Newly Discovered
Disease Hits Hogs
In Fourteen States
Washington (U.PJ Agri-
culture Department officials
and nine state veterinarians
Thursday recommended immed
iate slaughter of hogs which
have been struck by vesicular
exanthema, recently discovered
hog disease.
After a two-day meeting here
the officials also recommended
that infected farms or premises
be kept free of swine until after
they have been thoroughly dis
infected. They also advised that
the pigs be fed only cooked gar
bage. Raw Garbage It Factor -
The report said the feeding
of raw garbage has been a major
factor in the introduction and
spread of the disease at several
stockyards and farms in 14 states
in the last few weeks.
The disease is similar to "foot
and mouths disease but does not
affect cattle or sheep. It has ap
peared chiefly in the Midwest.
Affected animals show blis
ters around the feet, the skin of
the mouth or nostrils. They may
become lame and usually have
high temperatures.
The veterinarians recommen
ded that live hogs on affected
premises be "moved direct to
federal meat-inspection plants
for immediate slaughter and pro
cessing in order to reduce the
amount of virus on farms or
other premises."
Finding of Crater
Lake To Be Theme
Of 1952 Pageant
Jacksonville The theme of
the 1952 pageant for the Gold
Rush Jubilee will be the "Dis
covery of Crater lake," accord
ing to M. L. (Doc) Tweedy, pag
eant chairman.
The event will be based on
Rogue valley writer Dale Vin
cent's feature story telling of
the lake's discovery. Tweedy
expressed the belief that this
story would be the most inter
esting that has ever been por
trayed in Jacksonville as inter
est in the volcanic wonder is
high locally and nationally.
The stage to be used for the
pageant will be a replica of an
old building in the town in
which much of the action which
led to the discovery of Crater
lake took place.
Work on the stage began last
Monday and the pageant will be
performed Saturday evening,
August 2, with admission free.

Seeks Divorce

Marion Davies, friend and long
time confidante of William Ran
dolp Hearst sought Thursday to
end her nine-month marriage to i
Capt. Horace J. Brown.
The former film queen was
the protege of the late publish
er for 31 years. Two months
after his death she . surprised
Hollywood by eloping with
Brown to Las Vegas, Nev., on
Oct. 31.
She sued Brown for divorce
on the grounds of mental cruel
ty in Santa Monica Superior
Court Wednesday.
"The marriage couldn't help
but break up," a close friend of
the couple said. "After 31 years
of not being married, she had a
compulsion to marry. Any wo
man would feel that way."
There will be no alimony or
property settlement, her attorn
ey said.
