Study of Pacific Ocean
To Effect American Lives

4,000,000-square-mile area of the
equatorial Pacific is being stud
ied by west coast marine scien
tists, whose findings will affect
many segments of American
life.
The area, which fans outward
from the Panama Canal, is al
most a total blank now on the
navigation and research charts.
Included are waters of the east
ern equatorial Pacific off Cen
tral America and northern South
America.
The sludies will embrace pro
jects ranging from the under
water speed of sound to observa
tions on the size of the tuna
population in the area. The find
ings will be of interest, at least
casually, to the housewife who
makes a tuna salad as well as to
shipwrecked mariners or airmen
whose use of small sound bombs
at time of disaster may save
their lives.
The exploration involves the
ships and scientists of the Naval
Electronics Laboratory at San
Diego; the Scripps Institution of
Oceonography; the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service and the Inter-
American Tropical Tuna Com
mission. The last named is a
group now supported by Costa
Rica and the university and is
concerned with the life, habits
and psychology of the far-ranging
and elusive tuna.
The Electronics Laboratory
ship, the EPCE (R) 857, has left
San Diego on the first leg of her
journey, which will be concen
trated along the shipping lanes
of the eastern equatorial Pacific.
Before returning here late this
summer, she will cover 10,000 or
more miles and will stop at
many Mexican ports.
The Scripps vessel, the Hori
zon, is scheduled to depart San
Diego about May 15, and will
concentrate on a study of the
equatorial ocean currents. The
Inter-American Tropical Tuna
Commission biologists will go
on the voyage, gathering data
about -the tuna population for
later relay to the skippers of the
large clippers that base at San
Diego and San Pedro.
. .The U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service's Pacific oceanic fisher
ies investigations plans to con
duct simultaneous cruises in the
ocean area to the west jof that
being studied by Scripps and the
NEL. .
Possibly of most interest to
the average American family,
which normally schedules tuna
in one form or another as a meal
during each year, is the program
of investigation into the life and
habits of this elusive marauder,
about which comparatively little
is known.
Earlier research has estab
lished that great schools of tuna
live, spawn and hunt in a 700
mile wide band extending north
ward from the Equator, and to
at least within 1,500 miles of the
Central American coast. In this
band there are many ocean cur
rents, which, where they meet,
boil upward, bringing food of
various types for the tuna.
Commercial fishermen are
anxious to know whether this
band of tuna extends eastward
to Central America. That infor
mation is of great potential com
mercial value, for it could well
mean that clippers could leave
port, load with bait rapidly and
then go directly to fishing
grounds where tuna . abound,
load and return to port without
loss of time.
Might Reduce Prices
Such a program would mean
lowered per unit costs of catch
ing fish, which, in turn, could
shave the ultimate cost of the tin
of tuna that the housewife buys
from the corner grocer.
In the Electronics Laboratory
experiments on the speed of
sound, small depth bombs will
be dropped at specific locations
to test and evaluate a search and
rescue network established by
the Navy. This system spans the
Pacific between stations at Kan
eohe, Oahu, Hawaii, and Points
Sur and Arena in California.
Long-distance transmission of
sound between refracting "lay
ers" of water is a basic principle
in the system, which scientists
hope some day may be used in
sea disasters to pin-point loca
tions of survivors. So far, the
longest sound transmission by
use of this system has been
3,500 miles.

weeks every baby should receive
every day not less than 300 or
400 units of
vitamin D .to

cod liver or
other fish liv
er oil contains
300 or 400 un
its of vitamin
D. A sinele

oil, such as conDol, viosteral,
contains 300 units of vitamin
D.
. Some babies get such a daily
ration of vitamin D for several
months or for the entire year.
But too often doctors and par
ents forget about it before the
baby has outgrown the need for
it. Not until about the eighteenth
month, when some babies begin
to get sufficient vitamin D from
egg yolk and butter (the only
foods that can supply enough for
a growing child), may the fish
liver oil, conDol or viosterol be
discontinued that is, if you
wish to give the. baby a fair
break. '
Some good doctors advise not
one teaspoonful of fish liver oil
but three daily; not a single J
drop of fish liver oil concentrate,
conDol or' viosterol, but three
drops daily that is, 900 or
1000 units of vitamin D daily.
It is hardly possible to learn in
one easy lesson how to diagnose
rickets, but the mention of some
common manifestations of this
calcium deficiency disease (vita
min D merely promotes assimil
ation and utilization of calcium)
will give a fair idea of the dis
ease. Incidentally, milk and egg
yolk are the best food sources
of calcium for infant or grow
ing child.
Familiar symptoms or signs of
rickets escape recognition in
many instances because parents
and sometimes doctors are prone
to dismiss them as "teething,"
"indigestion" or nervousness."
Rickets is not just a' bone dis
ease. The bone changes are sec
ondary. It is a nutritional defic
iency disease and affects the
whole body. The baby with rick
ets is tired, restless, unhappy,
fretful by day, by night sleep
ing badly, turning, twisting,
throwing off bed covers. He
impatiently rolls his sweating
head . on his pillow, perhaps
wearing away his hair. His bow
els are constipated except for
sudden attacks of diarrhea. His
abdomen is distended because
muscle coat of alimentary tract
is flabby, lacks tone, as are the
muscle and ligaments of the
whole body, so that the limbs
may be twisted into bizarre pos
itions. It is especially unfortunate for
the, baby with early rickets that
susceptibility to the cri (com
mon respiratory infections) is
characteristic of the disease. This
encourages (blankety) parents
and (blank) doctors and (censor
ed) saireygamps and (shall we
say just) quaint people to deny
the baby his place in the sun
or the chance to play most, of
the time dressed only in didies.
Sunlight or just diffuse daylight
(in the shade), if permitted to
reach the skin, manufactures the
vitamin D the baby needs.
Suffice merely " to mention
here the more frequent bone
changes of rickets: Late closure
of fontanelle (soft spot on top of
head remains soft it should
feel as hard as the rest of the
skull by the 18th month). Bead
ing of the ribs. Large square-
shaped head, prominent fore
head, Pigeon breast. Harrison's
groove constriction around
upper chest at armpit level with
outf laring ribs below to conform
with the pot-belly. Spinal cur
vature. Enlarged wrists. Knock-
knees or bow - legs. Retarded
growth of long bones. Flatfoot.
Altho the daily vitamin D
supplement may be discontinued
