Mass Poisoning

Saturday was blamed Thursday
by Dr. Thomas L. Meador, Port
land city health officer, for the
mass food poisoning that sent
138 victims to the hospital.
Dr. Meador reported that
coagulation tests, conducted by
J. D. Penrod, chief city bacter
iologist, proved that staphylo
cocci present in the ham eaten
by many of the picnickers
caused food poisoning.
He said other food at the pic
nic showed traces of the bac
teria, but "the offending food
was the ham."
Form of Ptomaine
The staDhvlococci. which at
tacks the red blood cells through
hemolytic action, causes a form
of ptomaine poisoning, with
diarrhea, vomiting and cramps.
Several persons were fortunate
enough tp escape the poisoning
because they drank copiously of
liquids, Dr. Meador said.

The wives of presidential can
didates are much photographed
these days. There being two mil
lion more women than men elig
ible to vote in the presidential
election the personality and ap
pearance of a candidate's matri
monial mate is naturally consid
ered an important factor in his
success. One wonders what
would be the reaction of the
feminine voters to a bachelor
candidate. There have been only
three bachelor candidates for
the presidency, Buchanan, Til
den and Cleveland. Two were
winners, Buchanan and Cleve
land. The first candidate of the
Republican party, John C Fre
mont was defeated by bachelor
Buchanan, a handsome six-foot
er. However, Mr. Buchanan was
not much of a president.
Snoring Husbands.
New Yorker asks if our
Mules & Men department has
any helpful hints to offer to a
wife who suffers from a snoring
husband. Our experts have de
voted much time to research on
this problem but have had little
success. All they can suggest is
use ear stoppers or arrange for
separate bedrooms. It has been
claimed if a wife whistles Yan
kee Doodle it will stop her hus
band's snoring. We checked this.
It does stop the snoring, but only
temporarily. After about fifteen
minutes silence the wife has to
start whistling Yankee Doodle
again. It is also said men only
snore when lying on their backs

been alternating two pairs of
these for the past six months
and has never had. a run in the
same. They are fifty-one gauge,
thirty denier. The lady says the
manufacturers are right. The
reason so many women wear out
their nylons so quickly is be
cause they don't know how to
care for the same. Or are too
lazy to do so.
Legal Device Fails
To Unload Tunafish
Portland (U.R)An "ingenious"
legal device to get a strike-bound
shipload of fish unloaded was
upset Thursday by a federal
court ruling.
Federal District Judge Gus J.
Solomon Wednesday threw out
a suit of the Columbia River
Packers association against Pa
cific Far East Lines. The suit
sought to have a U. S. marshal
seize the 1,280 tons of frozen
tuna aboard the steamship line's
S. S. Contest in Astoria, Ore.,
and deliver it to the packing
firm.
The vessel is strikebound by
the current strike of AFL sailors.
Federal Strike Breakers
"You're asking federal offic
ials to act as strike breakers,
the judge indignantly told offic
ials of -the packing firm.
Solomon noted that Pacific Far
East Lines, defendants in the
case, supported the proposed
order.
"There is no real dispute be
tween you two," Solomon told
both sides. "I m not going to is
sue such an order in a case be
tween- two friendly parties."
The judge said .the maneuver
to have the tuna unloaded was
ingenious," but said his court
would not hear it because it was
not a bona fide dispute.

Sanitation Authority Ready
To Get Tough With 10 Cities

fusing to cooperate in the state's
post-war anti-stream pollution
campaign.
The crackdown is expected to
come at a hearing of the author
ity in Portland Friday, when
representatives of the 10 cities
are to appear in response to cita
tions issued three weeks ago.
List of Offenders
The offending cities -were
Newport, Lebanon, Mt. Angel,
Vale, Nyssa, Coquille, Myrtle
Point, Toledo, Wheeler and Ne
halem. According to Curtiss M. Everts
Jr., state sanitary engineer, the
hearings are the result of au
thority's decision to push the
movement to clean up public
streams.
Unless representatives of the
10 cities can produce satisfactory
reasons for not being ordered to
construct sewage treatment fa
cilities, they will probably be
ordered to begin such construc
tion by specific dates or face le
gal action by the state.
Will File Complaint
If a city elects not to comply
with the authority's order, a com
plaint will be filed against the
municipality and the attorney
general will be asked to proceed
against it in- the court
Everts said the r-ithority's or
der may.be appealed by a citjn
within 30 days after it is issued.
Such an appeal would be filed
with the circuit court of the
county in which the city lies.
Since the authority was cre
ated in 1938 by vote of the peo
ple, 37 municipal sewage disposal
and treatment systems have been
built and 18 more are expected
to be completed this year.

County Treasurer's Report Shows
Financial Condition Best in Years
Jackson county is in its best
financial condition in years.
County Treasurer Ralph E.
Sweeney revealed today in his
annual statement of bond and
warrant indebtedness.
The county government got
out of debt for the first time in
many years January 1, and there
has been a slight decrease in the
indebtedness of the county
school "districts, Sweeney said
The total debt for all school dis
tricts is $2,694,465.04.
The total net indebtedness of
the irrigation districts in Jack
son county is $525,290.44. The
Rogue River Valley Irrigation
district is the only one with no
bonds or warrants outstanding.
The Jackson county govern
ment was relieved of its indebt
edness January 1 when the, re
maining $4,000 in Crater Lake
and Jacksonville highway bonds
were retired. These bonds had
been issued in 1922.
