, pitchers for the major league
All Star game at Shibt Park
Tuesday.
By UNITED PRESS
Baseball's annual All - Star
game may be a delightful ex-
travaganza to the fans but it's
still just an added, unwanted
chore to the players and man
agers. Just how the players and
pilots feel about the game was
demonstrated again Sunday
when no fewer than six of the
13 pitchers named to, the Am
erican and National league
squads saw action and thus will
come up for Tuesday's game
without proper rest.
The fans, however, could take
some solace in the fact that in
each deliberate case of snubbing
the All-Star game, justice tri
umphed over sin and the star
pitcher lost. Those tagged with
defeat were Sal Maglie of the
Giants, Robin Roberts of the
Phillies, Warren Spahn of the
Braves, Bobby Shantz of the
A's, Mike Garcia of the In
dians and Satchel Paige of the
Browns.
Phillies Win
Maglie was beaten by the
Phillies, 4 to 1, after the
Giants beat Roberts, 2 to 0;
Spahn was hammered by the
Dodgers, 8 to 2; Shantz retired
after four innings and lost to the
Yankees, 5 to 2, although the
A's rebounded to win the night
cap, 7 to 6; Garcia bowed to the
White Sox, 3 to 2, in 12 innings
when Minnie Minoso hit a home
run, and Paige, relieving Ned
Garver, suffered the defeat as
the Tigers beat the Browns, 8
to 6, for their second straight
under Fred Hutchinson. .
In other games Sunday the
Cubs beat the Reds, 5 to 1 and
2 to 0, the Cardinals downed the
Pirates, 6 to 5 and 6 to 4, and
the Senators defeated the Red
Sox, 5 to 2.
As a result, the All-Star in
terlude found the Yankees lead
ing the American league by
three games and the Dodgers
leading the National by four-and-a-half.
The White Sox, Indians,
Senators and Red Sox trailed
the .Yankees with only 3Vi
games separating all four while
the - Giants were within range
of the Dodgers. A year ago. the
White Soxs were AL leaders,
one game ahead of Boston and
two ahead of New York while
Brooklyn enjoyed an 8V2 game
spread over ttie Giants.
Stan Musial, of the Cards,
led the National league's hitters
with .333, nine point better than
TobyAtwell of Chicago. In the
AL.Terris Fain of the A's, led
with a .336 average with Billy
Goodman of the Red Sox one
point behind and Al Rosen of
Cleveland six points away,
Fine Pitching"
In the NL, the lightly re
garded Cubs were in fourth
place although IIV2 games be

fine pitching from such as Paul
Minner and Warren Hacker who
turned in a two-hitter and a

San Francisco U.R) It was a
tough fight, but the Oaks won.
In third place, five games be

The successful performances
gave Mel Ott's talented gang, a
one-game, lead over the co-second
place clubs, Hollywood and
San Diego, as the second half
of the Pacific Coast league sea

Noble Stands Out
Catcher Ray Noble was the
standout hero. He caught every
game, handled the Oak pitchers
with aplomb and did not allow
base thief Carlos Bernier to pil
fer a sack in any of the eight
games. Bernier leads the league
in that department with 41.
Noble, on option to Oakland
from the New York Giants, won
Saturday's game with a grand
slam homer and he won the
first contest Sunday by belting
a four-master with two on.
His blow paced a four-run
first inning that gave the Oaks
a 6-3 decision. In the nightcap,
Piper Davis, in the role of a
sixth-inning pinch hitter, dou
bled off the left field wall to bat
home two runs and hand the
Oaks a 3-2 decision.
The two-bagger was Davis'
third of the afternoon.

One-Hit Victory
For Yakima Nine
By UNITED PRESS
A triple play and a one hit
pitching performance took the
Western International league
spotlight Sunday.
The triple killing was reeled
off by the climbing Tri-City
Braves in their 2-1 second-game
victory over Wenatchee.
Three walks and a fielder's
choice had given Wenatchee a
run and left the bases full. Then
Ben Guerro looped a pop fly
bunt which was caught by Cat
cher Ben Robinette. He prompt
ly tagged Clayton Carr who
was racing in from third, then
pegged to second in time to catch
Frankie Dasso trying to get back
to the bag.
Twelve Fanned
George New struck out 12
Chiefs and issued only two walks
as the Braves walked off with
the opener, 8-0.
The best pitching feat was
turned in by Jack Thompson,
who hurled Yakima to a 2-0 first
game win over Salem. He allow
ed only one hit a first-frame
single to Connie Perez. Yakima
scored both its runs in the fifth
inning.
The up - and - coming Bears
plated six runs in the fifth in
ning of the windup to support
Kenny Wright's six - hit, pitch

Spokane Shoved
