Hardtop Car Races Slated Friday
At Sheriff's Posse Grounds Here
Hardtop auto racing makes its
bow in Medford on Friday. The
races will be staged at the Jack
son County Sheriff's posse
grounds.
Trials are set for 7 p.m. with
the first race planned for 7:45
p.m. A number of heats, a trophy
dash, a semi-main and main are
on the probable program.
A sizable field of cars and
drivers who have been compet
ing on the Yreka, Calif., track
for some time will be entered
in the event here. Drivers will
include two from Grants Pass,
Dick Mills and Bernie Miller.
Racers Listed

er, who took a heat race and
main event last Saturday at
Yreka; Woody Thomason, Cork
Dick, Orville and Frank John
son, Rusty and Don Phillips,
Morrie Wood, Darrell Robinson,

Barlow, Chick Robinson, Fred
Arnberg, Joe Shelton, Lyle Hop

Units Sought
Portland A call for units
wishing to participate in the
pageant for the fifth annual
Shriners' hospital football game
has been issued by Chet Duncan,
director..
Another of the spectacular
pre-game pageants and halftime
ceremonies which have become
one of the highlights of the tra
ditional gridiron encounter will
accompany this year's game, to
be played here at Multnomah
stadium Saturday night, August
23.
Last year more than 40 uni
formed units and more than
1,000 people performed in the
pageant, and Duncan expects as
many to take part for the fifth
game in the series.
Bands, marching units, drum
and bugle corps and drill
teams are invited to participate.
Any group wishing to take part
should write to Duncan at
Shrine game headquarters in the
Jackson Tower building.
Reserved seat tickets for the
tiff are also available through
Shrine game headquarters.

Portland (U.R) The veterans
continued to set the pace in the
54th annual Oregon state ten
nis tournament Thursday, but
Wednesday's heat gave a couple
of the favorites real scares.
Emery Neale, defending cham
pion and six times king of the
state's racquetmen, fought from
behind to overcome Jack Neer
5-7, 6-3, 6-1.
Third seeded Jim Brink also
dropped a set before he over
came University of Oregon's
Bill Rose, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
The victories put Neale and
Brink 'into the quarter finals
along with top-seeded Jerry De-
Witt of San Francisco and
fourth-seeded Linn Rockwood
of Salt Lake City.

attraction is scheduled here on
Friday.
The Central Point nine of the
Medford Softball association
will play a non-loop encounter
with the strong Grants Pass
Elks. Time of the conflict will
be 8:15 p.m. It . will be played
on the lighted high school field
at Fourth and Bush streets.
Central Point will be out to
even the score for a previous set
back. The Elks won an earlier
fracas by the low margin of 1
to 0. Harry Tonn, Lee Frink and
Vern Collins are expected to
divide pitching duties for the
Central Pointers.

Studs Eye
Big Series
With Drain
Medford's Cheney Studs will
make an all-out effort Saturday
night and Sunday when they
in 1 Southwestern Oregon league
in a Southwestern Oregon league
baseball series at Drain.
Tied with Coos Bay-North
Bend in second place with seven
wins and five losses, the Studs
are now three games behind the
front running Black' Sox, who
have a 10 and 2 record. Med
ford by sweeping the series can
climb to within one game of
the Sox.
Then they'll hope that some
other team can help by spilling
Drain, too.
Drain presents a potent line
up with such ex-Coast leaguers
as Roy Helser and Harvey
Storey. The Sox with all their
power topped Medford twice in
the opening series of the season.
However, the Studs feel that
chances are good for victory this
time. Their hope stems irom a
pair of recent victories over
Coos Bay which swept a series
from Drain.
Davids Coming
While Medford won't see
league action at home until July
27 against Coquille, a couple of
games with traveling teams will
be played at the fairgrounds
will be contested to fill the gap
The Studs play the House of
David on Tuesday, July 15, and
the Havana Cubans, a colored
nine, on Friday, July 18.

the nation, in Mexico, in all
Canadian provinces, in the Ha

year is averaged by the bewhis
kered baseballers and their win
ning average over a 30-year
period is .738.
League Softball
Hassles Tonight
Two softball games are sched
uled at the senior high field
here ' tonight and two " will be
played on Friday.
The first girls' league scuffle
in about two weeks is set for
this evening. Central Point and
Eagle Point will vie at 7:30 p.m
A men's loop joust will follow
with the Crater Lions tussling
Eagle Point.
On Friday the 7:30 p.m. clash
will match two girls' clubs, the
Crater Babes and Central Point.
The Babes are unbeaten in two
tilts in the circuit and Central
Point has one win and no losses.
The nightcap Friday will be a
men's league scrape with Mobil
gas and YMCA contending.

