Leaves -Thursday
On Ulouth Tour
Gold Hill Harold "Pat" Fo
ley, junior student of Crater
high school, left Thursday on
the United States "Pilgrimage
for Youth," sponsored by Odd
Fellows and Rebekah lodges. He
is one of two students chosen for
the trip through an essay con
test sponsored by the Leaders
Council of Southern Oregon, in
cluding lodges in Jackson and
Josephine counties. The other
winner is Miss Patricia Abbot,
Ashland.
Accompanying the two as
chaperone is Mrs. E. D. Damer
on of Ashland. They left for
Spokane, Wash., from where
they will travel east through
Canada. They will join pilgrim
age members from other parts
of the country and make a tour
by chartered buses to Niagara
Falls, Gettysburg, Mount Ver
non and other places of scenic
and historic interest.
They will spend one week in
New York City, visiting United
Nations headquarters and mak
ing trips to Coney Island, the
Statue of Liberty and other
places of interest in and around
New York City.
Pat Foley is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Harry Foley of First
avenue. He was a runner-up in
the United Nations Pilgrimage
contest last year, when he was
a student at Gold Hill high
school.
Women Delegates
At GOP Convention
Attend Shows, Teas
Chicago (U.R) Women dele
gates and visitors to the Repub
lican Convention are being
treated to a round of festivities
ranging from style shows to a
' trip to the races.
Their hostesses are 700 111!
nois Republican women, who
are determined to see that the
out-of-state guests have a good
time.
The Illinois women hold open
house from 8 a.m. to midnight
every day In a two-floor Tower
suite at the Conrad Hilton
hotel.
About 10,000 people includ
ing "quite a few" men have
dropped in for programs, tea,
advice on where to go in Chi
cago or just to relax and watch
convention proceedings on the
seven big television sets.
The Illinois women also spon
sored three breakfast style
shows at leading department
stores and reserved six boxes
at the suburban Arlington track
for visitors who want to see the
races.
Free tickets to radio broad
casts and even free cigarets are
distributed at the Tower head
quarters.
Mrs. John K. Russell, Oak
Park, chief hostess, .said the
courtesy is strictly non-partisan
The hostesses don't take sides in
the scrap over candidates.
Member Transferred
To Amethyst Rebekahs;
Visit Central Point
Gold Hill Amethyst Rebekah
lodge, at a meeting Wednesday
night in Odd Fellows hall, wel
comed Mrs. Edna Gaby as a new
member by transfer from Tilla
mook Rebekah lodge. The newly
elected noble grand, Mrs. Cecil
Johnson, and the vice-grand
elect., Mrs. J. Les Graffis, gave
their ritualistic work to qualify
themselves for installation.
The members went to Central
Point afterward to visit the
lodge there. They were welconv
ed by the Central Point noble
grand, Mrs. Ernest Lowery
Gold Hill members making the
visit included noble grand May-
belle Rains and Mesdames
George Dorman, Lester Parker,
Wilmer Bailey, Daniel Stewart,
John Novak, J. Les Graffis, Wil
liam Fields, Kitty Rich, Nina
Dusenberry, Lester Thompson,
and Harry Newnham.
During the meeting in Gold
Hill, a letter from Mrs. Olive
Ramey of Hillsboro, president
of the Rebekah Assembly of
Oregon, was read, announcing
that she would make her offic
ial visit to Amethyst Rpbekah
lodge November 20, instead of
in August as originally planned.

Picnic Planned by
Medford Lady Lions
Medford Lady Lions will have
a picnic for members and their
husbands at 6:30 p.m., Friday
July 11, at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Kenneth Campbell, 520
Dakota Avenue.
Coffee, cream and rolls will
be furnished. Those attending
are asked to take a covered dish
and their table service.
Cancel Luncheon
Adarel Social club announces
that the covered dish luncheon
which was to have been held at
the home of Mrs. Frank Jan-
osky Thursday, July 10, has
been cancelled due to the illness
of Mr. Janosky.

Baptist Church Class
Postpones Meeting
SOS class, First Baptist
church, announces that the busi
ness and social meeting set for
July 11 has been postponed
until August.
Girl Scout News
At Camp
A total of 102 campers are at
Girl Scout camp, Low Echo,
Lake o' Woods, for the opening
week, it is reported from head
quarters. Excellent camping
weather is reported by the camp
staff.
.Next weeks camp fees are
"now due at the scout office, it
is stated. Last week only 15
campers delayed payment of
fees until after arrival at camp,
it was said, and the staff is hope
ful that 100 per cent pre-pay-
ment of fees can be reached this
week. Cooperation -by parents
on this point is much appreci
ated, according to headquarters.
A total eclipse of the sun will
occur June 30, 1954. Starting at
sunrise in the north-central Unit
ed States, it will end at sunset in
India. It will be unusual in that
its path of totality extends
across land more than water,
giving millions of people the
chance to observe it if their area
skies are clear.
