Has Trouble Entering Hall

pro - Eisenhower . Republicans
from Georgia finally won their
fight for seats at the national
convention, they were held up
at the entrance of Convention
hall because they didn't have
badges or credentials.
The newly - accredited dele
gates finally argued their way
through the entrance. One of
the group was asked how he got
by the well - disciplined guards.
He quipped: "It was easy. We
know a Southern Democrat who
has influence."

Salem (U.R) State police
searched Thursday for two Ore
gon state prison inmates who
walked away from a cherry
picking gang west of Lincoln in
Polk county Wednesday.
They wrre identified as Larry
Powell, 13, and Joseph Baker,
19. Powell was received at the
prison Nov. 12, 1951. from Uma
tilla county to serve three years
on a larceny charge. Baker was
received April 6, 1951 from
Lane county to serve three
years for burglary not in a
dwelling.

Man, Woman Arraigned
On Contributing Charge
Mrs. Rosie Leland Peebler,
30, and Arthur Emil Hanson,
35, both of Rogue River, were
arraigned in district court Tues
day on a charge of contribut
ing to the delinquency of a
minor, according to District At
torney Paul Haviland.
District Judge Rawles Moore
allowed them time to obtain
counsel before setting the pre
liminary hearing. Judge Moore
set. a $2,500 bond on both Han
son and Mrs. Peebler.

VFW Presents Award
To Portland Editor

31st annual Oregon encamp
ment here Wednesday with the
award of a national VFW' cita
tion ' to Robert C. Notson, man
aging editor of The Oregonian.
Notson was honored for his
service to veterans. The award
was presented by William J.
Ashworth, Oregon department
commander. -
Ex-Salem Police Chief
Dies After Long Illness
Salem (U.R) A former police
chief here for many years,
Frank Minto, 73, died at his
home Wednesday after a long
illness. s
He served for 27 years on the
police force and was its chief
26 years. ,
He is survived by his widow
and one son, Harry R. Minto of
Salem.

Seaman Patrick McMiUan, 36,
embraces his sister, Mrs. Walter
Argubright, upon meeting her for
the first time. McMillan ran away
from home at the age of 13 before
his sister was born. He was in
Minneapolis searching for her and
a newspaper story led to their

The movie queens and pro
files wh oueed to scream at the
scripts were patted on the head
and given a choice of others. But
in these television times, the
studios just suspend any com
plainers and economize by yank
ing them temporarily off the
payroll.

worth, Dean Martin, Jerry Lew
is, Fernando Lamas, Betty Gra
ble, Tyrone Power, Ava Gardner
and Tony Curtis are either on
suspension or just got off at
their studios.
New Richard Widmark is the
latest contract star to be minus
his paycheck.
"I turned down a weak part
in The Number," he explained.
"It just wasn't for me. I don't
blame the studio for wanting to
keep me working. But if it's a
role that would hurt me, then I
have, to look out for myself."
These days a bum role can
slow down an actor, he went on.
'T just didn't want to take the
risk," the jobless actor said.
"Not at this stage of the game.
I've been in Hollywood at 20th
Century-Fox studio for five
years. It's not so bad to take so-

happy with the plots.

just a matter of business. They're
not so lenient any more."
Tony Curtis was suspended be
cause he tripped off on an un
authorized trip with wife Janet
Leigh. Furthermore, the studio
added sternly, he once ran up
an astronomical phone bill call
ing her from New York, and then
added this fat item to his ex
pense account.
Betty Grable played the horses
during her year-long suspension.
Martin and Lewis lolled in
Palm Springs'. Widmark said he
guessed he'd stay home and paint
the barn.
