In 'Ghost Town'

Indian Point, Miss. -4U.R) If
this story could have been writ
ten between 1830 or 1850, ev
eryone in the civilized United
States would be familiar with
its dateline. In the earlier de
cades of the 19th century, In
dian Point was one of Mississip
pi's principal population centers.
It was a city of the Old South
a bustling river port on the
Mississippi Delta, roughly 40
miles north of Greenville. Here
planters traded their cotton for
European finery and. Negro
slaves chanted their spirituals
as their backs strained loading
and unloading the river boats.
Today it is a challenge to find
even the site. All that remains
of Indian Point are occasional
brick chimneys, burial plots
with eroded, overturned tomb
stones and abandoned water cis
terns. The land has returned to
a state not far removed from
that in which the first settlers
found it. Only the Indians and
deer are absent.
The forests have reclaimed
the cotton fields and Mississippi
river silt has covered plantation
foundations many times over.
The timbers have floated away,
but the few remaining evidences
indicate a highly cultured popu
lation. Settled by Spanish, French
and English, Indian Point reach
ed its peak development during
the Mexican War, following the
improvement of transportation
along the Mississippi river.
Many sweeping river bottom
plantations were laid out and
fine homes erected but the Mis
sissippi's muddy waters would
n't stay within their banks.
Year after year the flooding
became worse. Finally a levee
system stretching from the
Chickasaw Bluffs south of
Memphis to the Walnut Hills
at Vicksburg was completed in
the early 1850's, leaving en
closed farms the choice of be
ing abandoned or periodically
flooded.
The fertile lands and elabo
rate homes were left one by one
to the ravags of river, weath
er and vegetation. Today the
only inhabitants of the once
highly-cultured area are count
less mosquitos and lazy water
snakes.

Leader Believes No War
Constitution a Mistake

Tokyo (U.R) A. key admiral
in Japan's World War II naval
strategy believes Gen. Douglas
MacArthur should "admit" that
the no-war constitution his occu
pation headquarters introduced
in Japan was a "mistake."
The deposed occupation ruler
should then "come to Japan just
once and call on the emperor,"
former Rear-Admiral Sadatoshi
Tomioka. said in an interview.
Those moves, the one-time
navy tactician said, should be
coupled with a statement from
Washington that the United
States wants Japan as an "equal
partner" in the free world's de
fense system against Commun
ism in the Far East. It should
lead to a blueprint of how Japan
is to be integrated into U. S.
military plans, he added.
He sees those steps as the
measures which would persuade
Japan and the Japanese people
to give up their "false trust" in
peace at any price and join the
fight for liberty on the side of
the democracies.
Tomioka, 55, last World War
II planning director on the nav
el general staff, said there was
no doubt in his mind that the
United States needed and want
ed Japan and Japan must have
the United States.
He warned that indecision re
garding Japan could be as "dan
gerous" to the free world as was
the indecision about Korea in
June, 1950.
Tomioka said he spoke as a
"civilian" but he admitted his
opinions were "not necessarily
representative" of the feeling of
the masses in Japan.
Tomioka was regarded as one
of the most promising young
staff officers in the old imperial
navy. A former baron, he spent
most of his naval career as a
staff expert. He sat in on the
conferences which planned Pearl
Harbor and was present at the
end of Japan's military adven
ture as naval representative on
the Japanese delegation that
signed the surrender on the
U.S.S. Missouri.
Tomioka brushed aside argu
ments th&t the democracies can
do without Japan as long as they
have bases in Okinawa. Pulling
out a map of Asia on which dis
tances ha"d been drawn with a
compass he poked a finger at
Lake Baikal in central Siberia.
"That is where Russia is con
centrating its factories in the
Far East," he said. "Japan is 300
miles closer to Lake Baikal than
Okinawa. A difference of 600
miles in the flight of a fuel-hungry
jet bomber can spell the
margin between life and death
for its crew."
The ex-admiral was contempt
uous of American and Japanese
publicity methods in Japan
which, he charged, have failed
to sell the Japanese -people on
the need for a strong Japanese
defense force.
"There has been too much em
phasis upon peace," he said, "and

Because of that indecision, he
claimed, Japan is not being
treated as an "equal partner" in
the defense pact. He asked that
defense "be made a joint affair,
not a question of charity where
we'are forced to beg."
As it is, he said, Japan is de
pendent upon the United States
but it does not know to what
extent. "Does the security pact
intend that the seventh fleet will
act for Japan as it has for For
mosa?" he asked.
Tomioka predicted that the
danger of a new world war will
be greatest in 1955 or 1956, Rus
sia will have a large stockpile
of atom bombs and United States
military output will have reach
ed peak production.

World; Factories
Are Approaching
Automatic Age
Cleveland, O. (U.R) When
the world's factories become
automatic (and experts believe
the time is rapidly approaching)
the origin of the development
perhaps will be traced in part
to efforts of the Wean Equip
ment Corp. here.
The firm , which now turns
out those huge, intricate, auto
matic, multiple-operation ma
chines, started on its present
task in 1940 when it took over
the old Broden Construction Co.
From then until 1946, Wean con
tinued to turn out steel mill and
wire-drawing machinery.
However, in the past six
years the company has turned to
"monster" machines which do
dozens of operations at one time
with "extreme accuracy .
Two "Queans"
Two outstanding examples of
the company's achievements
along this line are the "Queen
Mary 'and the "Queen Eliza
beth."
The "Queen Mary"' was made
for the Cadillac tank plant in
Cleveland to hasten the manu
facture of Walker bulldog tanks.
This particular machine grinds
smooth 10 surfaces of the
tank's hull in one slick opera
tion which previously was done
in 10 steps and took 20 times as
long.
The "Queen Elizabeth," anoth
er spectacular time and labor
saver, bores 110 holes at once
in a tank hull.
The latest addition on Wean's
automatic family is a "trans
car machine line" built for Mas-
sey-Harris Ltd. to be used in
that firm's tank plant in Racine,
Wise.
No Waste Motion
The operator of the "trans-
car"' rides on a narrow gauge
streetcar which carries the hull
of the Army's largest' tank. As
the "trans-car, its driver and
the tank hull move down the
track, bits and drills intermi
tently attack the hull to mill 10
different surfaces and drill 110
holes in three continuous opera
tions. Besides the obvious labor sav
ing. Wean engineer point out
that not once during this opera
tion does the hull have to be
shifted to andther part of the
plant, or from its original posi
tion.

Wean Jr., has enjoyed a 200 per
cent expansion in the past year,

Wean absorbed Broden.
