

load their trays and dine on con
venient tip-up tables.
Ex-Pendleton Mayor
Dies In California

Friday at Oakland, Calif., where J
he had resided in retirement .

1921-23 and served as postmaster
in 1933-48 before moving to Oak
land. He was a veteran of the
Spanish-American war and ac
tive on the committee for the
"Save the Battleship Oregon"
fund.
Study of Klamath
Basin Water Usage
Receives Approval
Klamath Basin, Calif. U.R)
The California State Water Re
sources board Saturday approved
a three-year proposed work pro
gram for the Klamath River ba
sin investigation in northern
California and southern Oregon.
The basin includes 15,715
square miles, of which 4,695
square miles are in Oregon. The
drainage basin includes the wa
tersheds of the Klamath, Shasta,
Scott. Salmon and Trinity rivers.
Estimated cost of the three
year investigation is $177,000.
The California legislature has
allocated $50,000 for studies of
the basin.
Included in the work program
were:
1. Inventory of water re
sources of the basin, both sur
face and underground.
2. Classification of lands with
in the basin as to present and
ultimate agricultural use.
3. Study of present water use
and estimate of water require
ments under ultimate develop
ment. 4. A study of the flood flows
in the basin and means for their
controls.
Four Boys Held
In Garage Break-In
Four boys were held here
temporarily by the polce for
breaking into the garage at a
vacant house at 614 West Clark.
The illegal entry was reported
by Isaac H. Porter, 20 South
Orange street, caretaker of the
property.
The boys cut limbs from a
tree on the property and one of
them took a box of shells out of
the garage, according to the po
lice report.
The property is owned by Man
zic Biden, Crescent, Ore.
