Census Review Shows More Women Than Men
In Medford; Other Popu
Features Told
Men. If you're looking for
tnat supposed statistical para
dise where the women outnum
ber the men, you've found it
It's Medford.
Medford is one of five Oregon
metropolitan areas where there
are more women than men.
That's the report of the recently
published pamphlet, "General
Characteristics of O r e g o n,"
which compiles data on Oregon
shown in the 1950 United States
census of population.
541 Mot Women
According to the latest cen
sus there are 541 more females
than there are males in Medford
8,923 females, 8,382 males. At
the age of 15 the women gain
the numerical supremacy and
they maintain it consistently.
Medford boys and boy babies
outnumber the girls and girl
babies. But girls in the 15 to 19
age group take the lead and
(with one exception) they out
number the men in every age
group up to and including 85
years and over.
At 15 through 19 years of age
there are 153 more Medford
girls than boys. By the time the
85-and-o v e r classification is
reached the numerical superior
ity still remains, although it has
dwindled to 14. The census fig
ures for 1950 showed 53 Med
ford women who were at least
85. Only 39 men had lived past
that age.
The only point between adol
escence and old age where there
are more males than females
comes in the 45 to 49 age group.
In 1950 573 men fell in this
group as against only 548
women.
Mora Batchelori
Although there are more wom
en in the city than men, there
are more unmarried men than
there are unmarried women.
There also are more married
men than there are married
women, by the slight margin of
eight. The population difference
Is accounted for by the large
number of women who were
widowed or divorced. The total
number of women who have lost
husbands through 'death or the
courts was nearly three times
the number of men who lost
wives these ways.
Eugene, Salem, Portland and
Pendleton are the other Oregon
metropolitan centers registering
more female than male citizens.
Thus the state's four largest
metropolitan areas Medford,
Portland, Salem and Eugene
fall in this classification.
Figures Show Growth
The census figures effectively
show Medford's growth since
1940. The current census lists
the population as 17,305; this is
a 10-year increase of 6,024 per
sons. There are at least 1,000
Medfordites in each five-year
division to the age of 50, the
records show. The 1940 census
listed 1,008 Medford people in
the 25-29 age group, but in no
other division were there as
many as 1,000 people.
Over 2,000 Medford citizens
came either from another coun
ty or another country during
the year immediately preceding
the 1950 census.
Nearly half the city's foreign
born population of 558 came
here from the British Common
wealth. One hundred eighty-seen
were born in Canada (16 of
them in the French section), 70
in England and Wales and 17 in
Scotland.
From Scandinavia
. More than a hundred were
born in the Scandinavian coun
tries; 46 in Sweden, 41 in Nor
way and 22 in Denmark. Other
Florence Chadwick Fails
In Channel Swim Attempt
San Pedro, Calif. (U.R)
Channel swimmer Florence
Chadwick, still exhausted from
her vain attempt to conquer the
Catalina Island Channel, shook
her fist at the treacherous, 21
mile stretch of sea Saturday and
vowed to battle it again, prob
ably in September.
"I definitely will make an
other attempt," said the 32-year-old
San Diego, Calif., stenogra
pher only a few hours after she
was pulled, numb and cold,
from the channel Friday after
fighting the currents for 15
hours and 51 minutes and 16
seconds.
No Dale Set
Miss Chadwick, only woman
to swim the English Channel
from both direction, said it was
"too early" to set a definite date
for her second attempt to master
the choppy Catalina Channel,
but she indicated it probably
would be during the Labor Day
holiday.
Her muscles .surrendered to
the strain when she was only a
mile from her goal. Cabrillo
Beach on the mainland. She
plunged into the ocean at the
isthmus of Catalina Island short
ly before 9 p.m. Thursday night.
Miss Chadwick is a former
resident of Medford and the
Rogue valley. She was employed
as a stenographer here for
Harvey and Watkins, contrac
tors, during the construction of
Camp White. She kept in train
ing here by swimming in the
Rogue river.
FAILS IN CHANNEL TRY Florence Chadwick, famed
channel swimmer who formerly lived in the Rogue valley, is
shown above before attempting the 21-mile swim from Catalina
island to San Pedro's Cabrillo beach. After battling the tricky
channel currents for more than 15 hours, Miss Chadwick was
forced to give up her attempt to become the first woman to make
the swim. (International).
foreign states that have contrib
uted generously to the Medford
population include Germany,
65, the Irish Free state, 17, and
Russia, 12.
