Openings Announced
In Federal Service
Examinations for three fed
eral civil service positions have
been announced by the U. S
civil service commission.
One position is for treasury
enforcement agent at $4,20o a
year with appointments in the
alcohol tax unit, narcotic unit
and secret service unit. -Another
is for a patent examiner for fed
eral agencies in Washington, D.
C, and vicinity, which pays
from $3,410 to $5,060 a year.
The third, examination is for a
machinist at $1.80 an hour in
the U. S. Naval ordnance plant
at Pocatello, Idaho.

Most of our early plantings
of corn are now tasseled out and
producing silks.-This brings us
to the point where corn earworm
must be controlled. As soon as
the silks emerge from the end
of the ears, the earworm moth
will deposit eggs on these young
silks. In hot weather these eggs
will hatch in about three days
and the young larvae will crawl
down into the end of the ear and
start feeding.
In order to get control it is
necessary to apply a poison on
these young silks after they be
come visible but before these
eggs hatch. Not all of the ears
produce silks at the same time
so for commercial control it is
best to make the first applica
tion three days after the first
silks appear and one or two
more -at three to four day in
tervals after that.
Spray or Dust
Either a spray or a dust can
be used. In either event the pois
on should be directed toward
the silks. For a spray use a
heaping tablespoon of 50 per
cent DDT in a gallon of water.
For a dust use a 10 per cent
DDT. Repeat applications care
fully timed will give good con
trol of the worms.
In some cases eggs will be
laid on the tassels. The worms
will grow to about half size and
then migrate to the ears. These
frequently enter through the
side of the ear and as a result
are not killed by the poison in
the silks. If trouble is exper
ienced from this type of worm,
it can be controlled by spraying
or dusting the tassels as well as
the silks. As the DDT is not
applied to any edible part of
the corn, there is no danger
from poisoning as a result of
its use.

newly opened cafe in a building
owned by notorious Big Earl
Shelton, one-time member of
Southern Illinois' toughest gang.
Cafe Demolished
The cafe, owned and operated
by Roger and Betty Nicks, was
demolished by the blast. The ex
plosion tore out walls, doors,
fixtures and sent glass flying
down the street.
Windows of buildings two
blocks away were smashed by
the explosion. Sheriff Elmer
Brown said the windows of near
ly every building adjoining the
town square were broken.
Brown, who came running to
the scene in his bare feet, said
he was not sure at first where
the explosion was.
"Hell, I thought they blew up
the Fairfield National Bank," he
said.
Damage About $50,000
The sheriff said he estimated
the damage to the building own
ed by Shelton and adjoining
structures at about S50.000.
Russell Dixon, who lives near
by in his funeral home, was
blown out of bed by the blast.
He said glass from his broken
windows ripped into his bed
room and tore up the furniture.
Bill Theofanopoulos, driving
on a highway about three miles
east of here, said he heard the
qxplosion and saw the flash
when the bomb went off.
Probably After Sheltons
The sheriff said he "had no
idea" who set the bomb off. He
said, however, it was probably
set by somebody who was trying
to get back at the Sheltons.
The Shelton clan terrorized
the "Little Egypt" region of
southern Illinois during the days
of prohibition when it was war
