Concert Tonight
the summer session band con
cert will be given at 8 p.m. to
day in the old city park, accord
ing to L A. Mirick, director of
instrumental music for the pub
lic schools.
This final Medford concert of
the summer session bands will
include 10 numbers. The band
will travel to Ashland Thurs
day night to join the Ashland
city band in a combined band
concert in the Lithia park band
shell.
The band performing tonight
numbers some 50 players. They
include college students, busin
essmen and senior high school
students.
The band's program is "His
Honor," ."Grand Festival Over
ture," "National Emblem
March," "Night BeSt," "Synco
pated Clock," 'One World,"
"Little Suite for Band," "The
Phantom Regiment," and "The
Victor March."
Randy Hugdahl will perform
a trombone solo, "The Lost
Chord." A cornet trio composed
of Keith Mirick, Walter Kendall
and Blake Maddox will play
" Majesty of the Colors.
4-H Club News
Howard Club
The Howard 4-H Sewing club
held a short meeting July 1
with the vice-president acting
as president. Nancy Barnes dem
onstrated shrinking material.
Nadine Brood will demonstrate
laying a pattern on material
at the next meeting, July 15,
at the home of our leader, Mrs.
Toley.
After the meeting the club
members went for a swim at
Hawthorne park. Refreshments
were served at the park.

lican National Convention is
really an "Old Guard" outfit.

Salem (U.R) Second quarter
distribution of state highway
fund money to Oregon's 36
counties is underway this week,
Secretary of State Earl T. New
bry said Wednesday.
More than $2,000,000 will be
divided in the counties based on
number of motor vehicles regis
tered in 1951.
The state highway fund draws
its revenues from vehicle and
operators xegistrations, motor
vehicle licenses.
Total apportionment made out
of this fund is $2,001,749.60 and
covers the quarter April 1 to
June '30. It represents 19 per
cent of the total highway fund
for. the second quarter, $10,5? 5,
524.23, a slight drop from the
first quarter total of $10,706,-253.33.
This week's apportionment by
counties include:
Jackson, $87,704.96; Joseph
ine, $4U,603.oa; luamatn, $ou,-315.59.

in white letters with "TAFT," to
ward off the glare of the tele
vision lights. Eenhower parti
sians promptly countered with
wide-brimmed straw boaters,
with "IKE" lettered on the flat
tops.
Former President Herbert
Hoover got a warm reception
from the RepuBlican Convention
delegates. A thermometen in the
press box showed that the tem
perature rose from 25 to 80 de
grees during the 13-minute dem
onstration for Mr.. Hoover.
Air-Ground Radio
Test Successful
A test in air-ground commu
nication with a "handy talkie"
radio set used in the airplane,
proved " highly successful over
southern Oregon Tuesday, L. L.
Simpson, secretary-manager of
the Southern Oregon Conserva
tion and Tree Farm association,
reported today.
Simpson said the flight was
made to test the possibility of
communication from the air
with the main transmitter in
Medford and with ground crews
in spotting forest fires. The air-
ground communication "worked
beautifully," Simpson' declared.
Dick Alley of Alley Lumber
company . flew with the one
fourth watt unit on the seat be
side him. The flight took him
over Canyonville, Tiller, the
head of Elk creekand Woodruff
meadows and along the Cascade
mountains.
Alley, according to Simpson,
was never out of reach of the
master station or a mobile unit.
Phoenix City Councilman Resigns;
Mayor Not Seeking Reelection
Phoenix Councilman Cecil
Norris resigned at this week's
council meetings, according to
Mayor E. R. Claflin.
His resignation was submitted
"for the benefit of the commun
ity and himself," Mayor Claflin
explained. "The rest of the coun
cil and myself regret tMis move
as we have sure enjoyed work
ing with him," Mayor Claflin
noted. He added further that
Norris had "given the council
a boost with his youthful ap
proach .to Phoenix's problems
and had worked for the better
ment of the city." Norris' term
would have expired this fall.
The resigning councilman had
been the leader in backing the
proposed city budget which was
defeated by voters the first time
but passed later following a pub
lic hearing in which the princi
pa objections were heard and
compromised on. He had also
argued in favor of a business
tax for Phoenix at an' earlier
hearing.
Mayor Not Candidate
At the same time, Mayor Claf
lin stated that "I will not be a
candidate for reelection next
fall." He added he would con
tinue working for the better
ment of Phoenix until his term
is over. He pointed to the city
ordinance for anyone wishing
to file for the position which
puts the date for filing cand
idacy not more than 90 nor less
than 30 days prior to the gen
eral election, November 4."
No person has been appointed
yet to fill the vacancy left by
Norris, the mayor stated, but an
appointment will be forthcom
ing in the near future. Applica
tions for the vacancy left by the
July 1 resignation of Police
Chief Curt Fisher are now be
ing accepted by the council, he
continued, with a special meet
ing to be held later in the month
to select a new chief from the