It's calm and peaceful up here
and it makes you wish you
could take some of it along for
the Olympic Games in Finland
Usually, the Olympics can use
a bit of serenity. And when the
lads get to bouncing the ball up
against the iron wall which runs
along the border between Fin
land and Russia there isn't like
ly to be an exception.
For an event which was aim
ed . at promoting international
amity, the Olympics have pro
duced more antagonistic action
that a Killarney fair with some
of the best contests ignored in
the record books. Enmity in
stead of amity too often has been
the winner.
Frenchman Starter
Baron Pierre de Coubertin,
an idealistic Frenchman, started
this business which today is tak
ing athletes from all over the
world on an odyssey to Scand
inavia. The good baron set the
wheels in action at Athens in
1896 and fractured feelings have
been splinted hastily ever since.
The first real rhubarb, as

only incident occurred when
the French team was kept out
by a gateman and the Finns
avoided trouble at the portals
by simply scaling the wall.

At Portland
Portland Not only will the
Los Angeles Rams, world's pro
fessional football champions,
present a coterie of gridiron
stars when they appear here at
Multnomah stadium August 30,
but their opponents, the Chi
cago Cardinals, also will put
some of the sport's greats on the
field.
The Chicago team will go
forth under a new coach, Joe
Kuharich, who led San Fran
cisco to national recognition last
year. His AU-American,ace, Ol
lie Matson, may make his pro
football debut in the game after
he returns from the Olympic
Games.
Heading the list of the Chi
cago notables is Charley Trippi,
the Georgia ail-American. Trip
pi, moved to quarterback last
year, fared as well at that posi
tion as he did at halfback in
previous seasons. Although he
guided the club as T-formation
quarterback, he was still the
Cards' leading ground gainer.
Frank Tripucka, anotherlquar-
terback ace, is one of several
Notre Dame stars playing with
the Cardinals. Others are Emil
"Six-Yard" Sitko, halfback; Jer
ry Groom, center; and Bill
Fischer, guard. All were all
Americans at Notre Dame.
Open at San Francisco
Then the Chicagoans also
boast of such performers as
Tommy Karras, hero of the Illi
nois victory in the Rose Bowl
last January; Cliff Anderson, In
diana end who set new pass re
ceiving records in the Big Ten;
Fran Polsfoot, Washington State
end who was one of the best in
the National Football league last
year; and Harold Lutz, Alabama
end and star place kicker.
The Chicago team will open
its non-chmpionship schedule in
San Francisco against the Forty-
Niners a week prior to the local
engagement. The Cardinals will
arrived in Portland a week ahead
of the game and will practice
daily here before the public.

Oregon Sports Attractions, re
ports that mail orders are ac
counting for sizable blocks of
tickets each day. He has urged
fans to secure reservations by
sending check or money order to
Oregon Sports Attractions in the

Title Races
On Sunday
Portland Motorcycle racing
experts are now predicting a
new track record in the $2500
25-Mile Pacific coast champion
ship faces to be held at Portland
Meadows Sunday, July 13.
The racing strip at The Rose
City oval is hard packed by
many weeks of thoroughbred
racing and with it's wide banked
turns it is ready made for the
blazing speeds developed in 'cy
cle racing.
Tom Boden, represenative and
referee for the American Motor
cycle association inspected the
track Saturday and pronounced
it to be in perfect condition for
racing.
"With a little scraping and
watering it will be lightning fast
and I would not be surprised to
see a new national record set
here next Sunday," said the rac
ing official.
Harder, Faster
The track will be harder and
faster than it was in 1950 when
Larry Hedricks narrowly missed
setting a new record when he
won the Pacific coast title for
that year.
Another factor favorable to the
setting of a new speed mark
is that this year's races are at
tracting more of the nations lead
ing riders than ever before.
Better than 150 of the nation's
outstanding motorbike riders
from all parts of the country
are expected to be on hand.
Time trials for the races have
been set for 9 a.m. with the
races proper scheduled to get un
der way at 1:30 p.m.

Salmon Running
At Rogue Mouth
Salmon were "really run
ning" at the start of this week
at the mouth of Rogue River.
That was the report of Mr.
and Mrs. Bill Barnes, Med
ford. who fished there on Mon
day. They said that all boats fish
ing in the "jaws" that day got
their limits. About 20 boats
were at the mouth. The river
was thick with fish, Mrs.
Barnes stated.
The couple and a number of
other upper Rogue residents
ware at the mouth for holiday
boat races and carried off a
good share of honors. They
said that the regatta was a
memorial event, honoring
Vance Scott, Gold Beach re
sort owner killed in a plane
crash last year. Proceeds went
toward a boat and other life
saving equipment to be used
at the river mouth.