Only 87 of Medford's foreign-
born population over 21 years
of age are aliens. The great ma
jority, 427, have been natural
ized. The average MedforS family
man earns a yearly salary of
$3,720, according to the census
figures. The largest number of
families fall in the $3,500-4,000
wage group. Only 175 of Med
ford's listed 4,835 families have
an annual income exceeding
$10,000. Somehow, 225 families
manage to survive on an annual
income less than $500, the fig
ures show.
Most In Industry
The bulk of the Medford
working population is employed
in industry; there are 4,670
Medford men and 1,935 women
in what is termed "industry."
Seven hundred twelve of the
1,063 people in manufacturing
are employed processing furni
ture, lumber and other wood
products.
Eighty-seven per cent of the
Medford five to 17-year-old
population attends school, the
survey shows. There are only 50
Medford adults 25 males and
25 females who have not at
tended school at least one year.
At the other end of the scale
there were in 1950 420 wom
en and 410 men who had attend
ed colleges or universities for
at least four years.
More adult Medford women
than men have completed high
school. Figures for people over
21 years old indicated that 1,910
women had halted their formal
education after four years of
high school. The men who went
that far and stopped totaled
1,250. The medium number of
school years completed by Med
ford women is 12.1 (barely past
the high school graduate level).
The medium for Medford men is
11.9 years.
Countv Trends Similar
Population statistics for Jack
son county showed trends simi
lar to those in Medford with
one major exception. County
wide population figures show
that the men have the numeri
cal supremacy. There were 29,
815 Jackson county males and
only 28,697 females.
During middle-age the sex
ratio remains about even. And
at the age of 75 and on the wom
en outnumber the men. But
there are so many boy babies
and little boys in the county
that the males are able to take
the population lead.
Jackson county's population
of 58,510 includes 33,466 rural
people, but only about one-quarter
or. the rural population is
foun 1 on farms. The census sur
vey lists only 9,951 farm dwell
ers in Jackson county.

Convention Tickets
Finally Passed Out
Chicago (U.R) Precious tick
ets to the Republican National
Convention were in the hands
of national committeemen and
committeewomen Saturday and
a party worker sighed, "it's a
real relief to get these things
off our hands."
Burly Pinkerton detectives had
guarded the tickets for two days
and stood by Friday night as
they were distributed to the na
tional committee members.
"A ticket to paradise would
be almost easier to come by,"
said Pennsylvania Committee
man G. Mason Owlett, who was
in charge of distributing the
tickets.
The tickets, which are in
greater demand than ever before
in GOP history, will be handed
over to convention delegates
from each state by the national
committee members.
Police Seek Father
Of Kidnapped Child
Camden, N. J. (U.R) A two-year-old
girl was snatched from
the rear of her home Saturday
by a man believed to be her fa
ther and driven off in an auto
mobile bearing North Carolina
license tags.
A state-wide police alarm was
dispatched for the girl, Candace
Wiles, and her father, Robert
Lee Wiles of Goldhill, N. C,
described as a professional base
ball player with a St. Paul,
Minn., team.
The girl was placed in the
custody of her mother, Marilyn,
last year by a Camden judge
after the parents had separated.
Police throughout the state were
ordered to search for the father
and arrest him on a contempt of
court charge.
Change fo Electricity
.Brings End to Idanha
Idanha, Ore. (U.R) The Ra-
melia Lumber Co. will close its
mill here about July 14 while
the plant switches from diesel to
electric power.
Idanha, the city whose first
ordinance was to declare a
family lives on an income of
$3,210. This is $510 less than
the medium yearly income for
Medford families. Yet there are
1,015 families in the county
who have a yearly income ex
ceeding $10,000. One hundred
seventy-five of them live in
Medford, so Medford has more
than a third of the county's
families in the $10,000-and-up
class.
Ten is the medium number of
years of school attended by
Jackson county men over 21.
The adult women have attend
ed an average of 11.4 years.
Four years of college is the
boast of 1,005 men and 880
women in the county. There
are 110 men and 25 women who
have not attended at least one
year of school.