On Tolman Creek road
Ashland An unoccupied
house and garage on Tolman
Creek road was destroyed by
fire early Tuesday, according
to the fire department.
W. R. Dale, owner of the pro
perty, said he had no immediate
estimate of the loss. He is par
tially covered by insurance. The
fire is believed to have started
in Dale's car, which was in the
garage.
The fire department concen
trated on saving the Dale resi
dence next to the burning build
ing. The house that was destroy
ed was used by Dale as a guest
house.
Ashland Mayor Seeks
Reelection to Office
Ashland Mayor Phil H.
Stansbury announced Tuesday
that he would seek reelection in
the November election, but two
Ashland councilmen said they
do not plan to run again.
Councilmen Fred Taylor and
Fred Holmes, whose terms ex
pire this year, both said they
will not seek reelection. The
term of Councilman Dr. W. W.
Weller also expires in Novem
ber, but he. was not available
for comment.
Stansbury is completing his
first full term as mayor of Ash
land. He did, however, serve
out an unexpired term in ofice
prior to his official election in
1950.

Footlighfer Tryouls
To Continue tonight
Tryouts for the Footlighter's
melodrama, "Only an Orphan
Girl" will continue tonight at
the group's little theater at the
fairgrounds, beginning at 7:30
according to Ruth Kilbourn, di
rector of the summer show.
The "Gay Ninety" thriller
will be enhanced with between
scenes oleo acts of comic and
nostalgic character, she said.
Spots fdr musicians, dancers
and specialty act directors will
be needed as well as actors Miss
Kilbourn declared. She urges all
interested to turn out and help
with the production.

Butte Falls Men
Given Sentences
Two Butte Falls men were
sentenced this morning in dis
trict court to six months in the
county jail for disorderly con
duct, according to District At
torney Paul Haviland.
The men, Ray Oden, 24, box
65, Butte Falls, and Benny Neal,
20, Butte Falls, . were charged
with disorderly conduct on July
5 at the Midway Service station
on the Butte Falls highway.
James Junior Crowell,-Sudan,
Texas, was arraigned Tuesday
in circuit court and' pleaded
guilty to a charge of burglary
not in a dwelling in two places.
He admitted taking a rifle and
ammunition from John Freden
burg's cabin on Carhrry creek,
July 4, and $2.67 in cash and
some cigarettes from Melvin
Boatwright's place on July 7,
also on Carberry creek.
The case will be continued for
sentencing pending receipt of
complete records, according to
the district attorney's office.

Mrs. Hughes.
She has been a member of the
Grand Old Party since her fa
ther "put me on a dry goods
box in front of a store in De
catur, 111., and told me to yell,
"Hurrah for Harrison.'"
Fire Destroys Car
South of Medford
A car driven by a Seattle
salesman caught fire and was de
stroyed last night near the Star-
lite Drive-in theater on the
South Pacific highway, accord
ing to the state forest patrol.
The salesman, R. G. W. And
erson, was fixing a flat tire
when he smelled gasoline and
the car burst into flame, the
forest patrol report said. The
car was a total loss, according
to the fireman.
All Anderson saved were his
clothes and suitcases and sample
kits. He had placed the cases
behind the car to hold safety
lights.
