"Burro Derby Plans
Revealed; Entries
Being Accepted
Jacksonville Competition
for the Gold Rush Jubilee's un
ique Burro derby rose to a "hot
blood' pitch late last week with
a challenge to all comers to en
ter the derby delivered by the
two of the Rogue river valley's
prominent citizens, according to
Jubilee Chairman P. E. (Scotty)
Matheny.
A. C. Van Galder and Mayor
D. L. Fly'nn of Medford, co-owners
of the outstanding burroess,
Lizza Jane III, stated that little
Lizza could "out run, out bray,
or out kick any vintage of bur
ro that the west could produce
today."
Both burro-conaoisseurs attest
ed to the pioneer parentage of
Lizza Jane, stating that she was
from the historic line of Long
John I, "known all over the
west for the record he set on the
pack trails from Yreka to Jack
sonville during the 1850's."
Entry List Open
Race' Promoter Ed Rooney
said that entry against Lizza
Jane is now "wide, open" and
urged application as soon as pos
sible by all owners.
Races will be held on both
August 2 and 3, according to
Rooney. On Saturday, a junior
jockey derby (15 years and un
der) will be held, a pack race
(anyone eligible), a relay race
(twice around the track, change
jockeys at end of first lap), and
a sweepstakes with anyone elig
ible. Sunday's races will feature
a woman's derby (female jock
eys only), diaper and rocking
chair relay (first lap jockey un

Americans in Israel Have
Until Monday To Decide
On Israeli Citizenship
a
Tel Aviv (U.R) The 3,000 or
so American citizens residing in
Israel have to decide before July
14 between U. S. or Israel na
tionality. An American who does not re
nounce Israeli citizenship before
mid-July automatically becomes
an Israel national. United States
nationality laws do not permit
a person to be a national of
another state as well. Any
American not disclaiming Is
raeli citizenship before the dead
line date loses his American
citizenship.
On July 14, the Israeli nation
alitv law goes into effect. Al
though the State of Israel is al
ready four years old, there is no
Israel citizen until the middle of
July,
According to the new law,
every Jewish emmigrant to Is
rael automatically acquires Is
rael citizenship unless he prev
iously renounces the right.
Americans desiring to disclaim
Israeli citizenship will turn in
their applications at- one of 11
special offices throughout the
country. The minister of interior
then decides whether to recog
nize the opting out and attend
ant renunciation of Israel
nationality.
Americans Stand Fast
Despite the Tropes of the au
thorities here that few will take
advantage of the opting out
clause in the law, most Ameri
cans will disclaim Israeli citizenship.
American consular officials in
Israel are instructing U. S. na
tionals of Jewish descent to dis
claim Israeli nationality and
submit proof of their opting out.
Otherwise, American authori
ties here leave the full implica
tions of the new law up to local
practices. American residents of
Israel disclainyng Israel na
tionality still will be able to
serve in-the army here (proving
they take no oath of allegiance)
without losing their American
citizenship. Opting out forms
will be attached to all -immigrant
visas issued by Israeli con
sulates abroad.
A Jew renouncing Israeli na
tionality who later changes his
mind can not acquire automatic
citizenship again but must be
come naturalized.
July 14 was fixed as the dead
line becuse it marks the anni
versary of the death of Theo
dore, Herzl, founder of the idea
of modern Israel as a political
state.
It also will mark the second
anniversary of passage of the
Law of Return assuring every
Jew the right to enter Israel.
Not to Be Stateless
The nationality law and the
law of return are calculated to
eliminate the possibility of Jews
being stateless.
The chief contention in the
parliamentary debate on the na
tionality law . was the question
of citizenship for non-Jewish
Israeli residents.
Israel's 175,000 non-Jews are
greatly concerned with that as
pect of the law.
A non-Jew who was a citizen
of Palestine until the day the
State of Israel was proclaimed
May 14, 1948 becomes an Is
rael citizen if he fulfills three
conditions. He must have been
registered as a resident of the
country by March 1, 1951. He
also must be a resident of the
country on July 14 of this year
and he must prove that he has
been living in Israeli territory
since the establishment of the
state.
If he was not in the country
at any time between May 14,
1948 and July 14, 1952, he has
to show that he entered Israel
legally
The overwhelming majority
of non-Jews that is Arabs
now living in Israel were Pales
tinian citizens. Almost all Israel
Arabs. 168,000, can fulfill the
conditions of registration
residence.

nd Budget Vote
Due at Gold Hill
Gold Hill The second city
budget election to approve $14,
085 over the 6 per cent increase
limitation will be held at the
Goffl Hill city hall July 18, from
1 to 7 p.m., according to the
posted election notice.
The budget was previously
passed by the city's voters, but
due to a legal technicality was
declared invalid. ,
The general fund total is
$26,985, with $12,900 in expect
ed receipts, leaving $14,085 to
be raised by taxation for the
fund. This figure, plus bond and
interest retirement amounting
to $4,000, adds up to $18,085, the
total amount to be raised by tax
ation for 1952-53.
The reason for a levy over the
constitutional limitations is that
that the city has no tax base
established for its general mu
nicipal purposes.
A public hearing on the bud
get will be held Thursday, July
17, at 8 p.m., in the city hall.
Lattie Frost and Laura
Dungey will be election judges,
while Pearl Ferguson and Fan
nie Kies will be the clerks.
