That has disrupted the sleep
ing habits of the athletes who
have gathered here from all
over the world for the Olympic
games opening July 19.
Rest Difficult
Most of them are used to
sleeping in darkness and are
finding it diffficult to get their
proper rest.
Some of them even have gone
so far as to start working out
as early as 4 a. m. Three U .S.
athletes pole vault favorite
Bob Richards, javelin thrower
Bud Held and walker Henry
Laskau along with members of
the Pakistan and Venezuelan
teams were in that "early
bird" contingent.
The athletes also had the
gracious hospitality of the Finns
with which to contend.
There was such a wide va
riety of delicacies available at
the .Olympic village that Coach
Brutus Hamilton of the U S.
track and. field team had to
warn the athletes against over
eating as well as under-sleeping.
Heat Problem
The heat presented a problem
to the athletes from many coun
tries accustomed to cooler
weather. Helsinki has experi
enced its hottest weather of the
year during the past two days
with the temperature in the up
per 70's and a continuation of
the "heat" wave forecast.
The vanguard of the German
Olympic team 30 rowers and
yatchtsmen called 'off their
first scheduled practice session
Thursday because it was too hot
for them.

Fish Bootlegging Plagues

The moonshine boys still make
whiskey in Florida's pine and
palm country but a bootlegging
problem which has been
plaguing authorities has nothing
to do with swampland joy juice.
Every now and then investiga
tors halt an automobile headed
for the Georgia border. They
pull back a canvas cover and
there is the illicit cargo, fresh
water game fish taken illegally
from Florida fakes.
The bootlegging of fish is an
ever present problem and a con
stant headache to investigators
for the Florida Game and Fresh
Water Fish Commission.
"We have to fight.it all the
time," said Commissioner Miller
V. Joiner. "We try to catch them
at the source. We throw up road
blocks and send out undercover
agents. Still they keep coming.
800 Pounds Seized
One recent case, for example,
involved some 800 pounds of
bream and speckled perch and
resulted in the arrest of a young
Floridan who was driving the.
car. Officers ended a wild chase
by shooting dwn . the automo
bile tires.
Bootleggers pack the fish in
ice and use. canva& covering to
escape detection. Along the
route- they periodically drain off
the melted ice with a hose.
Most loads bring between $300
and $400 from black market

First bootleggers must catch
the fish, but that is usually a
fairly speedy process, since they
use seines instead of hooks. Then
there's nothing left to do . but
load the catch -in a converted
automobile and head for the
Georgia line. If they evade wild
life officers, all is well.
Sportsmen Suffer '
As in the case of the young
Floridan with 800 pounds of
game fish, however, they are
sometimes caught and hauled off
to the nearest jail.
Other than the detected of
fender, sportsmen suffer most
from the bootlegging. This black
market in game fish threatens to
throw Florida lakes out of bal
ance as far as their fish popula
tion is concerned.
"However," Joiner said, "the
bootlegging element among fresh
water commercial fishermen
seems determined to continue vi
olating the law."
The one bright spot seems to
be in - disposition of the confis
cated fish. They are distributed
to Jacksonville institutions
which care for. the underprivil
eged such as St. Mary's Home for
Girls and the Hope Haven Hos
pital for crippled children.
