Swimming Program
Importance Told
With 6,539 drownings in the
U.S. last year; 176 over the
Fourth of July this season and
five in Oregon during the re
cent holiday, there is need for
added emphasis on the learn-to-swim
program, Don Day, Y.
M. C. A. swimming instructor,
and Ed Knapp, Hawthorne pool
supervisor, told members of the
Medford Rotary club Tuesday in
a water safety program at the
Hotel Jackson.
The two instructors demon
strated the old Shaffer and new
Neilson methods of artificial res
piration, with Rotary program
chairman Otto Ewaldson as the
subject. Day stressed the simple
safety rules which should be
followed in case of boat mishaps
and ensible precautions for those
swimming in southern Oregon's
cold rivers.
A series of pratical rules gov
erning swimmers in Hawthorne
pool, approved by the Medford
city council, were outlined by
Ed Knapp. Steps followed in
keeping the one-half million gal
lons of water in the city pool
clean and fresh were explained.
The pool . accommodates 400
swimmers at one time, and 700
people sought relief from Med
ford's hot weather Monday in
the 76 degree water at Haw
thorne park.

County's Top Dairy
Herds Are Listed
The. five top herds and indi'
vidual winners for the June
competition of the Jackson
County Dairy Herd Improve-
association were announced to
day.
Top owners and the records
of their herds are W. D. Mon
gold, 1,056 average pounds of
milk and 57.9 average pounds of
butterfat (23 cows); Vinson
Vaughan, 1,220 pounds milk and
48.5 pounds butterfat (29 cows):
L: E. and Claude Ullom, 1,035
pounds milk and 43.8 pounds
butterfat (29 cows); Dale and
Harriet Young, 1,010 pounds
milk and 42.5 pounds butterfat
(33 cows); and Chester Jensen,
850 pounds milk and 42.3 pounds
butterfat (18 cows).
Vaughan's cow, "Hulda," was
the top producer with 3,201
pounds of milk and 105.6 pounds
of butterfat. '
